Excessive play/slop in steering and death wobble at highway speeds.
Steering stabilizer defective, causes severe wobble when you his any type of bump (like a bridge seam) when traveling over 30mph. Wobble makes the car uncontrollable and only goes away if you slow down to under 30mph. This makes the vehicle unsafe to drive on anything except city streets. The wobble shook the vehicle enough to cause secondary problems with the alternator and suspension/bearings.
This vehicle is not safe due to the "death wobble". My 2018 Jeep Wrangler with only 36,000 miles has become unsafe to drive. Anytime it's driven over 30 mph there is an almost uncontrollable, violent shaking that occurs. What is being done about this? is it going to take serious injury or death to happen for this to be recalled?.
In right lane of us19 south bound at about 58 mph, experienced extreme frame vibration after driving over deterioration of asphalt portion of road (which I have driven over hundreds of times with no abnormal effect). Immediately DE-accelerated and pulled over into the grassy area of the shoulder of the road. Got out to inspected vehicle, especially the front end structure and wheels for any sign of damage; I could find none. Carefully drove the Jeep home and again inspection the undercarriage of the vehicle for any sign of damage; none found. Took the Jeep into a local shop for extensive inspection of the the vehicle suspension, steering, tires, etc. For any indication of damage which would have caused the above situation; none was found. Even when I drove the Jeep after the situation, it drove normally. I had taken the Jeep in for the 48chz: recall v88 recall on 20apr20 and 48chz: recall y95 (reconfiguration or power steering assist/electrohydraulic power steering (ehps) calibrations) on 2jul18. I am a retired marine corps officer and I do not do any "off roading" driving with my Jeep, only normal hi-way driving. I have done no modifications to the front end/lift of the Jeep. Therefore, I am concerned why I have experienced this condition; possible the "death wobble" even though I have had the recall "fix". I can only deduce that I experienced what was called the "death wooble" which the Jeep jl was experiencing when it first came out. My Jeep only has 27,318 miles on it. Thank you for your time in this matter and I look forward to receiving some form of response. Respectfully, clifford wyllie ltcol. Usmc retired.
I own a 2018 Jeep Wrangler jl (4-door) that I bought new. It only has 7,522 miles on it and has never been off-road. On 12/3/22, I was driving on the interstate at the speed of 70 mph when my Jeep began shaking vigorously and the steering became almost uncontrollable. I had to take evasive action, move over to the far right lane and slow my speed rapidly. Once my speed was under 30 mph, my Jeep began driving normally again. This occurred when I drove over the beginning of a small bridge where there was a minimum change of the driving surface. As I continued driving on the interstate, the same action occurred when I drove over the next change in the surface road. This time I was only traveling at 50 mph and had to slow down to 20 mph to get the vigorous shaking to stop. I took it to my local Jeep dealership today (12/5/22). After they inspected my Jeep, I was advised that the steering damper was weak and outdated. I was also advised that they had already replaced the steering damper once due to the "customer satisfaction note" issued by fca. The dealership then stated that fca has revised the steering damper since the one that was replaced under the note but that I would have to pay for this repair because fca hasn't issued a recall or safety notice regarding this known issue. At the low miles of 7,522 on a Jeep Wrangler that I bought brand new, I am going to have to pay for a repair to a known safety issue. Even after replacing the steering damper that they knew was defective once, I am going to have to pay for a 3rd steering damper that has been revised because the 2nd one put on by fca was defective. This is a serious safety issue and is known by fca but they are refusing to admit the issue and are making their customers pay for their defects. I will include a copy of my service report from the Jeep dealership.
When driving a low speed, if the vehicle hits a bump, it will start bouncing and the steering wheel shakes too much until I stop and then everything comes back to normal. That situation is very frequently and very dangerous, because it happened to me many times while driving on a highway with a heavy traffic behind me, due to the fact that I have to slow dawn almost to stop to be able to control my vehicle. The dealer said that my car doesn't have extended warranty due to a type of tile (total loss) and the repair cost will be 100% out of my packet. I'm a retired person and do not have that type of money to pay for the repair.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds above 55 mph the vehicle had experienced the "death wobble" causing the front end of the vehicle and the steering wheel to severely shake and vibrate. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was contacted regarding the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the manufacturer's customer satisfaction program that addressed the failure. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.
On August 3,2022. I was driving on the city street crossing the railroad track on 40 speed zone. As soon as it passed, the Jeep starts shaking for a minute or so then it stopped. So I thought it was weird but I though it might have been just the railroad on October 22, my sis and are on the freeway, about to merge to the left lane to a different freeway, I felt the Jeep was hitting a pump. Then immediately the Jeep starts wobbling and shaking that I wasn't able to hold on the steering wheel. I was soo scare that I'm going to hit the other cars and cause accidents. I took the foot off the gas paddle , just let it be while I'm still holding the wheel. Trying to move to the right lane , it was just impossible. The Jeep was like jumping around. The wheel was so stiff just cannot move. Finally after awhile the wobbling stopped. I slowly move the Jeep to the right lane and drive to the nearest exit. Then I called the dealership right away and told them what happened. Will get back to you soon, that was the answer I got each time I called that day. Which I had called at least 4 times. Next day my friend told me to take this dependable car dealer shop, it has lots of good review and highly recommended. Left the Jeep there for couple of days> it was tested with high speed with high bumps. No problem was found. Since then I tried to avoid the freeway, I got nervous driving on the freeway with these bad experience nov13,22 meeting a friend because of the distance I have to get on the freeway. I was more conscious, I'm holding steering wheels with both hands. After 7 to 8 miles , sure enough the wobbling starts but since I have both hands holding it , I was as frightened as the precious time. After the wobbling stopped, I drove slowly to the destination. With all these scarcely experience. Every time I drive , I'm really nervous. Finally I took it to the dealership. It was diagnosis the steering damper. Unfortunately, it was back order till March or April this year. So,.
While driving the 2018 Jeep Wrangler jl, the vehicle began to shake violently along with the steering wheel. I had to pull over and slow to a stop to make it stop. I was running at a speed of about 70mph.
This started out intermittently after hitting a bump in the road, but now the vehicle shakes uncontrollably at 50 mph and above. The vehicle feels like it is falling apart. I need to put my hazzards on and move slowly to the side of the road and come to a stop to get the shaking to stop. I have several videos of the condition, but they are too large to upload (11mb and 33mb). I am taking my vehicle to the dealership in hopes they can fix this. There is an open class action lawsuit with Jeep over a similar issue. I also have already had the steering stabilizer recall performed.
Severe "death wobble" occurred on the highway at 70 mph after running over a bump in the road (bridge seam), let off the accelerator and the wobble increased. I experience "death wobble" routinely with this vehicle but, never this bad. Stock, no lift or modifications, 45k miles, properly inflated newer tires and steering damper replaced. Vehicle steering feels consistently unstable and cannot drive more than 65 mph.
I purchased my 2018 Jeep Wrangler and has less than 13k miles. I been having alot of front shaking (death wobble) since purchasing the vehicle. I have heard of complaints about the front end shaking violently and have had this problem a few times. Especialy at highway speeds if I hit a pothole as such. I can get it to stop if I am able to slow down and apply light brake pressure. I have checked all the steering for tight ess and even had the track bar replaced (as per other owners). But still have the problem occasionally. As for alignment, the Jeep runs really well and straight without problems. I hear theres possible problems with the aluminum steeringg box (which I do have) vs. The steel steering box (I hear has a recall??). Is there any other issues as this is really scarry. Other than the replacement track bar everything is stock on this vehicle. Behicle was purchased from cascade auto in wenatchee washington 22 July 2022 with 10,893 miles.
I purchased my 2018 Jeep Wrangler 4 door saharah unlimited summer of 2022. The vehicle had less than 10k miles on it when I purchased the vehicle. Vehicle runs really well and alignment seems to be perfect. But occasionally at freeway speeds, usually anytime above 40mph. If I hit a bum (even road reflectors), either on a straight road or in a turn. I'll get a really violent shaking. I can get the shaking to stop by slowing down and applying gentle braking with reducing speed. Checked all the suspension connections and seemed tight. But again at speeds usually above 40mph, if I hit a bump or in a tight turn the violent shaking will occur. I've put less than 5k on the vehicle since purchase and the problem still exists. The vehicle is stock, stock tires, and never been offroad. I have changed out the steering dampener and track bar (heard most common problem). But still have this death wobble. Were nervous to take the vehicle on any long road trips with this issue. I saw online possible issues with possible weak welds for the steering mounts (track bar). We really love our Jeep, but not trust taking any long trips out side of where we live.
The contact leased a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving approximately 60-70 mph, the vehicle experienced death wobble. While riding over a bump in the roadway, the vehicle vibrated and shook abnormally. The contact was able to pull over. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to another dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the contact would experience what had been commonly referred to as "the death wobble" when hitting a bump or an object in the road. The contact stated that no warning light would appear on the instrument panel during the failure. The vehicle had been taken to the local dealer and the stabilizer bar was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
The Jeep Wrangler jl sport s (2018), has been having steering issues (death wobble) while driving at highway speeds whenever it encounters a bump or potholes at speeds greater than 60mph. The only remedy is to break and slow down to 40mph, this poses a safety hazard on interstates and highways as the vehicles behind have limited time to react and operating this vehicle while it is vibrating is extremely hard and dangerous in traffic. Myself and my wife have been victims of several road rash incidents as the vehicle's behind don't know what is going on when we slow down to stop vibrating, they have honked us and have even followed my wife for 5 miles harassing her on the interstate. We have an infant at home and are concerned for his safety as he travels with us in the Jeep. The car dealer continues to recommend replacing the "steering dampener" as a remedy but having replaced it twice has not fixed the issue. We need fca to fix this as soon as possible as operating this vehicle in this condition is not acceptable.
Purchased slightly used with only 34,387 miles. When driving at a higher rate is speed (62 or more) if the vehicle hits a bump (like when crossing the threshold of a bridge or hitting a bump in the road while in a turn) the passenger side suspension shakes uncontrollably. As per news articles, fiat Chrysler automotive is aware and recommends a new steering bump. This seems to be a temporary solution, part easily and quickly wears out and must be replaced. Mechanic state that is not a proper solution. To pay this type of money for a vehicle and then repair bills only to have to repeat. Major concern is when driving on a highway or freeway you can’t always safely slow down in traffic, especially with semi trucks.
On high speed turns when you hit a bump just right the steering wheel/column shakes violently and the entire front end vibrates to the point where it feels like control of the vehicle is lost.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, the contact heard a cracking and popping sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The sound was heard when the vehicle would slow to make a turn to either the right or the left. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that there were missing welds and cracks on the spring perch on the driver’s and passenger’s side of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
My vehicle is suffering form the defect described in this recall notice - https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2019/mc-10169208-9999. Pdf however, my VIN doesn't show as being recalled in the NHTSA lookup tool. This week the same experience was observed while driving over 50mph and hitting normal bumps in the road. A wild vibration/oscillation takes over the vehicle and presents a safety concern for myself, passengers, and motorists around me.
I took to my local mechanic after noticing that the car shakes very time I hit bumps while driving my mechanic inspected it and noticed that there's a crack in the the weld in the front track bar bracket. Same as the safety recall ua5 that fca has for the same year and model Jeep for that year and when I called them they said that mine was built after that by a month.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and going over bumps in the roadway the vehicle was difficult to control. The contact stated that while merging onto the highway at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle drove over a small bump in the road and became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that he was able to safely slow down and pull to the side of the highway to avoid a crash. The local dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the steering box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and suggested that an appointment be made to diagnose the vehicle. The failure mileage was 16,791. The VIN was invalid.
I have experienced out of nowhere violent front end shake on 4 different occasions since purchasing a used 2019 Jeep Wrangler sahara three (3) months ago. It cannot be reproduced as I cannot determine what exactly causes it to happen but on at least two occasions I was traveling along highway bridges. There are no warning lights or messages prior to the violent shake. I have had a tire store employee look at the vehicle and have been told the steering damper should be replaced however after researching my VIN noticed that this has been completed at least once already according to the mopar site. It is very dangerous in my opinion as you will have to keep your wits about you to keep from losing control of the vehicle. Most recent occurence 2:00 pm interstate 20. January 9, 2022.
My Jeep experienced sever wobbling, as if the front wheels were coming off. So, I took it to a repair shop and they said it was the "death wobble. " when I took it to the autonation Jeep dealership, south, columbus GA. I was told that they had a recall on that 2 years and 3 months ago, and since the 2 year warranty expired, there was nothing they could do about it. If a recall doesn't work, then isn't the dealership still required to fix a manufacturer defect? my Jeep had an additional recall, which the dealership performed last week, and the dealership thought this new recall (computer update) might fix the death wobble problem. When I picked up my Jeep last week after this second recall, my heat and a/c no longer worked--all controls on the Jeep no longer worked. The dealership said they just followed the procedure in the recall, and since the recall resulted in the loss of my heat, a/c and defrosting, that I needed to deal with Jeep USA. I have submitted my case to customer care (fca us, llc) at Jeep USA, and they are telling me they might be able to ship a part in 6 weeks. My car has no heater. No accountability. I need to be compensated for the damages they have caused to my Jeep! thanks, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle drove over a bump in the roadway and experienced the death wobble. After slowing down, the shaking stopped and the vehicle drove as designed. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
I was driving my wife's vehicle at the time of this incident. While driving at highway speeds (55+ mph) I went over a cracked/uneven section of the roadway. The steering column began to vibrate and jump in my hands. The front wheels were rattling and bouncing, making it difficult to control the steering path of the vehicle. It was only after slowing down the speed of the vehicle that the rattling / jumping of the steering column stopped. The uneven section of road I had gone over hadn't been that severe enough, I thought, to cause any damage. I drive over that same route several times a week and it was no different than before, other than I was driving the Jeep. I asked my wife if this had ever happened to her before. She said it had, but it stopped and she thought it may just be a wearing or broken steel belted radial tire. We were getting the tires replaced soon. After getting new tires, the problem is persisting. The mechanic did not find any damaged wheels or tires, the steering didn't appear loose or damaged. After checking this site for vehicle recalls, but finding none, I was perplexed. After conducting further research I found out about the "death wobble" and fca's customer satisfaction notification v41 steering damper fix.
Driving 72 mph on the interstate when I exited a bridge, there was a bump in the road. The front started to vibrate vigorously and the steering vibrated so hard that I almost had a wreck. Slowed down to 40 mph and the vibrating stopped.
Driving 72 mph on interstate, crossed a bridge and as I exited the bridge hit a rough spot and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler I was driving, suddenly the front end started vibrating vigorously and the steering wheel starting vibrating so bad I almost lost control of the vehicle. Finally I slowed down to 40 mph and the vibration stopped. I am afraid to drive the vehicle at a high rate of speed on the interstate because of the possibility of having a wreck. This need to be taken care immediately by the company at no charge to me. The vehicle only has 5500 miles on it. I bought it new.
I was driving down a major highway at approx 60 mph. The entire vehicle started violently shaking; uncontrollably. It was very difficult to control steering. This continued for approx. 2 minutes. No warning lights came on.
My vehicle has extremely bad death wobble, only 55 thousand miles on it. Its a extreme safty hazard ! I just had my tires rotated and balanced and the problem is not any better ! once I hit 65 mph its shakes uncontrollably and I have to slow down to 40mph to get it to stop! that is extremely dangersous on a highway to be driving like this ! it has been like this since I got my car at 33,000 miles in August 2021.
When traveling at 70mph+, certain bumps will cause the steering wheel to shake violently. The wheel is impossible to hold on to. You have to show down to around 50mph to get the shake to go away. It was taken to the dealer and although I explained it has happened multiple times, they said they were unable to replicate it and therefore unable to make any repairs.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the front wheels started to shake and wobble. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was corrected independently. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the steering bow and track bar to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but continued to experience the failure. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,480.
I own a 2108 Jeep Wrangler jl with 32,100-miles on the odometer. On three separate occasions in the past month, while driving on the highway at 60+ mph, my steering and front suspension has started shaking in a wild, uncontrollable manner, forcing me to nearly bring my vehicle to a stop. The situation seems to be initiated by hitting bumps at highway speed, which triggers a run-away, violent, harmonic shaking (not just vibrations). I had the tires rebalanced and alignment checked, but the same thing happenedthis extreme shaking is definitely not a tire issue. I'm not only concerned for my safety; but if this continues, the violent nature of this shaking will most certainly damage other components of the suspension or steering.
Steering wheel shakes horribly. I feel every bump in the streets. Sometimes it feels as if I am about to lose control of my truck due to the lack of control. I have replaced the suspension, I have replaced the lower control arm, the ball joints twice and the same thing keeps happening.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21v028000 (power train) and an unknown campaign number. The contact was informed that the part for the second recall was not available and the dealer suggested that the vehicle remain at the dealer until the part became available. The contact stated after 30 days the vehicle was returned with both recalls completed. The contact stated on may 20,2021 while driving 80 mph, the vehicle experienced the death wobble. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that he had taken the vehicle to the dealer a total of five times however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 41,000.
