I was leaving my house and had just driven a short distance when the check engine light and the esc off came on as the car slowed to almost a stop. I pressed on the accelerator and nothing happened. I got out of the car and raised the hood and the engine was idling roughly. I turned the car off and on several times but nothing chaged; it wouldn't accelerate and the warning lights stayed on. The esc off light eventually went out and the check engine light stayed on but I was able to drive it again. I took it to a mechanic who lubricated a throttle cable after checking the codes. It worked for a few weeks after that but the esc off light came on again intermittently after that. I am afraid of losing power when I am in heavy traffic, at an intersection, merging, or anywhere I will be in danger if I cannot move out of the way of oncoming traffic.

While driving the vehicle, you suddenly loose power. The esc off light and engine light come on. You are not able to accelerate. It's like the pedal is not there. You could be going 50 mph and then suddenly drop down to 20 to 30 mph without warning. There is a few codes that come p2106 throttle actuator control system-forced limited power p2138. Throttle/pedal position sensor/switch "d"/"e" voltage correlation. There are other codes that came up before and it also caused these issues. This happens while you are driving. Sometimes you can tell its going to turn on the esc light and engine light and going to loose power and sometimes it happens all of a sudden. When researching online about this problem, its a common problem with kia especially the Sedonas.

Vehicle was repaired in 2013 but by 2014 was acting up again. Same problem as initial repair. A recall repair that goes bad in within 20,000 miles is not a good repair. When asked to repair it again kia put in the wrong part I had to take it back a 3rd time to get it fixed. The total cost to my repair was $679. 45. The problem was that the car would not shift from park into drive and the esc light would go on,it took multiple tries to get the car out of park in order to drive it.

The contact owns a 2006 kia Sedona. The contact stated that the air bag and esc warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician stated that the computer in the front driver or passenger's side seat would have to be replaced. The technician was unable to guarantee the repair after replacing the part. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Esc light on. Lost all power and check engine light came on. Drove to dealership at 8 mph with hazards on.

I have been having an intermittent "non-start" issue with my car. I would turn the key and nothing. The lights would go on, radio would go on, but the car wouldn't do anything towards cranking and starting. No clicking noise, nothing. I would get out of the car open and close some doors and most of the time it would start. Also, I was driving on the highway when the esc off light came on. Whenever I stopped it would go off until I got back on the highway again. I had my mechanic plug it in to see if any error codes show, but there was nothing. I checked online and found a recall for these exact issues tied to the stop lamp switch, but when I took the car to kia dealership they said they had fixed the recall a couple years earlier. I bought a new stop lamp switch myself, (genuine kia part, not generic,) and had it replaced again. (cheap part of and installation. ) I then went on road trip and nothing was fixed. Esc off light was on nearly the whole time and I had a non-start during trip. There has to be another issue involved here. I live in new york city so I hardly ever am driving on highways, so road trips was only time I would see esc off light and I rarely if ever use cruise control, so I don;t know if I would have the cruise control issue tied to this standard group of issues either.
On two occasions we were unable to shift the van out of the park position. It appeared to be stuck. The first time it happened, my husband shut the van off, and turned it back on and it fixed the problem. The second time it happened, I was able to shift it out of park, but the "esc" light lit up on the dash board. After doing research on line, I realized this is a major problem on past kia Sedona models and I am concerned for my safety and the safety of my children in this vehicle. I have called the dealership and am awaiting a response.

Was on highway heading into construction zone , tapped brakes to disengage cruise control, cc did not disengage. Heavily pressed brakes, cc would not disengage. Vehicle is actually accelerating every time I step on brake. Abs/esc lights come on. Ultimately able to disengage cc on the column but not before accelerating to 80+mph heading into wall of traffic merging from three to one lanes and slowing to 45mph for construction zone. 20 miles later I pull into rest area hoping to clear error lights; turned car off and back on - couldn't get van out of park. After about 100+ restarts finally able to get van into drive. Limped home, flatbedded to dealership next morning. Still no acknowledgement of issue from service department 24 hours later.

We bought this kia Sedona from a dealer and from the time we bought it always had some starting problem. So when we took to the dealer they said it is the battery and replaced the battery and again the same problem and then they said to replace the battery connecting parts as they are not connecting right. Then had some fuse problems and had to replace some fuse and the ac was down replaced the ac. Again battery problem and not starting. The dealer said to replace a new battery and we said it is a new one, but told to put a kia battery and replaced it, after few days again car slow downed the speed while driving and stopped middle of the road. Had to tow to the dealer. They said it is the starter motor and replaced it. After a year, same problem - car was not starting and then finally they said it is the fuse box and had to replace the whole fuse box as it was not working right. I have two children and this is not safe to drive if it slows downs or stop while driving. I would appreciate if someone can check into it and as there will be more people like me having this problem. We have a Mazda but we have spend way more money and our time on this kia as it brake downs a lot.
Traveling at 70 mph, cruise control on, "esc off" light and check engine light illuminated on the dashboard and the vehicle decelerated rapidly. Lost ability to accelerate past 20 mph. Vehicle was stopped and restarted. Accelerator resumed working for about 50 miles and the same things happened again: esc off light and check engine light illuminated and vehicle rapidly decelerated and lost all acceleration ability this time. Stopped vehicle again and restarted and accelerator resumed working. This happened at around 2am. In the morning the check engine light remained on and the vehicle was taken to a kia dealer. On the way to the dealer the "esc" light began blinking (note: this is not the same as the esc off light), the acceleration sputtered, but remained working. The dealer stated that they retrieved the throttle position sensor codes, but they cleared the computer history and could no longer duplicate the problem and therefore it could not be fixed. They retrieved the codes, cleared the memory and want to send me on my way. This is the second time a kia dealer has cleared the computer memory and the vehicle was not fixed. I was told, by my local dealer to make sure the dealer does not clear the codes/history or it can not be fixed. I have called kia consumer affairs and am awaiting a response.
When brake pedal is depressed, the brake lights stay on. Electronic stability control malfuctions. Cruise control sometimes will not deactivate when brake pedal is depressed.
My vehicle suddenly stopped to react to the gas pedal, motor rpm fell down to ~1000 rpm - usually its idle value. The problem happened as I was trying to speed up while entering the traffic on a highway, and it created a dangerous situation. . Read more...
Electronic stability control: the vehicle suddenly stopped to react to the gas pedal, like motor rpm fail, usually its idle valve or speed control. . Read more...
I own a 2006 kia Sedona lx, purchased new from the dealer. Fall of 2010 we began having problems with the esc light off / check engine lights turning on. Once that happens you can't accelerate, even when you push the gas pedal down it does not work. When this happens you have to shut the car off, restart and pray it wont happen again. We took it to a kia dealer, they replaced a brake sensor light, which they said can cause the esc light to malfunction. It worked for a couple of months but now the problem is back, and worse than ever. The van loses the ability to accelerate without warning, on the highway, right after starting the car,. . Etc. We have four children and the van is just not safe.
1. Driving van on highway when esc and check engine warning lights came on simultaneously. 2. Vehicle suddenly loses all acceleration. Has happened twice in the past two weeks, both times at highway speeds. 3. Dealership indicates that this is a chronic issue with multiple models and that replacement parts have been redesigned to reduce failure, but that issues are so prevalent that parts are on back order and that it may take "2 weeks or 2 months" to receive parts to correct the problem.
Kia Sedona 2006 no response from the accelerator - the 'esc off' light is on. This can happen when starting up or when driving. Extremely dangerous.
Kia Sedona 2006 - engine stalled on highway, no response from the accelerator - the "check engine" light came on as well as the 'esc off' light. This can happen when driving in city or highway. . . Extremely dangerous! pulled-over, turned off engine then restarted to correct the problem. Dealer states tps (throttle position sensor) and/or accelerator position sensor malfuctioning.
Going uphill toward traffic light, accelerating to maintain speed for crossing intersection, check engine light on, esc light on, engine suddenly idling causing total loss of power near the intersection. Had enough momentum to pull on the grass shoulder. Diagnostic from garage: throttle sensor stuck. Extremely dangerous situation.
2 months while decelerating at red light, acceleration occurred while pressing brake pedal, stopped within a fraction of an inch from car in front of me. Last night while driving 70mph on hwy esc and check engine lights came on and lost all acceleration function. Car stayed idling but could not regain acceleration. Had to cross over 4 lanes of traffic to get to an offramp exit. Was able to pull over to small shoulder and had myself and 6 children standing on highway while waiting for roadside assistance. The exit was for another hwy so we had no safe place to stand but along the guardrail of 2 hwys. Was told to call a taxi and would be reimbursed. Now Kia Motors is telling me that since I purchased a fleet vehicle I am not covered under a warranty because it is at 70000. Purchased as certified reowned and was told it would be covered for 10 years 10,000 miles. Same problem was recalled on the 06 and 07 models but has not been corrected for 08 model. We all could have been killed!!! dealer was not even able to look at it yet and said they won't until tomorrow so here I am on the second day without transportation and do not know what it is going to take to be fixed. Internet searches and complaint search on this site reveal complaints of the same nature to numerous to count.
We own a 2006 kia Sedona, purchased used. The esc and abs indicators on the dash go on randomly on a regular basis. We have not addressed it yet with the dealer. Once the car is turned off and on again, the indicator goes away, but will eventually come back on.
Have had vehicle back into dealer 5 times, since Feb 11 first check engine and esc light on and van would not go push down on gas pedal and nothing had it towed in. They reprogrammed and then feb24th esc light on again. Went back in they replaced steering angler sensor. Van still not running right down shifts on its own. Took back they said found no problem to have trans fluid changed so I did and it still happened. Then driving down the road the van s brakes lock up and the engine revved up and almost went through the windshield. Called dealer next day they said I could not get an appt until oct6 almost a month away. I called back and asked if it was safe to drive and he said no I could bring in and they would get to when ever they get a chance, they had it for 5 days and said they couldn't find anything wrong. I went to pick it up started the van to leave and the esc light was on. I went back in and asked why? they took for a ride then put on machine said they needed to order the sensor to replace the same one they replace in Feb. Told me it was safe to drive home and bring back thur sept 22. 2011, so drive home get 2 blocks from home and the brakes locked up the tires squeal and I slid off the side of the road luckily I didn't hit anything. Scared me death. Had van towed back to dealer and its still there now. I called kia main office to discuss problem and how im very worried about the safety of my van. He said he'd call back yesterday but haven't heard from him yet. I tried to call him 2 times today and no answer. Then the dealer called said they did some reprogramming but still looking for the problem they are driving it to see if it does it for them if not they will just give it back to me. That makes me feel really safe I don't want to drive it until I know its fixed and safe. They acted like they have never heard of this problem before.
Only owner of 2007 kia Sedona, I was informed by another driver while driving that my brake lights did not work. I had noticed that the "esc" light was on my dash and did not go out. I called Kia Motors to inform them of this after I saw online that there was a recall and they advised that my vehicle was not involved in the recall and that I needed to take it to a dealer for diagnosis. I did and it was the same faulty brake switch that was on the recall but since kia said my unit was not included in the recall I have to pay for the part and repair by the dealer. I requested reimbursement from Kia Motors in good faith as what happened to my vehicle was exactly what happened to owners in the recall but they denied my good faith request.
We had to replace some sensors around 40,000 miles and now again at 60,000 miles the same problem,. . . The esc light comes on stays on and the engine loses power. . . . . The next time you start it up it may be fine for that whole trip. . . The next day the problem is back. . . .
We rented a 2008 kia Sedona van with the 3. 8l engine and it lost power in the middle of the highway at speeds of 65-70mph. The engine did not die, but the check engine and esc warning lights came on and there was no power being transferred to the transaxle. On the first van the incident occurred after driving only 50 miles, the replacement van was driven 1,286 before it too did the same thing. We informed advantage car rental that it appears to be a systematic problem with that make and model.
The contact owns a 2006 kia Sedona. While driving 75 mph, the esc indicator illuminated and the accelerator failed on the vehicle. The contact attempted to pull over and the vehicle decelerated. He turned off the vehicle and restarted it, but the failure recurred after driving one mile. The dealer stated that they would inspect the vehicle and reset the esc computer under warranty. The vehicle was repaired twice, but the failure persists. The contact believes this is a big safety hazard. The failure mileage was 39,000 and current mileage was 48,000. Updated 4/16/09 updated 04/21/09.
Received recall notice, called to have part replaced and shop manager said he ordered parts but didn't know when or if they would come in, recall notice says we may be at risk for crash. This vehicle has had a lot of recalls plus cant keep brakes or rotors on it. Definatly a lemon. Will try to persuade anyone not to buy a kia.
