20 problems related to gasoline engine have been reported for the 1998 Kia Motor Sephia. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Engine needs to be replaced. Dealer said engine was sludged up due to no regular oil changes. Consumer has had regular oil changes done at very same dealership, consumer does not believe that is the reason engine needs to be replaced. Kia is of no help.

Car's engine lights came on, we took it to the dealer , but problem could not be duplicated the first time, again engine lights came on, car drives poorly- shifts terribly, jerks and engine revs in idle. , we took it back, tune-up suggested, tune-up done. Still engine lights come on, we bring it back, pick it up when ready, return it for same problem, now on 6th return for repair since 7/17/00. I think it's a real lemon. I just want my car back working properly! it's a terrible car. If you want me to fax you the work orders/service history sheets I have I loved too.
The vehicle would suddenly loose power upon acceleration, the vehicle was taken to the dealer but no cause was found. Nlm.
The car got fire on engine room while it was running. I saw another Sephia 98.
The breaks have been a problem since I got the car every 2mo they need to be checked. The fire they said a rock or something cut a hose and it leaked causing the fire. Pls help me I have a lemon.
Infro on tire is wrong . Car is not with me it at the dealer for the same problem and this is the four time this has been work on and thelemon law is effect( dot number: xxxxxxxx tire size: 165/75r/13 ).
While driving 55 mph vehicle lost power without warning and died. No injuries.
Tail light had to be replaced because of leaking, this is 4th time for brakes squeaking and pulsating, cow panel baffle needed replaced because of water pouring in behind glove box. People I don't know pull me over and complain about their kia Sephias and similar problems with them. Also the engine sometimes won't start the first time. It takes two or three times once in a while. It also sounds like the engine will jump right out of the car because it jerks so hard when starting. The gas tank has yet to let me fill it all the way. It gets almost full, then spits the gas out and won't let you "squeeze " it full. It's like there is no venting going on. I have heard similiar reports from other owners.
Until now dealership nor manufacturer is cooperating.

Motor makes alot of noise when driving on wet or dry pavements, it doesn't matter. Dealer states no problem, and it is the design of the vehicle. Problem wa sfinally fixed.

The engine check light stays on, and the engine cuts off intermittently, causing loss of power steering. Dealer says gas pedal is being applied too hard.
While driving at 67 mph vehicle loses speed. Problem occurred 4 times. Cause of problem unknown.
The engine is not starting, battery replaced and other repairs completed however the engine is still not starting.

The engine just died while on a major 2 lane highway. Had hazards on and was hit on driver side.
