Seat belt for left rear seat does not function properly. The female part sinks into the seat pocket when attempting latching such that it will not accept the male portion of the seat belt. The harder the push of the male part, the more the female portion retracts into the seat. I have brought this problem to the attention of my kia dealer on two occasions but they claim it is a design or manufacturing problem and they cannot offer a solution, in spite of the safety concerns I have for my passengers - especially my grandchildren. This is not acceptable to me and I hope it's not acceptable to the nhsta either. I hope you will investigate & ultimately force kia to offer a recall. Thanks for your attention to this matter. The contact owns a 2017 kia Optima. The contact stated that the air bag indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to weseloh kia carlsbad (located at 5331 paseo del norte, carlsbad, CA 92008 at (760) 496-3131) where it was diagnosed that the front passenger side seat belt was defective and caused the light to remain illuminated. The voltage alternator assembly needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle inadvertently drifted to the right and left. The vehicle was then taken back to weseloh kia carlsbad, but no diagnostic codes were found and the failure could not be replicated. The vehicle was not repaired. On several occasions, while attempting to drive, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 300.

Rear passenger side seat belt buckle will not latch/unlatch properly. When buckling, it won't latch without jiggling and reinserting several times. Latch won't always release when unbuckling. Vehicle is stationary when attempting to latch and unlatch. The fog lights do not function at all the antenna wiring is defective. Satalight radio will not pick up unless the brakes are used and then for just a moment the connection is made and the station can be heard although staticky and unclear. But only does it sometimes and when car is driving and the brakes are appiled.
Seat belt would not release,it got tighter ann would not release while in lowe's parking lot. There were 4 people and an off duty policeman tried to help and finally stated that the belt would have to be cut and they did. I was in dire stress and breathing problem and in dire need of immediate release. A definite safety issue.
Optima's driver's-side seat belt stopped working and the back seat middle seat belt, (rarely used), stopped working due to inability to click (lock) into place. Car is a 2013 kia Optima gdi & is in excellent condition in every other aspect seen & known.
The contact owns a 2010 kia Optima. While the vehicle was operated, the passenger noticed that the seat belt was not connected. The warning chime did not indicate that the seat belt was not latched. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the service manager diagnosed that the failure was inherent to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,500.

Rear seat belts in cloth seat configuration do not hold the buckle in an exposed position so that a child or an adult can reasonably operate it. Most vehicles have a plastic sheath that hold the buckle exposed so that it is accessible. It is almost impossible to put a child seat on the seat and then attempt to buckle a child in place. This design is a safety hazard as users will be frustrated and omit using the rear seat belts.
I was attempting to get out of the car. I unbuckled my seatbelt and then leaned forward to pickup something off the floor. When I started to release the seatbelt and the shoulder strap pulled my head into the head rest my my neck. The more I pulled the seatbelt to loosen it, the tighter it got. Nothing helped. Finally my friend who had been driving, removed the side panel and then removed the locking mechanism on the seatbelt to release my neck.
While sitting at a traffic light, a vehicle rear-ended my 2010 kia Optima. The driver hit my kia so hard, I hit the mustang in front of me. No air bags deployed upon either impact. Kia was drivable, but there were noticeable differences in the way the car drove (I. E. Started pulling to the right, wheel shaking, etc). This was the evening of 01/23/2014. On 01/29/2014, the steering wheel locked up and collided with a parked vehicle (totaling the kia) @ 28-30 mph. Again air bags did not deploy, and the impact lifted me up and my head shattered the windshield from the top. Seat belt was in use, but did not lock upon impact, failing to secure my body. Major concussion received along with multiple bruises, cuts, and scrapes. Investigation unable to determine the cause of the steering malfunction due to the extent of the damage.
A child was sitting in the rear center seat when a snapping sound occurred while at a stop sign. Upon investigation the seat belt mechanism broke, causing it to not retract or lock. Second seat belt to break on this vehicle, a year apart. Concerned this is a safety issue as seat belts are required by law.

The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, who stated that the retractor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 78,000.

The rear passenger seat belt was jammed. I pulled it a few times and it became unjammed and I fastened the safety belt around my 4 year old child. Approximately 3-5 minutes later as I was driving I smelled smoke. I started checking the control panel and turned off the a/c and radio and rolled down the windows. The smoke stopped so I continued to drive about a mile and stopped the car in a parking lot. I was there approximately 4 minutes when I smelled smoke and turned my head to the rear of the vehicle towards my child. My child screamed for me the same moment I was turning my head and there were flames melting the plastic casing around the seat belt cover. The flames almost reached her head. I frantically got in the back seat and removed the safety belt and pulled her from the car to safety. The entire interior of the car was burned from the fire. There were no burn injuries due to the fact that I was stopped and able to remove myself and my child before the flames engulfed my car.

A 5 year old child was sitting in the backseat behind the driver while driving 25 mph and a loud pop occurred. The seat belt mechanism broke. It was taken apart and found that the inner workings of the seat belt are plastic and a small plastic clip that holds the spring broke, thus a non working seat belt. Search to see if a recall was present. No recall but tons of threads posted of the same thing occurring on other kia Optimas.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Optima. The contact stated that while at a traffic stop, the vehicle was rear ended and none of the air bags deployed. The seat belt did not retract to lock her in, which caused her to strike her head on the pillar next to the windshield. A police report was filed and the contact sustained bruises and contusions. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 6,900.

We were hit in the passenger side and the entire side of the car was crushed and none of the air bags ever deployed and the passenger side seat belt did not lock. I had reported the fact that when someone was sitting in the passenger seat that the airbag light was not coming on to the car dealership that I purchased the car from but they just made excuses that the person sitting in the seat was not heavy enough even though they weighed over 150lbs.
I am unable to unlock my drivers side door either manually/key or by remote access this is a serious safety issue due to the fact that if I need to exit my vehicle in case of an emergency (fire and or crash) I would be unable to. Also, two of my rear seatbelts are jammed in the half extended position. I would appreciate any and all help you can give me with this serious safety issue.

Purchased a new 2011 vehicle, when we purchased the vehicle I went to the parts dept. And ask that the order some seat belt extenders for me. The manager said he would after 5 weeks I called the parts dept. He told me they have not come in yet. Another week goes by then I get a call from the regional parts manager stating they did not offer them. Period no and if or buts no. In your fmvss 209 require manufactures to provide longer belts or seat belt extenders to accommodate extremely large people. I was 480 lbs down to 360 but I still need some. I even asked the dealer to see if they would reimburse me. Sense I am on ssi. They refused but they did tell me where to go to find them. Seat belt extenders, the part that the shoulder belt snaps in to that goes in the latch, I am a large man and have extreme pain in shoulders and arms. With burcides and authorities, dealer refuses to supply extenders, its funny every other vehicle dealers carry them. Their lines offer them planes offer extenders. Kia dose not and refused to help consumers with disabilities. The parts manager even said when he worked for mercedes the carried 6 inch 8 inch and 12 inch. Extenders. I do not have the 40. 00 each I need two passangerside drivers side. Nothing for the back seat I can?t fit there. . . The person that I have been talking to is [xxx]consumer s affairs analyst southern reagion. Kia motors kais case # [xxx] her direct no is 1-800-225-3193 extension or option 4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. . . I need a 8 inch. We have had the airbag light come on for the past 3 years always just before the state inspection is due every time we get it fixed they said its a switch or a connector. But this year was the worst ,light came on in April, this time they said it's the airbag wire harness and would cost over 1500. 00 . We got kia to pay for the part, and we would cover the labor. I'm just worried will this happen again. It should be investigated further.
Both low beam headlights blow out simultaneously. When this happened, high beams (separate bulbs and switch) would only work sporadically (switched 'on', nothing. Switched again, may come 'on', turned 'off' then 'on' may or may not come on). Dealer states 'it happens, they burn out', yet said the battery needed to be replaced. (?) non warranty, so you pay. Another complaint on the same car year/make/model, same issue, has already been filed with you. In addition, 'google' search shows many entries for this same problem on kia and Hyundai vehicles (same manufacturer) over many models/years. Signs point to possible defective charging of battery by vehicle's electrical system (maybe why they replaced the battery at the same time). Battery was previously fine. I've had many electrical problems with the car, things stop working, then work on their own (power window won't work, sticks part open. Switch does nothing. Then suddenly later window lowers/raises without switch being touched. Trunk suddenly pops open). Definite electrical problem on these make of vehicles over many years which neither manufacturer is going to address themselves. Unless you do something, many will be paying for service caused by their negligence. . Also, seat belt does not retract all the time. My vehicle was purchased new.
The contact owns a 2005 kia Optima. The consumer stated their 3 year old son attempted to buckle himself in with the seat belt when all of a sudden if slipped from his hand and wrapped around the 3 year olds neck. The seat belt continued to retract and he could not free himself. The consumer wife grabbed the top of the belt and kept if from retracting even more, but was unable to release it. The consumer had to cut the seat belt. The following Friday the consumer and his wife were rear ended and the his wife had to go to the emergency the room because the seat belt had been cut a week prior. Updated 07/16/09. Updated 07/14/09.
The contact owns a 2007 kia Optima. The contact stated that when small framed passengers occupy the front passenger seat, the air bag warning light illuminates on the instrument control panel. This indicates that the front passenger side air bag is inoperative and may not inflate in the event of a crash that merits air bag deployment. The failure may result in injury to the passenger. The dealer stated that his model was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 08v161000 (air bags), although the failures were identical. Currently, the dealer is replacing the seat assembly, which contains the air bag sensors. The failure and current mileages were 23,000. Updated 09/13/08. The seat belt was replaced.
: the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle was filled with the smell of burning rubber. This was closely followed by an appearance of white smoke. The smoke was coming from the seat belt harness area on the passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the dealer was unable to determine the problem.

I own a 2004 kia Optima. The driver's side seat belt buckle became detached from the seat under normal use. I was parked and leaned forward in the seat and the buckle came out of the seat housing with a bolt and 2 washers on it. There appears to be no damage to any of the components. I see this as a major safety issue and will have the car at the dealer tomorrow for a hopefully free repair since the seat belt buckle pretty much just fell apart.
The seat belt was not long enough to accommodate weight, consumer was informed a seat belt extender was not made for vehicle.

I was involved in a crash on Nov 02. I was broadsided by a truck (f150 type veh. ) in an intersection. As a result, my roof bowed and the entire drivers side from wheel well to wheel well was caved in like a half moon. The frame was pinned up against the drivers seat. The seat belt did not lock but released me and none of the air bags deployed. I suffered back and neck injury and was transported by amubulance to a nearby hospital. The vehicle was in storage. I contacted the manufacturer numerous times as did my attorney. All we received was the run-around for approx. Six months. No return calls, excuses, unable to get a release to have a kia auditor look at the car, etc. My insurance company and my attorney sent them the release twice and still no response. Consequently, I deployed overseas (military) and upon my return found that the car had been disposed of (destroyed). I still suffer from my injuries and my attorney is still handling my case.
