general problems of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento - part 2

On 2/15/22, I accelerated to pass another car while driving home from work. As soon as I accelerated, my car stopped running. I coasted to the next turnoff from a busy street (about 1 block) and stopped at the curb in a residential area. The control panel/dashboard was completely dark, then suddenly lit up again. I tried to start the car but couldn't because I was unable to depress the brake. I waited a few minutes and tried again and a small amount of smoke came out from under the hood. In a minute that went away. At this time, I was very near my house and walked home. When I got there I called the kia dealership (local) and described what happened. They asked if there had been a 'check engine' or other warning message before this happened and I told them there had not been. I said I guess I would have to have the car towed in to them to see what was wrong. I was told they would call back. While waiting for someone to call back, I walked back to my car. (all of this took less than 10 - 12 minutes. ) as I turned the corner I saw police cars and a firetruck where my car was parked. The fire had been put out and there was only a shell of the car left; the entire motor and everything inside was destroyed. Later, my insurance company declared it a total loss. A neighbor saw flames and had called the fire department. There was some damage to the neighbor's yard - grass and shrubbery. The police called a wrecking service to tow the car. It was later picked up by my insurance CO. No one was injured, thankfully; but I can only imagine what would have happened if I had made it home and parked in my garage. The local kia dealership never called back. I called a week or so after this happened and was told they would have someone call me and no one called (again).

1. My headlights tends to keep going out, I’ve replaced them 3 times since getting the vehicle. The most recent change was a month ago. Also my car keeps making this weird humming/ purring sound which started 3months ago and is very unsettling. I had to get a new engine last February after my car cut off on me and the kids heading to my family out of town.

Multiple electrical issues throughout the car that come and go. The door locks will stop operating when using the key fob and lock/unlock switch on the driver and passenger doors, the only way to unlock them is manually. Window operating switch at all four doors stops working. The control buttons on the steering wheel are malfunctioning (volume up button decreases volume, volume down button activates voice control). The digital fuel range number does not match up analog indicator (digital will read ~150miles range, analog will indicate 1/8 full tank). Low-beam headlight bulbs individually burn out well before expected lifetime, I have replaced each one twice in the last six months. All of these issues are available for inspection. Safety is at risk because multiple fluctuating electrical issues could mean a fire risk. I have not had these problems reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center yet. Vehicle and components have not been inspected. There have been no warning indications prior to or during electrical problems.

Constant issue with the 3 doors staying locked. Must manually push on the plastic mechanism to unlock the door from the inside. Using the inside door knob will not unlock the doors which is a major safety hazard. I have taken it to the dealer 3 times and they can not duplicate the issue. It started out happening intermittingly, but now it is constant. The only door that works is the driver side. I took it to a local repair shop and he said it "could" be every door needs a new actuator. Very expensive repair. This should be a recall item ASAP. Low quality product failure. There are no warning lights.

Car ran out of oil within 4,000 of oil change upon purchasing car. No indicator light came on ever for low or no oil. It cut off at 70 mph on highway. I got on shoulder, turned key off then restarted. Upon doing so every time the car gets to rpm level for gear shift it starts knocking. So if the cars engine is knocking the knock sensor should through service engine light which it did not. I have a) the dealer who rode with me to show him and it started to knock and shut off with him in the car with no check engine light on. Got back to their repair shop to which both mechanics witnessed the engine knocking with no check engine lights (mil. Malfunction indicator light. Failure).

After my engine was replaced, due to recall, the airbag light has been on causing check engine light to stay on. In addition to the air bag light, shortly after tlairbag light issue, all other dashboards lights came on and remain on. All buttons and horn on steering wheel don't work. Since they replaced my engine, my ac has never worked again. When I got it back to houston, it started smelling like was bad so I took to a mechanic. He said gas was spraying everywhere under the hood and I was lucky to be alive. Since the engine replacement it's been a disaster. All worked fine before engine went out and no lights were on.

I received notice mid August 2021 about recall and warranty repairs that needed to be made to my car. Brought it to the dealer on 8/30/21. On 8/31/21 I was given the car back and told, yes, it needed the repairs but I needed to wait for parts and they'd be in touch. I have heard nothing from kia, despite complaining to them several times.

Recall notices have been sent to us regarding possible airbag deployment, electrical issues, and now hecu controls and the abs system. Each time we get a notice, we contact the kia dealerships in our area for repairs. Every time we have tried to bring in our vehicle for safety recall repairs, the dealership has made it impossible to do so. For example, when we called to make an appointment for one recall notice, we were told that no action was needed unless we heard a loud banging noise coming from the engine. We stated that we heard weird noises but not a loud banging. We were told that the dealership cannot do repairs unless we show evidence of the banging. Also, there have been electrical problems with the car since we bought it – the buttons malfunction, the airbag light is always on, etc. This was not regarded as evidence of need for repairs. For another recall notice, we were told that the repairs could not be completed because they didn't have the parts. We received the safety recall number 21v331 on Friday July 17 and have tried repeatedly to contact kia of cerritos in order to make an appointment for repairs. The dealership does not answer their phones in the service department. At 2:30 July 19, I got through to someone in the service department. He said he would make an appointment to complete recall repairs but instead put us on hold and transferred us to a full voicemail box. We are very worried about the safety of our kia sorrento. This is our family car. Given the ongoing recalls and history of kia failing to provide safety repairs, I think this may qualify for the lemon law. This recall notice indicates that an engine fire may occur. The airbag light is continuously on. I am concerned for the safety of my family. We do not feel safe. I have contacted kia consumer assistance center and opened a case #14271977 but they have failed to reply.

Approximately 8 months ago noticed while driving that the headlights didn’t appear to be on while driving with normal low beam lights. High beams worked fine. Replaced both low beam light bulbs with sylvania standard kia recommended replacement. 1-2 months later after driving at night, lights still dim. Replaced with $90 halogen set, still not illuminating road. Took to kia dealership (where purchased) to have them check lights, said that entire headlight assembly for both lights need replacement for $2,489. 00. Aftermarket priced at $335/ea!!! service manager confirmed apparent problems with burned out headlight assemblies.

Upon driving home from a family road trip, I was flagged down on the highway by a fellow driver saying my car was on fire from under the passenger backseat. There were no warning lights or alarms from the inside of the car, or on the dash. I pulled over and the fire engulfed the engine and soon the whole car. It burnt down to the frame, with absolutely nothing left inside but twisted metal. It was deemed a total loss. The fire inspector and police on the scene believe there was an issue with the electrical system that caused the fire. There is a report available with the florida highway patrol. There are no active recalls for the vehicle, but I was told by kia there have been several fires in their 2014 models, including some when the vehicles weren't even on. The car was deemed a total loss and has been released to the insurance inspector and has over $14000 in damages to repair. It will not be repaired. My mother was in the front passenger seat, and my 6 year old son was in the passenger backseat, above where the fire began. Thankfully, we are all uninjured, but there is lasting mental trauma on all three of us.

After recall repairs their were no warning lights showing and diagnostics always came back clear. Car overheated in red hot with no engine alarms or anything. Mechanic stated it’s blown head gaskets.

Abs, traction, and tire warning lights all come on at same time, the tire warning light blinks for a minute or so. I checked for low pressure in tires and it was not the problem vehicle seems to function fine no traction issues no abs issues that I can see or feel in driving, saw the recall for the awd but mine is fwd.

Engine is failing and burning excessive oil, need oil change every 1k miles. Currently complying with oil consumption testing, however sensors are going on and I believe its due to excessive heat emitting from the engine. Service advisor submitted a goodwill claim for the abs, traction control, tire pressure & e-brake sensors and kia denied it. I just paid off my car, which is in great condition, and never had these issues. Kia just keeps doing oil changes and telling me to return every 1k miles. Also having ac issues, I recently found out my suction hose was leaking and had to replace it, after paying $160 for ac diagnosis. Broke down and paid $471 (originally $541 before discount) for a plastic hose and was told it would take 2-3 days to get here. About 27 days later, the part finally comes in, while my car happened to be at the dealership for a week unexpectedly. After getting 2 oil changes $140 in one month and driving for the first 1k miles after starting the oil testing, I went in at 8:30am to get an inspection on 3/15/21. I was informed that they would need to keep my car, and had to wound up getting a rental car. Another $239 I don't have. I then had to pay for labor and freon $286. After all the waiting and trouble I went through, suffering with no ac in FL, and spending a total of $1,296; they tell me after installing the part my ac compressor is bad and it would cost $905. So I still don't have ac! at this point, the engine needs to be replaced, I would like to be reimbursed for rental expenses while doing the oil testing, future rental/loaner accommodation because I know they will keep my car again, and assistance with the compressor and sensors. Being I paid for an overpriced hose, and the engine is failing. Now since last oil test, gas gauge does not match electronic range reading. Not sure if gas is full or not. When seatbelt dings speed gauge jumps.

I have a problem with the electrical, and I found that they already have a recall, but the van nuys dealer refused to fix it on the car.

My Sorento has started burning oil. It makes a terrible noise when running. Sometimes the lights for my backup camera doesn't work nor my radio. Sometimes the radio if on, station can't be changed. It is like it is in a frozen mode.

Cluster lights turned off while driving air bag light stays on.

I'm the first and only owner of a white 2014 kia Sorento. The paint is chipping off on the hood, bumper and door rail/column. After doing plenty of research this seems to be a common problem with white kia Sorentos. On social media there's a facebook group (kia Sorento pearl white paint peeling chipping and delamination). This group is filled with hundreds of kia owners who have this issue.

My 2014 kia Sorento needs immediate attention to the following issues. The issues are associated with “open campaigns”. Yet, my specific kia Sorento isn’t included. I have a bearing wear issue which has made the vehicle unsafe to operate. The car frequently overheats and has a major coolant leak. (17v22400). Also, the high pressure fuel pipe has appeared numerous times on my mobius kia nav system. (18v907000). In addition, my vehicle now has many electronics which are inoperable. For instance, the back up camera, the power windows and steering wheel controls. This could be a result of a hydraulic leak near the electronic controls. (20v51900) there’s an issue with the powertrain. In addition, the right front axle is loose. As a result there’s a considerable loss of power to the wheels. (13v35600).

On Nov. 11, 2020 I took this 2014 kia Sorento into the local kia dealer for a follow up on a recall notice I received in the mail. The recall was for an inspection on the hecu unit which controls the abs system, esc system, and the tcs system. The dash board indicator lights for the abs, tcs, and brakes are visible on the dash while driving this vehicle. The mechanic at the dealership performed a draw test on the abs module and determined everything was ok and no repairs would be needed for this recall (sc197). The vehicle does not appear to be leaking brake fluid into the hecu unit. My concern about this recall is why are the abs and traction control lights still visible on the dashboard. The recall was on these elements and kia should have corrected any electronic problem related to this recall. Is the problem electrical on these vehicles other than brake fluid leaking onto the hecu unit that could result in a fire.

Hi, I'm dealing with my kia Sorento sx 2014, rpm and acceleration problems, for over two long years, sometimes shut off itself, some times codes shows up but no all the time, already changed spark plugs, high pressure fuel pump and the connector, two injectors, starter, map sensor, etc. My mechanic tell me today that I need to change the wiring harness, so everything is just guessing and spending crazy money, also the dealer don't know the exactly is the problem, already two years with this frustration and still don't know what to do, please I really need a very professional advice in this incredible situation, some of the codes that shows up, if I'm lucky are: p0087, p0506, p2096, p0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304, p0305, p0306, p0133, p0137 and so. . . But right now all of these disappeared, I read in the NHTSA web site about the problems with engine and electric components reported with this car in this specific year and I'm really worry about my family and my safety while I'm driving this vehicle, please, please, please. . . I already went to many different mechanic experts (including the kia dealership) and still nobody knows what's producing this lack of acceleration in the engine at the time of starting and its subsequent shutdown. I rcv'd a letter from kia re the hydraulic elec cntrol unit that it may leak fluid and result in a fire. Ltr dtd oct 15, '20; rcv'd @ mid Nov. Have tried telephonic contact w/local dealer many times and get nowhere- no return calls, no commo whatsoever. Ltr states kia has advised dealers to inspect, but no interest from viva kia, el paso.

I have a 14 ki Sorento lx the electric system faulty and caused my vehicle to catch fire in one cabin near the gear shift the computer has shut down no longer recognizing the chip and the vehicle is fully disabled.

Noticed peeling and flaking of paint on roof after washing. Used non abrasive micro fiber handheld car wash mitt and turtle wax car soap. Backup camera is inoperable. Both conditions (premature flaking of paint and backup camera becoming inoperable) are known by kia for this make/model. No resolution is available other than to repaint/repair these items at owner's expense.

Tl the contact owns a 2014 kia Sorento. The contact stated that the key fob and automatic locks failed to lock the doors. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to wilson auto group (4202 lakeland dr, jackson, ms 39232, (601) 914-4200) where the keyfob battery was replaced. The system was reset and diagnosed that the motherboard needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 126,000.

Unfortunately while driving my vehicle on the highway it shut off abruptly.

I was driving straight down a 2 lane highway at approx. 55 mph and the engine abruptly shut off. However, all electrical components still worked, including the a/c, lights, and the navigation screen. I didn't even have time to think about what I needed to do, but I was able to pull into someone's driveway, as there was no shoulder on the highway that I could pull over onto. After pulling off of the highway, I placed the vehicle in park and I turned it off. I tried to restart the vehicle and every light on the dash was illuminated, but it would not start . None of the electrical components worked now after shutting the car off. Heard a clicking sound when brakes were applied. I checked oil on dip stick and oil was fine. The vehicle had over a quarter tank of gas. No lights appeared on dash before it abruptly died. Called tow truck to come get it and take it to repair shop. Mechanic says it is showing the problem could be in the main brain of the vehicle, and I will have to have it towed to nearest kia dealer which is 2 hours away. I just purchased this vehicle approx. 3 months ago with roughly 75k miles on it. I am the second owner with no prior accidents. I am greatly concerned about this issue with my 2014 kia Sorento sxl, due to the fact that it could have caused an accident and someone could have been seriously injured due to the engine just abruptly dying. This needs to be recalled ASAP!.

Camera, radio, lights on one side and power locks all stopped working.

My headlights keep blowing out. I have been changing them every 2-4 months for the past year. They suggested I check for recalls and nothing. This could be very dangerous and buying headlights every 2-4 months gets expensive.

I turned the engine off the radio and to unlock the doors were working because I had just dropped my kids off at school, went to turn the engine on the radio stop working the windows it won't go down stop working and the door opener button to unlock the doors stop working. The tire light keeps flashing and there is some wierd noise like vibration coming from the engine only when you start the engine and the air conditioner comes on full blast.

My vehicle has automatic locking doors and will lock automatically when shifting the SUV from park into reverse or drive and then will unlock once placed back in park. However recently this function stopped working altogether and the locks on the doors will no longer lock when shifting the car from park into another gear creating a safety issue. Furthermore, due to this electrical/safety issue the lock/unlock button on the door no longer works and as well due to the same issue. Nor can I lock the vehicle with the key fob. In googling this problem, I have found out thousands of other kia owners are having the same issue and the only remedy from kia is to replace a $1500 computer as in manufacturing they soldered a $3 relay switch onto the computer board and they will not /cannot replace the faulty relay that seems to be causing this problem. Hence this is the reason why I am reaching out to the NHTSA as I feel that this is a electrical /safety issue and the only way to lock my vehicle securely is to walk around the vehicle and lock each door individually. Please help me and the other thousand of kia owners whom are having this problem.

2014 kia Sorento will not lock the doors using the key fob or the door panel. So this means I have to walk around each door and lock them by hand. This is a big safety concern when traveling through high crime areas. Once all the doors are locked I can push the lock button on my key fob to set the alarm. I have changed the battery on the key fob still the same thing. With this going on it does cause a safety of my loved ones.

Engine seized with no warning. Complete engine failure. We have maintained the vehicle and have had no prior issues. The engine seized at 90,000 miles driving down the road. The check engine light never came on. We have the 100,000 mile warranty and kia has not covered the repairs to the engine. We were advised we need a new engine.

Door locks only lock and unlock occasionly. Batteries replaced in fobs still not operating properly. Read that slot of people have or had the same issue. Doors would typically lock when you drive. Use to not anymore. Had car in for recall on engine this year.

In the last two years I have replaced every bulb in my car and multiple fuses and for some reason there is still a short in my fuse panel so my brake lights constantly pop the fuse. It is cost me a lot of money and we still have not found out where the short is in the electrical system but my brake lights constantly blow a fuse and bulbs.
