1 Brake Light On problem of the 2006 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/16/2018

Brake lights in rear came on during driving and remained on. After becoming aware of the issue, and replacement of the stop light switch which did not fix the issue, and after further inspection the problem was a design defect. The stop light switch has a "button" which when depressed interrupts the flow of electricity, there is an "ear" on the brake pedal which when your let off the brake pedal depresses the switch button and cuts the current. The problem is the button on the switch is around 1/16 in diameter, and for some strange reason kia drilled a 1/4" hole on the "ear" of the brake pedal within 1/16 of an inch where the switch button contacts the ear, which allows only 1/16 of a inch of the ear to depress the pedal, which in this case with my car with 50 thousand miles, allowed the button of the stop light switch to enter the hole in the ear on the brake pedal and not depress the button on the switch, which then allowed the brake lights to constantly burn. I suspect that normal wear of the brake pedal bushing allowed this to happen, the strange thing is there is no reason for hole to be in the contact area where the ear and the switch button meet. And with only a minor amount of the switch button making contact and the rest over the hole in the brake pedal "ear" it is not surprising that this would be the result. I have a manual transmission, and noticed the switch for the clutch pedal which requires the clutch be depressed in order to start the engine, it was set up with a hole very close to where the switch button makes contact. The above happened while was driving in heavy traffic on a highway on the way home from work.

3 Brake Light On problem of the 2008 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

My brake lights will not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. Thankfully, I had a friend following me to notice the problem, or else this could have led to an accident.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2007 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

Brake lights do not come on when applying brakes. This is an intermittent problem. Also there is intermittent problems of the gear shift to lock up and not be moved out of neutral. There were recall on other kia makes of the same year but the did not include the Rio, however I am having the same exact problem described in the kia recall.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2007 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 07/08/2009

The contact owns a 2007 kia Rio. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and another driver alerted that the exterior brakes lights were inoperative. The contact sprayed a lubricant onto the brake lamp switch. Three years later the failure recurred. The vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. There was a recall issued for other 2007 kia model vehicles under NHTSA campaign id number 09v130000 (component: exterior lighting: brake lights: switch). The approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Kia Motor RIO

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

Aug. 12, 2006 the harrell-swatty cos. 6 concourse parkway ne atlanta GA 30328-6117 dear mr. X: I am extremely disappointed in kia at arbor place. I took my car in for warranty service in March because the brake light kept coming on. I brought it back three more times, but the problem has not been fixed. Now that the car has more than 60,000 miles on it, the department would not work on it again unless I paid them. But they took it in to diagnose it again and did not tell me until I came to pick up the car that it would cost me $88 diagnostic charge to get it back. The brakes completely failed once. I was fortunate there was no accident. I keep adding brake fluid when the light comes on. Evidently there is a leak in the brake system. The car is unsafe. I want my $88 back, and I want the car fixed, at no cost to me. Yy zz has not replied to my two previous letters.
