36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

The engine has experienced what other kia engines have. Engine oil was either blocked or rapidly burnt up, causing the engine to spin a rod bearing, thus needing a new engine. Luckily I stopped driving immediately, preventing a fire; as has happened in other kia vehicles. Sadly, kia is refusing to warranty or recall the hybrid engines, even though many are experiencing the same issues.

Nhtsa recall 17v224000 my 2012 kia was supposedly not in this recall but my car bearings according to independent mechanic are already wearing out prematurely at 84000 miles . The car will lose oil pressure and knock (bearing) blow white smoke and stop in the middle of the interstate. This happened once in stop and go traffic and once traveling at 65 mph where car decelerated to 30 mph. Car has always been taken to kia dealership for service but they claim they can not see the service records and will not cover under purchased warranty without them.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/08/2018

Properly maintained kia Optima Hybrid ceased operating while being driven on a highway. Symptoms appeared electrical in that all of the vehicle indicators illuminated, then stopped as the vehicle also stopped. When trying to restart the vehicle, the engine ignited in "eco" mode (the hybrid engine started), but the gas engine did not and the vehicle was only marginally road-worthy. It would not get up to speed. Upon examination by a kia dealer, they said they found "large metal pieces," in the oil pan and recommended replacing the short block and reconditioning the cylinders. This is despite the fact that the vehicle had had an oil change the day prior, and had been fully operational, with zero maintenance failures in the 5 years I've owned it. Kia has recalled its gdi engines due to complaints that are strikingly similar to the issue here, but were patently unsympathetic regarding the gas electric hybrid.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

The vehicle is getting stuck on electric mode and not switching over to gas and losing power. Having to pull over and turn car off and back on the reset it. Car only has 2500 miles. 43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/23/2018

Bought a used 2012 kia optima from a kia dealership on 1/12/18. I did not drive this vehicle from 1/13/2018 - 1/19/18. Started driving this vehicle and 5 (five) days later, on 1/23/18 the vehicle blew a rod in the engine. After several unsuccessful attempts at having the dealership fix the issue at their expense, I was getting nowhere. I contacted kia headquarters and they assisted me with communication with the dealership and getting the engine rebuilt (as a goodwill by the dealership). Had the car towed to the dealership on 1/25/18; they had my vehicle for exactly 1 (one) month while the dealership rebuilt the engine. I received the car back from dealership on 2/23/18. On 3/6/18 as I was driving on freeway, the car started to lose power while driving. I was driving at approximately 70 mph on freeway, and car just started losing power. The car slowed down to approximately 40 mph and engine oil light turned on & off sporadically. No matter how much I tried to accelerate, the car would not go over 40 mph. This was very dangerous as I was scared that I would get rear-ended on the freeway. I slowly moved over the shoulder and turned off the car; I waited approximately 30 minutes before turning the car back on and proceeding to my personal mechanic (not kia dealership). My mechanic said not to turn car off; he inspected car & scanned it. No error codes were detected. He said maybe it was a fluke and to just continue to drive it. On 3/12/18 the same thing happened again. This time I took it to my local kia dealership and left it. After a scan & test drive, the mechanic could not find anything wrong with the car. Mechanic drove it the next day over 80 miles and this time he did experience the same reduction of power. He scanned vehicle again but no error codes show. It's still at dealership 3/19/18.

At 116,000, while driving in city car would decelerate and jerked "hybrid warning system-do not drive" light came on. When backing out of parking space, car would jerk backwards. Took to dealer who diagnosed that it needed new transmission. Took car to my mechanic who provided better warranty on transmission work. Replacing transmission has not fixed car.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 10/21/2017

Without warning while driving the engine started knocking when the ev wasn't working, just engine. I coasted to a safe place with the ev and had it towed to my mechanic which stated it was the rods knocking and he knew about the kia engine recall so he asked me to find out if mine was under warranty, apparently the kia engine recall doesn't include my car once I gave them my VIN number. Its disturbing to know that it probably should be in the same recall but they say its not. . . How do I go about making sure its not really covered?.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/14/2017

Vehicle was in motion at 35 mph and suddenly lost acceleration, woul d not go faster then 15 mph for about 1/2 mile then gave message "hybrid system failure, please pull over and turn off vehicle. " the dealership service department says they have replaced the engine with a used one, replaced the hyper-transmission? and the battery. Dealer has ignored requests for further information & itemization or invoice for the alleged repairs and the extended service contract originally only authorized $3851. 50 for engine replacement. The other troubles were discovered later, after the engine was replaced and while vehicle was still in dealer's service dept possession. The underbody or flaps underneath, flew off car as customer drove it home upon picking it up. Dealer assumes no responsibility for that or for cracking bumper in the front center of vehicle.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/31/2017

I was at a stop light waiting my turn, the light turned green, and I took my foot off the brake to put it on the gas. As I pressed the gas my car started to shake, no acceleration, and my dash lit up stating "hybrid system not charged pull over and turn off engine" I turned off my car, tried to restart it and it stated that my hev system (hybrid electric vehicle system) has failed. I luckily was beside a gas station and I threw it into neutral and was able to push it just into the parking section. I had to have my car towed to the nearest dealer to have it checked out. During the drive my battery completely died so by the time I got there it had no power. Changed out the battery and safety switch which had seemed to fail. (of course not under warranty). After spending $1,000 on repairs/labor the car still will not turn on and the engine seems to seize. After a little digging my VIN isnt eligible for a recall, though the 2014 kia optima is for the same exact issue. Hopefully kia will be able to figure out whats wrong because I really do like this car but a failing engine wont get me anywhere!.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/13/2017

On the highway at approximately 60mpg, engine started knocking as acceleration increased. Then acceleration would not increase and the car hovered at 60mph. After a few minutes and the knocking continuing, the car decreased to 40 mph. Then the warning came on and said "hybrid system not charged pull over and turn off engine". Then I pulled off turned off the car and attempted to restart it. It continued to present with the same warning. No energy flow through the engine. I had my car towed to my home. I noticed recalls for my exact vehicle with different VIN #'s and describing the exact same issues. A friend of mine sent me a copy of a recall notice after I described what occurred and it is all the same things they describe. Kia says my VIN# is not on the recall list. Kia refuses to fix the issue even though it is under 60,000 mile warranty, claiming the problem is due to maintenance. I purchased the car in January 2017 and it is now only April 2017. A whole three months. A car I just purchased should not have these issues.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/15/2017

The orange square wrench light on the dashboard came on but as soon as the car was turned off would go away. No trouble codes showed up. It happened 3 times in a week so once it popped on, went to the dealership to diagnose while it was still running. While driving there, the car had very little power-making the left turn into the dealership (crossing heavy oncoming traffic) was scary since the gas pedal was to the floor and the vehicle was barely moving. The dealership said the drive motor temp sensor in the hybrid system was going out and the car was in safe mode and had code p0a2b in the history. Because I am the 2nd owner of the car, kia will not cover the repair under warranty even though the car is under 100,000 miles. They designed this part so the sensor cannot be replaced-the entire drive motor must be replaced at a cost of $6251. This is absolutely ridiculous that a customer can be left footing the bill for a faulty and unsafe design. This is not something that a owner has any control over.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

While driving on a 4 lane highway, my car jerked and loss power, going from 60 mph to 20 mph. I had the car towed to the dealership and they said a threw an engine rod! the car had 108,189 miles on it. There is a nationwide recall on the kia optima already, but mine is not. It should! the bearing rods go out prematurely and that is exactly what mine did.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

While trying to park the car in the parking lot structure, the car accelerated beyond control on it's own and hit the wall head on. I was already in my parking spot and only few feet away when the car accelerated. The passenger air bag was deployed and body damage occurred. Everything happened so suddenly, I am not sure about the speed at the time of impact.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2013 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/24/2014

Shortly after purchase took a trip to texas to see my daughter. On three separate occasions on that trip; was going down the interstate with the cruise control set, all of the sudden it started accelerating all on it's own. . . The 1st time I questioned if I had accidently bumped something, the 2nd also and the 3rd allowed it to act on its own and before I knew it was almost 100mph. Thankfully the brake engages. . When I returned home I immediately took it in for check and was told they could not recreate the problem so nothing could be done. . It is currently at the dealer for the 5th occasion regarding the same issue. . I am afraid for my safety and the safety of others having this issue. I have been told if they can not recreate the issue there is nothing they can repair. .

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/06/2013

While accelerating from a dead stop, the car hesitated and stopped until it appeared to shift from electric to gas power. I thought at the time that it may have been a freak thing but this hesitation has recurred a few times since then.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Optima Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

When applying gas pedal to pull away from a dead stop--such as a stop sign or red light---car stumbles and hesitates. At times car will not even respond when gas pedal is pushed. Push the gas pedal and nothing happens--then you push pedal a bit more and it jerks and shoots forward. Not a comfortable situation when trying to pull into traffic from a intersection. Happens virtually every time. Cold or warmed up--same problem--except a lot worse at cold start. Once above 30 mpg things smooth out--but the big danger is trying to pull out into traffic. I have been to the dealer several times. They do a re-flash or whatever--then tell me it drives normal. No fault with the dealer at all--they have been excellent really--but--can't fix the hesitation. But driving normal--that's not true. They know they have a problem with this hybrid system--there is a web page that addresses this problem---everyone has the same problem. I can't even allow a friend or one of my kids drive this car. If you don't know how the cars going to react---your open to a serious accident. I have had a camry hybrid and two prius hybrids--no problems. I know how a hybrid car should drive. This car is unsafe for the driver and other mortorists on the road. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
