While driving my 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe on the garden state parkway and approaching traffic on the driscoll bridge, a turtle warning icon suddenly appeared on the dashboard, indicating limited vehicle performance. Moments later, the dashboard displayed a message instructing me to "shift to park. " immediately after this warning, the vehicle suffered a complete hybrid/electrical system failure and lost all motive power. The vehicle became completely unresponsive, and I was unable to accelerate, move the vehicle, or restart it. The vehicle came to a stop in an active travel lane of the garden state parkway on the driscoll bridge, leaving me stranded in live highway traffic. This created an immediate and serious safety hazard, as vehicles were approaching from behind and I was exposed to the risk of a high-speed rear-end collision. The vehicle could not be moved under its own power and had to be removed from the travel lane and towed to a nearby parking lot. Roadside assistance later performed a battery reset, which temporarily restored vehicle operation and allowed me to drive the vehicle home. No permanent repair was performed, and the cause of the failure remains unresolved. The vehicle currently has multiple open safety recalls, including recall 68c involving the high-voltage battery system. Stellantis has also recently announced an additional recall involving electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring and fire risk. The primary defect is the sudden loss of propulsion and complete electrical/hybrid system shutdown while driving, resulting in the vehicle becoming disabled in active highway traffic without warning. This defect created an immediate risk of a serious crash and could have resulted in severe injury or death.
On April 17th 2024 my vehicle received a recall update 68c regarding the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle battery. Two days later, I was driving on a major freeway in southern California, noticed that the ev battery was not being depleted as it remained at 100%. Shortly thereafter, a check engine light came on, and the power was severely restricted. Within a few minutes, the vehicle completely lost power in the middle of the freeway and I was able to get over to the right shoulder. At this point, the vehicle had no power and I could not turn the vehicle off either regarding the electronics. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership in san diego, and by the time it was at the dealership, the vehicle was in full lockout mode and had zero battery power left and could not even lock the doors. This caused a significant safety hazard as I was with my [xxx] child and the vehicle just completely lost power on the freeway. The vehicle is now at the dealership and they are giving me a very hard time saying that there is nothing wrong with it, but I have read that there have been many problems with this recall update. The dealership told me that the problem was a bad 12 v battery and that I needed to pay to replace that and I argued with them that that was not the problem and they are not addressing the major issue with a complete power loss on the freeway after a required software update that has known problems. I am submitting this complaint regarding a new safety incident involving my 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe after completion of the repair associated with recall 68c. The recall 68c repair was completed on January 28, 2026. After that repair, the vehicle experienced new and serious operating failures. The vehicle repeatedly tripped my home charging circuit during charging attempts. In addition, the vehicle's electric mode malfunctioned despite the battery showing charge. The vehicle then experienced loss of propulsion and stalled while driving, creating a serious safety risk. Because of this incident, the vehicle was towed through Jeep roadside assistance and is now at schumacher Jeep in [xxx] for diagnosis. The vehicle is currently not safely operable. Recall 78c also remains open with no available remedy. This complaint is being submitted as a new safety incident following completion of the recall 68c repair, and it should be reviewed together with my prior odi complaints, including odi xxxand odi xxx. I can provide supporting documentation, including recall records, repair records, tow documentation, and dealer information. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
After a recent recall (68c) for my 4xe the driving characteristics of my vehicle have totally changed. Accelerationis delayed and jerky with the engine cutting in and out very unpredictavely now. Electric range has also gone down in a real world scenario. Jeep has not clarified or explained that the recall did to the driving dynamics of the vehicle after the recall.
I am writing to report an additional safety?related incident involving my 2024 Jeep Wrangler rubicon 4xe. This vehicle previously experienced propulsion issues that I reported under NHTSA case number 11692887. On the morning of February 4, 2026, while driving to work on a busy interstate (approximately 12 miles from home), the vehicle again began exhibiting propulsion instability. The vehicle experienced repeated surging and thrusting movements that became progressively more severe during the drive. During these events, the check?engine light intermittently illuminated and then turned off. This incident occurred exactly seven days after my vehicle was evaluated by sam leman Dodge on January 27, 2026, for three open safety recalls. At that visit, I was provided paperwork indicating that the issues had been addressed. However, as of today, the official Jeep/mopar recall website still shows multiple serious and active safety recalls for my VIN, including recalls involving fire risk and sudden loss of motive power. After the February 4 incident, I contacted the dealership, and their service department advised me not to drive the vehicle and recommended that it be towed to the dealership for evaluation. I followed this guidance due to the severity of the propulsion behavior and the safety concerns involved. Given the recurrence of propulsion instability, the worsening severity of the surging behavior, the dealer’s recommendation not to drive the vehicle, and the presence of multiple unresolved safety recalls, I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in ensuring that the manufacturer addresses these issues and restores the vehicle to a safe operating condition. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Recognize that this is the second time I have emailed the NHTSA regarding propulsion issues with this vehicle (earlier case number 11692887). Please help me build a relationship with Jeep to ensure this vehicle is restored to a safe condition.
My Jeep Wrangler 4xe now has controlled/limited electric propulsion while driving in electric only mode after 68c recall was performed. With no warning while driving in electric only mode, my vehicle will not accelerate without accelerator press almost to the floor to activate the internal gas engine. This behavior on a cold run starts out fine, but as the vehicle(electrical system) warms, the limitations come on strong can catch the driver completely off guard if needing to accelerate quickly to merge into traffic or enter freeway on ramps. This erratic behavior is both dangerous to the driver along with other drivers on the road. My dealer has driven the vehicle on a short(in town) test drive and concluded the vehicle drives as intended by the manufacture. No warning are lamps visible, and as outside temps rise, this issue seems to be more apparent. This electrical behavior started the day I received my vehicle from the dealer after 68c recall was performed. The software that is now installed on these 4xe vehicles seem to be limiting/cutting the electrical output of the onboard high voltage battery to limit or eliminate heat stress on the internal battery known to catch fire and burn under heavy load. This creates a safety hazard to owners who drive these vehicles that basically stall out(no acceleration/dead pedal) without warning given to the operator prior to the software limiting the battery output to the vehicle drive train at will. When this occurs the electrical boost gauge on the 4xe dash will not rise above 25% no matter how far down you push the accelerator pedal, where normally(when not limited by software) the gauge can reach 100% during the electrical acceleration process.
The hybrid system in my 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe repeatedly fails, causing the vehicle to lose propulsion, drop out of electric mode, hesitate, and shut off while driving. These failures have occurred in traffic and at highway speeds. The vehicle has experienced multiple safety?related power?loss events, including on jr allen parkway and I?185, where the hybrid system failed to transition between electric and gas modes and the vehicle began losing power. Beginning in April 2025, the vehicle generated repeated Jeep connect alerts stating “electric charging failed for your vehicle. ” these alerts occurred dozens of times over many months, indicating an early hybrid?system malfunction. The issue is not related to home charging equipment, as the alerts come from the vehicle’s telematics system and the hybrid system later failed while driving. On February 5, 2026, the dealership’s service director informed us that the defect was identified, no fix exists, and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Fca has not provided a remedy. The vehicle cannot be safely operated in electric mode due to hybrid?system failure, and it cannot be safely operated in gas mode due to engine?related safety concerns. The vehicle is unsafe in all modes of operation. This defect creates a serious risk of collision due to sudden loss of propulsion, inability to accelerate, and unexpected shutdowns while driving.
After having the 68c recall software update completed on my Jeep at an authorized dealership, I now experience sluggish and decreased acceleration (even deceleration) upon pressing the accelerator more than half way (approximately). This happened twice on hills in which I needed to increase power while in electric mode. What happened was the Jeep seemed to lose power and decrease in speed while trying to go up the hill. I continued pressing the accelerator farther down and the Jeep seemed to be even more sluggish until all of a sudden the combustion engine kicked in at a very intense level and high rpm, lurching be forward, almost into the back of another vehicle. The sudden decrease in power to an even more sudden and drastic (sharp) increase felt dangerous.
After the 68c / NHTSA 25v-741 recall was completed, the Jeep can be difficult to drive and will dangerously lose power or accelerate unexpectedly. When driving in electric mode it will suddenly lose power and often start the engine abruptly. I've nearly been rear ended when it lost power, but also almost crashed into the car in front of me when the engine started abruptly and gave full power unexpectedly. This is a new characteristic since the recall was completed. I spoke with the dealer assistant service manager, and he said that unless the vehicle is displaying an error or warning, that it is operating as stellantis has written the software for the recall. I spoke with stellantis and told them of the severe safety issue, and that I feel unsafe driving it. Since I've been told this defect is normal, I asked for a refund/return. They said "sorry" and can't help me and referred me to arbitration. This is a defective vehicle that has been rendered even further defective. Stellantis refuses to take any responsibility.
I was driving my car when it powered down and had an unrecoverable loss of propulsion. It's a miracle I didn't crash and kill myself or anyone else on the road. This aligns with NHTSA recall number 25v-766. Jeep dealer identified the issue is failed transfer case assembly, then had to replace transfer case motor, then updated the software for the electric battery, but that software update is an ineffective remedy for the recall. I'm afraid to drive car because it might spontaneously catch fire or power down while driving again, which is terrifying because you lose all steering control. My car has been at the Jeep dealer in lynnfield, massachusetts since January 7, 2026. The Jeep dealer said they couldn't buy my Jeep from me because they can't certify it's safety due to open recall. I can't park car in my parking garage or anywhere in boston per recall notice. Bought Jeep Wrangler rubicon x 4xe brand new 1/20/24 for $76,500 and have $25,000 of equity/payments in it, but it has a note of $52,500 outstanding and due to recall issues the car is only worth maybe $32,500 but should be worth at least $60,000. I want manufacturer to buy my car back from me because it's under warranty and they can't fix the battery in a way that makes it safe to drive or even park near anything.
After a bad ota update in October, in November before the stop charge recall was issued I noticed on Nov 21, when in "electric" mode, after 10 or so minutes of driving the vehicle loses the ability to accelerate past half application of the accelerator. This lack of power continues until the accelerator is fully pushed on the floor forcing the gas engine on and causing immediate and dangerous acceleration. After this incident on the 11/21, I didn't charge again until I had the 68c recall performed where the dealer told me they think it's fixed. On my way home from the dealer it happened again. From here I emailed the dealer over the holiday and sent them videos of the problem. I opened a case with Jeep and brought it in. I was then told they replicated my issue but that it's normal now since all the updates. They refused to go for a quick ride along and closed my Jeep case with no resolution or help. This problem that did not exist before the ota update. I don't know if it's related to the ota update or related to the a7c recall, wither way I don't feel safe driving this with any amount of charge in it, even though the dealer gave an ok to charge. The dealer wants nothing to do with addressing this because I think they can't fix it since there is no cel or codes in the computer. I don't know what to do from here. You will find attached the email chain and see youtube addresses. I can share these directly if needed or produce much better ones. This is completely repeatable and consistent.
I am reporting an unresolved safety recall on my 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe (recall 78c). This recall involves manufacturing debris left in the engine, which can cause sudden loss of power while driving and, in some cases, engine fires. There is currently no fix available for this recall. Despite the known safety risk, stellantis is instructing owners to continue driving the vehicle. I have told the manufacturer that I do not feel safe operating a vehicle under an active safety recall with no remedy, but I was told there is nothing they can do. This vehicle is leased, and while a separate battery recall (68c) was addressed with rental reimbursement, stellantis is refusing to provide any interim accommodation for recall 78c, even though it remains open and unresolved. Being told to continue driving a vehicle with a known risk of sudden power loss or fire, with no repair available, presents a serious safety concern for drivers and the public. I am concerned about the risk of an accident or fire occurring before a fix is available.
This is a 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. It currently has 22,700 miles on it. These issues began prior to 20,000 miles. The car stops driving with out warning. This has occurred on three occasions, while driving in traffic. It locks up, but power is still working. A message pops up that says put the vehicle in drive. . . Which it already is. It comes to an abrupt stop. It will not regain power. You have to power on and off multiple times to get it to start. Recently it failed to start (engine). Again, had full power, but the engine would not start. It also will not charge fully to 100%. The display screen will bling or go black, with no power. The steering wheel will shake uncontrollably while driving over 65-70 mph. These issues began in summer 2025. One incident was in sept. Oct, Nov, and Dec 13 was the last.
On December 10, 2025, at approximately 7:30 pm, I experienced a complete and sudden power loss while driving home. Without any warning, my vehicle shut down entirely in the middle of the road. I was unable to move the vehicle to safety, shift it into park or neutral, or regain any control of the vehicle. This left me stranded in an extremely dangerous situation, exposed to oncoming traffic and at significant personal risk. Due to the total failure of the vehicle, I was forced to have it towed to a Jeep dealership. A vehicle of this age and condition should not experience a catastrophic failure of this nature—especially one that creates such a severe safety hazard. This incident has caused serious concern regarding the reliability and safety of my vehicle. A complete loss of power while driving is unacceptable and could have resulted in a far more serious outcome. I am requesting a full investigation into this failure, a clear explanation of the cause, and immediate corrective action. Additionally, I expect Jeep to address the safety implications of this issue and provide assurance that this will not happen again. Please treat this matter with urgency. I expect prompt communication and a resolution.
My vehicle is affected by multiple safety recalls related to the high-voltage battery / charging system. The recall instructions include safety restrictions such as not parking near structures/buildings and limiting/avoiding charging (or following specific charging precautions) due to a potential safety hazard (including fire risk). Despite these warnings, there is no available remedy/repair at this time, and an authorized dealer has confirmed the recalls apply but cannot complete the recall repairs. Separately (and repeatedly), while driving the vehicle has displayed a “stop safely / pull over” warning message multiple times. Each time this occurs I must pull over immediately due to concern for a sudden loss of propulsion or unsafe operation in traffic. This creates a significant safety risk to me and others because it can occur unexpectedly and could lead to a crash, loss of power, or being stranded in an unsafe location. The condition has been reproduced multiple times. The vehicle is available for inspection. The exact root cause is unknown at this time, and I have not received a permanent fix.
I own a 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe that I purchased in September of 2024 from charlie's Jeep in augusta as a used car with just under 5,000 miles. Now it has about 11,888 miles and has been un-driveable since December 1 due to unresolved safety recalls. The car is a certified used Jeep and is under warranty and has two current major safety recalls, one of which does not have a solution and a fix. The first recall is for a faulty hybrid battery that can catch on fire, and the second recall is for residual sand left in the engine, which can cause a sudden loss of propulsion and/or fire. This sand can migrate to other parts of the car, so an engine replacement would not be a complete fix. Currently, the car has a "do not drive" recommendation from Jeep and as a result, it has been sitting at the dealer since December 1, 2025. Because of the recalls, the value and safety of the car is very much depreciated. I have tried to work with Jeep and the dealer on a reasonable solution to no avail.
A recall for the possibility that sand may have entered the engine during casting has been in place since November 2025. To date, stellantis has not provided a remedy that, in my opinion, should require a complete engine replacement. I am required to travel extensively, often hundreds of miles at a time, for work, and this is my only vehicle. I am frequently on freeways with a speed limit of 65-70 mph. Knowing there is a chance my vehicle could suddenly suffer a catastrophic engine failure and fire at these speeds is absolutely terrifying, not only for me and any injuries that I might suffer, but also for the drivers sharing the road with me.
The vehicle experienced a loss of motive power while stopped at a traffic light and would not accelerate when the accelerator was pressed. The failure appears related to the powertrain/electrical system. The vehicle was unable to move and required a restart to regain propulsion. The vehicle remains available for inspection upon request. This failure placed my safety and the safety of other road users at risk due to the inability to proceed through an intersection as expected, creating a risk of collision. The problem has not been reproduced on demand, but it has occurred at least once and is consistent with an active safety recall (a7c) related to loss of motive power. The issue has been discussed with the manufacturer and a dealer, both of whom confirmed that no repair or interim remedy is currently available. The vehicle has not been physically inspected by the manufacturer due to the lack of an available repair. No warning lamps or messages were present prior to the failure, and the loss of propulsion occurred without warning.

To address what system failed: the engine shuts off while driving at highway speeds without warning. The electrical system suddenly and completely shutdown. Loss of propulsion while driving. To address the safety for myself and others at risk: the vehicles sudden loss of propulsion at highway speeds created an immediate risk of rear-end collision, loss of control of the vehicle or being stranded in active traffic lanes. Surrounding vehicles were forced to brake and maneuver unexpectedly, placing myself, passengers (children) and other motorists at risk of serious injury or death. No warning lights prior to failure and the vehicle will be inspected on February 2, 2026 at westgate in raleigh.
I purchased this certified preowned vehicle in the month of 10/2025 from manahwkin Jeep. Ii drove the vehicle aproximately 1000 mile since I purchased it. I contacted the dealership that the vehicle is hybrid battery not staying charged and that the motor is stalling and losing power when I drive it along with abnormal sounds from the engine . I had to pull over and recycle the ignition numerous times . When I checked the oil I noticed that there was a dirt /sandy substance on the dipstick, the service advisor told me this is normal and I believe is abnormal . I feel my issues that I am experiencing are consistent with the current recalls 68c and 78c . I feel that the dealership is giving me the runaround.
I lease a 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe (VIN [xxx] ). On 10/23/2025, while traveling about 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost propulsion and the dash displayed “put in park to drive. ” I had to coast through traffic, stop, shift to park, and fully restart to regain drive. Within minutes it recurred. This defect is unpredictable and dangerous. I regularly commute on the ohio turnpike at highway speeds and I cannot risk driving this vehicle because it can cut power without warning, leaving me unable to accelerate while surrounding traffic closes in. I am avoiding highway use entirely and limiting all driving due to the high risk of rear-end collision during a power loss. The vehicle is unsafe to operate until a permanent remedy exists. Background: the vehicle has previously exhibited powertrain/electrical issues (including overheating) and spent ~2. 5 weeks at the dealer over the summer. Early incidents occurred under 18,000 miles. Recall context: mopar and NHTSA show an open safety recall a7c / 25v-710 on my VIN for loss of motive power; status “remedy not yet available. ” the vehicle is available for inspection by NHTSA or the manufacturer. I can provide screenshots/video of the “put in park to drive” message and repair records upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
My car has shut off three different times while driving, completely losing power in the middle of the road. It then turned back on by itself and suddenly accelerated on its own. The check engine light is on, and the sos system keeps activating and won’t turn off. What’s worse is that after taking it to the dealership, they’re now trying to return the car to me even though there’s an open safety recall that hasn’t been fixed. This is a major safety concern that needs immediate attention.
The vehicle experienced repeated loss-of-power and stalling events while driving, including after a software update, which required the vehicle to be towed to a dealership. Similar drivability issues occurred earlier after purchase. The vehicle currently has multiple open safety recalls. Despite repeated attempts to work with the manufacturer and assurances of follow-up by assigned specialists, no direct contact or resolution was provided. My wife will no longer drive the vehicle because it has stalled due to software loads, and we can’t park it in our garage in fear of fire and there are other recalls as well. We bought it because it was electric and Jeep advised you should not plug it in to charge the battery.
We are aware of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe software update which basically disables the Wrangler and have been diligent about selecting the red x to not accept the update. This morning on my son’s way to work the update went through anyway resulting in a loss of power forcing him to stop the vehicle. Thankfully he was able to limp the Jeep to our local service station where the firmware over the air update “fix” was able to be applied and the vehicle is functioning again. This is a major concern for several reasons, he was a minute away from one of the busiest interstates in new york, where this could have been a very serious incident, second the vehicle updated regardless of user input to defer or not install. Had we not have been prepared for this because of social media, not Jeep, this would have had serious implications.
The car installed an upgrade over the air, in the background, and while driving it shut down. It flashes the screens and shut down while in drive on a busy road. Steering wheel locked and had to turn on and off aeveral times just to move slowly to the side away from oncoming vehicles. After looking online, found article about this issue across the country in the models, and tried the reset instructions. Eventually was able to keep it on and drive slowly to the dealer about 25miles away. They've had it since yesterday saying they reaching out to engineering unable to figure out how to fix.
It updated the software then after that while I was driving the car suddenly died. Lost power. Almost got hit from behind but I was lucky to be able to get on the shoulder.
After installing an ota update . The vehicle kept stalling while I was driving it . It stalled 3 times in less than half a mile . Completely stops midway all lights on dashboard start flashing asking to be put on park then start . This is extremely dangerous while driving especially on freeways. I almost got rearended at least 3 times when this happened. My safety and the safety of everyone on the road that day was risked.
Car flashed “shift to park”, stalled in an intersection and now check engine light is on. This is related to Jeep’s ridiculous and unacceptable software issue. Despite a “fix” being allegedly issued by Jeep, this issue still happened today November 14th despite me never accepting their flawed software update. This is an alarming safety issue.
Driving down road, approximately 25 mph the Jeep abruptly stopped, nothing no power to any part of the vehicle , loss of drive power. Thankfully no one was behind me for sure I would have been hit in the rear, I am so afraid to drive the vehicle , as this has happened on two occasions late September and October 14 2025. Already. The dealer confirmed it as I sent a picture of the dash board that was taken the second incident , with all the things that lit up. No not one time was there any warning, messages or lights prior to incident. I contacted deaership to make apt was told "dont bring it in" there is no remedy, "ican give you the 800 number for Chrysler/Jeep" early November I got recall notice for the battery that could "go on fire" or "blow up" - I called and the dealer gave me an appointment for 1/20/26 - 3 months??? iasked if they can also address the 2nd recall for this problem that has occurred 2 times out of nowhere was told we will go over this when you come in. I requested a loaner car thats why they made my apt 3 months away, they claim didnt have a loaner until then. Went on 1/20/26 the tech called me twice once to tell me there is no remedy to fix ac7 problem and they will see what can be done about "battery issue recall, called again asking ridiculous questions like how are you charging the vehicle, are you using an after market charger, as if you didnt lease me this vehichle with the charge. . . I felt like they where trying to say any issue was my fault. I sent the tech a text to let him know that I really am not comfortable picking up the vehicle without the no remedy for the issue and concerned for my safety and the safety of my family. He said "you should be alright" "you should be ok to drive", I told him that I wasn't reassured that I "should" be ok??? I said I wanted to discuss getting a loaner or replacement vehicle, he said that was not going to happen & if I didnt pick the vehicle I would be charged $50/day for loaner.
After a uconnect software update was performed the vehicle shutdown. Upon starting the vehicle the check engine light came on with several other dashboard lights and after driving the car for a few seconds the engine would shut down and would say to park and turn off vehicle. After a couple restarts and experiencing the same shutdown two more times I was able to drive in e-save but felt the vehicle was in limp mode and the engine light still remained illuminated. Called the Jeep dealership and explained the problem and the first thing they asked was did you just do a software update. I said yes and he said that’s the problem that they just had 35 Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s towed to their dealership yesterday. He said that Jeep does not have a fix for the issue as of yet. It throws a fault code p1e1d. So seems that the recent uconnect software update is rendering all Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s useless.
While driving on the road the vehicle suddenly loses power and shuts down. The check engine light illuminates and a message saying shift to park appears on the dashboard. You have no control of speed at this point. The vehicle stops and stalls in the middle of the road. Once you shift to park you have to completely shut off the vehicle while in the middle of the road and restart the engine. The vehicle will drive a few hundred feet and repeat the stall. It is completely scary and dangerous.
After an ota update, while driving, the vehicle abruptly stopped working and I was forced to pull over. The check engine light went on and a message requesting service to the electric charging module was shown. After cycling power a few times the car worked again. This happened again on the way home. The manufacturer Jeepcares account advised that the car needs to be towed to a dealer immediately.
The Jeep die while I was driving on cr530. Check engine light came on and stuff flashed I quickly pulled over rto the shoulder. After ten minutes I was able to drive it into a dunkin donut shop but it turned off three times risking my life each time. I had my hazard lights on but people dont care. Called dealership and waited for the Jeep to be towed.
After an ota firmware update, I started driving as normal for a couple of blocks, I stopped to pick up my wife who was walking. She got into the car, loses the door as I began to accelerate the car suddenly stopped, the engine quit immediately. I put the transmission back in park I was able to restart and proceed to my destination a short distance away. The check engine light was illuminated. After an hour stop I started the vehicle to return home it drove normal and the cel cleared itself. My concern is that this could happen again and could be catastrophic at highway speeds.
