Flexible steering coupling failed. Poorly designed rubber coupling disintegrates at less than 80k miles. This creates one inch or more of play in the steering wheel and makes a loud clunking noise.
The contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. While driving approximately 60 mph, the steering failed without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,000.
