general problems of the 2009 Jeep Wrangler

20 problems related to wheel have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2020

The Jeep has less than 40. 000 is and is not used off road. About 55mph the front end gets a out of control wobble. You have to slow way down for it to stop. It has done a few times before. The last time it was 4/29/20. The track bar was replaced with oem part and still does it. It seems to be a problem with a lot of Wrangler Jeeps. I don't know if it is a design flaw. Doing some research it seems to be a problem with Jeeps. This Jeep it completely stock with the same tires it came with new.

2 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2016

My Jeep has the death wobble. I have had it in the shop twice to get it fixed and spent over $3,000 so far to fix the problem and it has not be resolved! new parts and new tires have not helped. Someone is going to get hurt or killed. It happens all the time.

3 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

Corroded tire valve stems, and split nuts.

4 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

I just purchased a 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited x that is entirely stock. Within one week and the second time on a highway I experience what has been named the "death wobble. " within seconds it will go from a shimmy to a violent shaking that forces you to slow down or come to a complete stop which can be very dangerous on a highway in the left lane doing 55mph! since it started it has occurred every time I take it on the highway. Apparently this is a common issue among Jeeps but Chrysler is ignoring this defect and stating it is not a safety hazard.

5 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited x, purchased new. A few years after purchase I began experiencing death wobble. a mechanic's diagnostic stated my track bar was bent and my bushings were worn and needed replacing as a result of all the violent side to side shaking. This was repaired at great expense out of pocket. This repair seemed effective for some time before the speed wobble started up again this past year. During one episode, the harsh shaking caused my left side blinkers and brake light to fail. No one should reasonably be expected to operate a vehicle when it has the potential to suddenly, unexpectedly, uncontrollably, violently, harshly, and dangerously start shaking, especially while in operation at highway speeds. I avoid driving on the highway anymore because I can't keep up with the flow of traffic before jarring shaking will start. Any driving is now increasingly dangerous to me, my passengers, and other nearby drivers. The uncontrollably violent shaking is difficult to control, frightening, and forces me to abruptly pull over, greatly increasing my chances of being severely injured or even killed in an accident. It is not right for Jeep owners to suffer this. This is a known issue for Jeep. They should be liable for and reimburse Jeep owners any and all costs associated with repairs, alternate transportation, injuries, deaths, distress, or any other conditions or complications arising from, related to, or otherwise resulting from death wobble. causes for this hazard vary, so diagnostics and repairs can be extremely lengthy and costly, not to mention repairs needed for other areas of the vehicle worn and damaged as a result of such aggressively unsafe shaking. This is not standard wear and tear, but a serious, dangerous and potentially deadly issue that should be addressed and corrected by NHTSA, the center for auto safety, lawyers, and courts.

6 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

I have a 2009 4 door rubicon. I am experiencing major rust on the body under the doors, and with oxidation on non steel parts such as the mirror hardware and tire valve stems. I experienced the oxidation from the very start of owning the vehicle. In general event some bolts on the inside of the vehicle have rust on them. Chrysler is not will to do anything about it.

7 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2013

Death wobble, uncontrollable violent shaking between 30 & 50 mph. Serious safety issue at highway speeds being unable to control the vehicle's steering out of harms way. I have had it to two different dealerships three different times and I'm told that there is nothing wrong with it. It's obvious that there is a problem and I'm not the only one with this issue. A quick internet search on Jeep death wobble will confirm this. Chrysler needs to be held accountable and fix this problem before someone gets killed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

8 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

After driving a short distance and parking, I returned to find one tire flat. I changed the tire and returned home. The following morning I checked the damaged tire and found the valve stem missing. I drove to a service center and had the tire removed. The stem (with speed sensor attached) was loose inside the tire. We checked the remaining three wheels and found all wheels had badly corroded stem nuts, and that one of the nuts was cracked into three pieces. Removing all stem nuts damaged the sensors and all had to be replaced. The "new" parts are all of the same materials as the original items, thus I will have to replace the sensors, stems, and stem nuts every 2-3 years unless a fix is initiated.

9 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2013

I was driving home at 60-65mph from baltimore with my cousin, fiancé and aunt when I hit a minor pothole. The entire steering wheel/front section starts to violently shake and I was unable to stop it until I stepped on the breaks and slowed the car down to almost 25 mph on the highway and almost drove off to the side of the road. This happened 4 other times following that incident in a matter of 2 weeks’ time. Finally I called the dealership where I purchased the car. They told me it was the steering dampener and that I would have to replace it. They also told me that I had to pay for the part, even though I had purchased an extended warranty from them. I was told that this was very common on Jeeps and although there have not been any reported deaths, I am positive this will one day lead to an accident and /or death. This is a very serious defect on Jeep’s part and they need to address the issue before they kill someone. By the way, my car only has 37k miles on it. Still fairly new!.

10 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that all five tire pressure monitoring system (tpms) stems were rusted. The valve stems for the spare tires were also rusted and the tire had never been used. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where they confirmed that the valve stems needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the valve stems were not covered under warranty. The valve stems were not replaced. The failure and the current mileages were 16,000.

11 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2012

While driving my vehicle down the interstate for about 10 min at a speed of about 72miles per hr, my Jeep started shaking from the front and back. It was so intense I felt as though I was going to crash. I have had tires blow and u joints go bad and this didn't compare. I don't drive in a rough terrain and not often at these speeds. But I felt as though I had no control. When I decelerated to 50 the shaking had stopped. There had been no previous warning of this problem. When taking it in to get looked at the dealer said there was nothing wrong. The next day I took it in for the same problem and my universals need replaced, axle seals are bad and my drive shaft needs to be replace.

12 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2012

After being alerted to a low tire pressure on my Jeeps tire pressure management system, I stopped to check the tires and add air. When I removed the valve stem cap on the rear drivers side tire, the valve stem which was severely corroded, crumbled and fell apart. I had to take it in to have the stem replaced. The mechanics that frequently change my oil have stated that all of the other valve stems are in the same condition and are in need of replacement. These are costly item to have replaced.

13 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. While driving approximately 50 mph the tire pressure light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact noticed the rear passenger side tire was flat. The contact replaced the tire with the spare tire. Vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated the valve stem on the tire had fractured causing the tire to loose air pressure. The mechanic replaced the valve stem. The valve stem on the spare tire was also replaced with a rubber valve stem. The contact noticed the valve stem on the front and rear driver side and the front passenger side tires were also cracking. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. Da.

14 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2012

I was driving the Jeep down the highway through construction zone and it vibrated violently after I drove over a bump. I had to slow down very quickly during rush hour and was almost hit in the rear by another care so the wabble would go away. I took it to have it fixt and was told this is common. I looked it up online and was amazed. For a newer vehicale I was floored that it was not covered by Jeep. I have an extended warranty too. I took it to Jeep and they told me I had to pay to fix it, so what was I going to do drive and unsafe car (and it is unsafe, another car almost hit me). I paid to have it fixed. They replaced a damper and guess what there is still a wabble. This is the most rediculas issue and yet Jeep will not stand behind a poor design that they clearly know is a problem. So, I am looking for help making it know that if there is an accident involving this problem I have advised Jeep and now NHTSA. I will surely contact an attorney and become very public that there has been warning of this. All I want is for my wife and kids to be safe in a car. Jeep should step up and correct there problem.

15 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

While crossing 2 lanes of on coming traffic in the middle of the day the abs, esp and traction control lights came on and would not let me push the gas along with the right front brake "locking up". Because of the traction control coming on when I accelerate from a stop, even slowly, the engine responds as if I was slipping and losing traction, sputtering power and then all of a sudden it just stops. Now this has happened a few times within the last couple of days which is very scary considering there is absolutely no warning and can happen at any speed while driving. I have read some other forums on this issue and it seems to be pretty common with the make, model and year of this vehicle. This should not be taken lightly and should be fixed by Chrysler as it is a manufacturing defect.

16 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2012

The tire pressure monitors and valve stems in the Jeeps need to be looked at. We have had two literally "blow out" of our tire in less than 2 months. The last time my husband and son were traveling on the highway and lucky they weren't hurt or killed as after it blew out the tire shredded and they ended up on his rim. I called Chrysler/Jeep and they have me a case #. Our local Jeep dealer and a local tire store apparently told me this is a common problem that the valve stems/monitor rust and the seal isn't good on the tire anymore so they blow out. . . We could replace for $80 if we wanted. . . However there is no guarantee it won't happen again. Only way to fix it is to replace all monitors with rubber valve stems. I wasn't willing to wait on the "case" and have my family's safety at risk so I had them replaced on our Jeep. Of course Chrysler says there is nothing else they can do now b/c we handled it ourselves. We weren't asking for money or for them to pay -- all we want is to make sure this doesn't happen to someone else. They are aware of the problem and won't do anything about it. Someone is going to get killed. These can blow out at any time or place. My husband and son are just lucky. Please help get this problem taken care of before someone gets injured or dies!!!.

17 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Death wobble as shown on websites, going 50 or so miles per hour , front end wobbles uncontrollably!! uncontrollable, extremely unsafe at time ,when shaking and wobble starts!!! has almost caused an accident on each of the <<<3>>> times this has occurred!!! why is NHTSA and Jeep waiting for people to be killed before something is done to help everyone on the highway with this obvious safety issue??? very scary and frustrating. Think of your family's life as well as all of us!!! we are all at risk . How many lives need to be lost????.

18 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2012

Destroyed new tires/wheel and Jeep fender. Wife and daughter this time at 65 mph. . . 2 independent Chrysler Jeep dealerships service manger say "very common problem. Nothing they can do to stop from happening again". Both service managers say they" will not warranty the issue, it is the owners problem. " . . Someone will be killed by this failure !!! called Chrysler directly and started case # with them. . . Said same thing. " will not warranty issue. . Nothing can be done at this time to fix. . Just bring it to a dealer and hope it doesn't happen again. . " someone will be killed by this failure !!! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. 19 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

Vehicle shakes uncontrollably around 55 or when I hit a bumb , took the Jeep two the garage and explain what was going on and was told it was the tires so bought new tires and wasn't the problem , I looked up the death wobble and seen many people with Jeeps have had the same problem and Jeep Chrysler won't do a recall and they should because this can very much cause an accident when you have no control , this is left up to the owners whom thought they bought a good product to figure out and pay to fix a problem that Jeep Chrysler should of fixed in the first place but it's all about profit and not safety !!!.

20 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2009

Purchased new 2009 Jeep rubicon and picked it up at the dealership on wed. 3/3/09 with 6 miles on the odometer. Drove less than 2 miles to private property and drove up dirt hill (nothing that a Jeep couldn't handle) & it got stuck. Left rear wheel wasn't turning even though in 4w low. The wheel should have been able to move the entire vehicle since it was in 4-wheel drive. The driver got out to check the wheel and the fire was under the back of the vehicle & a loose hose was leaking some liquid. The driver tried to put out fire and was unable to. The fuel tank cracked (unkown if due to fire or if it caused the fire) and Jeep continued to burn since tank was full. The vehicle is a complete loss. Driver sustained second degree burns to right hand and his legs. No other injuries. The car fire started a small grass fire that was quickly contained. No structures were damaged, less than an acre burned. The dealership towed away the car for inspection. It is still unknown as to the reason for the wheel failure and the start of the fire.
