Kia Motor Sorento owners have reported 26 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Sorento based on all problems reported for the Sorento.
An intermittent error occurs where these services stop working. It was last for a day or two and then the error will clear. I am not able to be alerted to passing cars or cars in my blind spot when changing lanes. And if there is a situation to suddenly stop the emergency automatic braking system will not be engaged.

On two separate occasions, my 2024 kia Sorento has activated its automatic emergency braking system, as if anticipating a potential forward collision on an empty florida highway. The dashboard lights illuminate precisely before the forward collision warning and emergency braking lights activate and commence engaging. Since then, I have noticed a loose sensation in the steering wheel and a diminished braking response. Also screen on dash will randomly shut down and will not allow me to check my vehicle systems or to kia connect.

Several times over the past 12 months, the car has applied emergency braking when a car approaches me from behind in the lane to my left. The dealer was not able to replicate the problem but I have captured it twice on my dash cam. I was only able to intentionally replicate the problem once on my own but it has happened 15-20 times. If I do not press the accelerator, the car will come to a stop without me pushing the brake. When the emergency brake is applied, the warning sound is heard in the car and the dash lights up with the emergency braking icon and emphasizes the left rear of the vehicle. I have been to the dealer twice for this issue. The first time they told me it was due to a faulty camera mount under recall. It was replaced but the issue continued. The second time they told me they decreased the sensitivity of some sensor. The issue continued.

Steering cupler failure.
While driving on 3 separate occasions the aeb engaged causing vehicle to stop completely in the middle of the roadway with nobody in front or on the side and im not too sure if anyone was behind. Vehicle was going 50mph on two occasions and 35mph on the third occasion. Took to dealership was told there is nothing they could do about it unless the vehicle is giving off code(s). Called the dealership again when incident occurred told me the same thing, finally when the third time it happened I contacted kia corporate made a case and now waiting for a call back. Very concerning safety issue that needs to be recalled.

The forward collision warning system and emergency braking were engaged when no forward object was present. Amount of times 2 driver side rear quarter panel falsely detected a car swerving into my lane and engaged an emergency maneuver to avoid collision even though there was no car there. Amount of times 1.
On March 14, 2024 at approximately 11:40, while driving on a private driveway, which had no other cars or pedestrians on or near it, my vehicle performed its own emergeny braking effort to bring the car to a stop. The standard kia emergency braking warking text displayed on the dashboard declaring the incident. However, no other vehicles or pedestrians were in hundreds of feet of the vehicle or presented a potential obstical that may be crossing in front of the vehcile. The car was traveling approximately 25 mph and came to a complete stop. It felt as though the engine had frozen and all the wheels locked.

Possible components/systems with issues: engine, suspension, electrical, emergency parking brake and auto hold, back-up camera, parking collison warning, et al been trying to get my vehicle issues resolved. I have not been able to enjoy nor use my vehicle. I've had numerous repeat service appointments. I feel unsafe using the vehicle. Issues have almost caused accidents. It is now at the dealership and I've been in a loaner vehicle almost 3 months. 1. Suspension problems: I had to drive at reduced speeds and avoid highway usage. Poor driveability and rough handling. Felt like tires would pop off. 2. Oil consumption: poor performance, reduced power and fuel economy. Check engine light came on. Dealership said I had no oil, history codes, and code for injector misfire. They cleared the codes, told me to come back if codes come back. Had me to do oil consumption tests every 1,000 miles which showed low oil levels. I had to restrict usage of my vehicle for the testing. They ultimately said someone did not properly do the testing and there was never an issue with oil consumption. I believe there was an issue. Check engine light keeps coming on. 3. Back-up camera was replaced for recall. New camera had issues causing inverted images, distorted views, and malfunctions with parking and blind spot sensors. Could not use camera. Took back to dealership multiple times, they checked and said they fixed it but it was not. 4. Emergency parking brake and auto hold malfunction: dashboard indicator for auto hold malfunction and messages for activation/deactivation of emergency brake/parking. Vehicle would stop abruptly while driving without notice. Almost caused several accidents. Auto hold would not function as designed so vehicle would keep moving when it was activated, however, the vehicle is not supposed to move when it is activated. Had to pull over, turn vehicle off and back on. Sometime it cleared, sometimes it didn't. Dealership could not replicate so had me record.

The contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. The contact stated that the electronic parking brake (epb) system had failed, causing the auto park, the electronic parking brake, the adaptive cruise control, and the automatic emergency braking system to become inoperable. Additionally, the contact stated that while making a turn from a complete stop, the parking brake engaged unintendedly, causing the rear brakes to activate, and the vehicle became immovable. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. A mobile independent mechanic diagnosed that the electronic parking brake (epb) system had failed and informed the contact that he could not repair the vehicle. The mechanic disabled the electronic parking brake (epb) system, and the vehicle operated as needed while driving; however, the electronic parking brake warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the electronic parking brake (epb) system had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The contact owns a 2018 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while approaching a stop, the brake pedal was depressed, and the driver noticed that the check automatic emergency braking (aeb) system and check lane departure warning system (ldws) warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer on three occasions, where it was diagnosed that the sensors needed to be replaced and the system cleared. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the a/c recharge and the contact was informed about unknown codes that were retrieved. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
1. Kia sold me the car with open recalls. And did not disclose this. 2. I’m still paying on it and they had to replace the motor on 01/31/23 recall. 3. They again sent the car home with an open recall sc212 because they didn’t have the part to remedy the recall. (brakes) 4. My brakes went out luckily in the parking lot. 5. Called kia customer service they gave me the run around hung up on me left me on hold 27 minutes first. But I finally spoke to a supervisor and they agreed to have it towed to mike shaw kia were I had purchased the car and who had done all maintenance and recall work. 6. Mile shaw called me and now wants 75. 00 to even look at my car. I have a11 yr old daughter and myself I have to take to school and work. This is a major recall I refuse to jeopardize my child’s life in this vehicle but I cannot afford to pay them anything plus the car payment insurance. And now I’m walking on top of all this.

Replaced engine 1/31/23 had open recall per 21v331was not repaired even though they wasn’t suppose to return vehicle according to recall. They said it would be safe to drive. Said they had no remedy to fix they would call me. Few days car stalls alternator was hanging had to replace. They didn’t replace properly. With in a month cars brakes were acting weird took in for diagnostic back brakes no remedy. Call kia still no parts for recall. Sept 11,23 was pulling off expressway during 5 o'clock traffic my brakes locked up I had no control. Towed to kia they wanted 75. To look at it then 2700. To fix the brakes. And stated I had no brake fluid. Which was just checked. They said recall did not cover the repairs neither the engine recall nor the brake, hecu, abs, stability control recall. I contacted kia they told me they would get back to me. As of oct. 31,23 they had not done any repairs or response from kia. So I traded my car back to kia so I would have a vehicle for school and work. I’ve tried to get reimbursement from kia. For rental car etc. And keep getting the run around. I have towing, rental, and repairs that they are refusing to reimburse me. I drove the recalled vehicle for 9 months and could have been killed myself, my daughter, as well as others. Kia could care less! I traded vehicle 10/31 the recall was cleared on my 2014 Sorento on 11/4 according to NHTSA. Gov 3 days they clear it so they could sell it. I m really disgusted with kia. I’m out thousands of dollars for their neglect. They couldn’t repair the recall for longer than 9 months for me . But as soon as I trade it to them it’s repaired or they are lying just so they can sell it. Just like when they sold it to me with 2 open recalls without telling me it had them. What do I need to do? suggestions? I do have more receipts and documents.
There was a recall listed online 9/2023 for heuc hydraulic electronic control unit. 23v652000. I called kia in September the day I saw and they said a letter would come out and part would be available for the recall soon. I waited. I called again in November 2023. Still no fix or letter. I called again in January then 4/2024 still no letter or part to remedy the problem. Im tired of waiting and very scared to drive my car. I’m hearing now that the part might not be available until July 2024??!? this is completely unacceptable. That is 11 months driving a car that could catch on fire??!? and obviously it was a problem long before the recall actually happened or else there wouldn’t have been a recall needed. A serious recall and no remedy?!? how many people have to die to make them fix the problem??!! I’m scared to drive my car. Scared to park it because a fire could happen even if you are not driving the car?! no one wants to buy my car since there is a recall and I couldn’t get what it is worth to me either now. This is a serious problem. Now I hear that fixing the fuse is only a bandaid that the real problem is being disguised because it is a more costly repair vs just a fuse. Brake fluid could leak and cause engine fire?! even an o-ring could leak and cause fire. O-rings can rot over time anyway. I can’t believe kia has gotten away with this and for this length of time! unbelievably scary. They said wait until you smell smoke or some light will come on? well my son has no sense of smell so I have to trust that some light will come on and give him enough time to get out in time? that is the remedy of this serious problem??? or go outside and find the car had caught on fire in my yard and then catches the house and all the neighbors houses on fire! how many lawsuits are just waiting??? is this just a numbers game to them??? how many cars have to blow up? how many lives lost?? how many houses catch on fire?!?? geez kia! fix this problem and don’t just bandaid it!.
In early June, my car went into limp mode. The two lines with a car between on the dash were blinking red. I notified kia, both roseville and folsom, but they seemed unconcerned since it seemingly corrected itself after restarting car and driving it. Since then, the car has had the ebrake engage while driving at least 6-7 times. After the 5th or 6th time, I reported to kia and after much back and forth they agreed it was a safety problem since it would cause my car to brake slowing it suddenly to about 1/2 of my traveling speed. The week of August 7th, they had it a week and said they couldn’t replicate the issue. They did do something pertaining to TSB sc252. I got it back on Aug 11th and on the 17th, it did it again when I was traveling about 35 mph causing my car to pull right. It is back in the shop again. On Aug 4th, it engaged, causing me to swerve into the lane to my right. I was in rush hour traffic. On July 28th, I was on the hwy 50 traveling approx 70-75mph, when it happened causing me to suddenly slow to 35 mph. It happened 3-4 times previously as well. The emergency brake lights up red and blinks a few times before it disengages. Kia refuses to acknowledge there’s an issue, but they’ve asked me to turn off driver assist and other safety features. It is random and I googled if anyone else had ever had the issue. I found on kia forum of someone that had a 2021 model that did the same thing. Kia customer care rep said it wasn’t a real kia site and the person was probably lying.
I was driving on a highway where maximum speed limit was 65miles. Suddenly my car stalled and restarted again and post that I had a warning for check aeb, auto hold was disabled and traction control was enabled. For a brief moment, I lost steering which may be a result of the stall but then I regained steering. This has happened 4 times in the last 6 months. I stopped the car by the road, turned off the engine and restarted the car. The dashboard still showed the same warnings. I again turned off the car, opened my drivers side door and closed it and then restarted the car. The warning signs went off and then there were no issues post that.
Screen turned off and then lights on dash started flashing. Abs, power steering, blind spot warning, tire monitoring failed. Battery light was flashing. Parking break light came on. Loss of power. Now it will not turn on.
I got a kia Sorento 2022 in may of 2022. I was very happy with the car but I noticed an issue with brakes within a few weeks. The brakes would feel as if it grind on the road when pushed down on a sudden stop. A little over 5 months and I was due for an oil change, I was informed there was a recall on the transmission system and it just needed to be updated, I was shocked I was not informed, nor did I see a recall online. I figured I would mention the brake issue. Upon getting the car back I was told the brake issue was due to "debris or pebbles found. " I was told to change the rotators/pads if it continued (the car was only 5 months old?) now the car drives strange. When shifting gears the car makes a loud clicking sound. When braking the car lunges forward and the car jerks. I do not feel safe in the car. It only has under 4000 miles. It is currently at the dealership for transmission diagnosis(notshiftingproperly, leaks, other).
I was driving down the highway and the car stalled out the lights dimmed and the car shut off luckily I was able to get over and stopped the steering wheel was locked up almost like the battery went out. I was able to put it in park and restart the car. I got off the highway at the next exit and went through town and about half way home I was sitting at a stop light and the car died again. I put it in park and started the car again I took it straight over to the dealership and they hooked into it and scanned the car they said they couldn't find anything it continues to happen and I keep asking the dealership about it but they can't recreate the problem. I have also almost been in several wrecks do to this problem. I have also had the car slam on the breaks going over 40 and say caution ?? and the breaks lock up for a few minutes.
The emergency break goes on even when I’m driving straight in the freeway with no cars close to me. It’s terrifying. Has occurred multiple times.
1) automatic braking: twice, car has auto braked in the middle of a 4-way intersection when a car was stopping at the light. Car has auto braked in the middle of the 3rd lane (fast lane) on the highway during rain. Car has auto braked multiple times when reversing out of a parking spot. In one of those incidents, I have to drive forward in order for the car to move; turning it off and on does not reset the vehicle. The auto-braking while driving especially on the highway causing rapid decceleration could result in another vehicle rear-ending me. 2) many transmission issues: jerky transmission, car moving backwards while in drive (usually uphill, doesn't have to be steep), car stalling in park or when going up steep hills, traction control kicking on and engine downshifting (even though the roads were dry).

1. Abs system- anti-lock braking system sensors goes out and not working correctly reading which creates safetly hazard in preventing possible collisions 2. Lighting-interior instrument panel-light dims and or goes out completely while driving which creates saftely hazard in vehicle operation. 3. Windshield wiper system and reservior defectives- wiper motor issues and leakage from faulty tubing and reservior leakage issues.
I have a problem with my kia Sorento since last year and I expensed a lot money with the eng8ne. The motor is broken down. Also, one shop gave me the receipt, 4 guys for $59 because I refuse any repair again. But, the other shop mechanic where I expensed a lot of money does not give me the receipt, inspire of my request they have not given me the receipt yet. I am so embarrassed, I expensed a lot $5500 for the repair. And, another shop too for $500. Thanks.

I purchased my kia Sorento in 2020. It was a used 2019 with 7,000 miles. I immediately noticed that it would squeak rather loud and bounce high when driving over very small humps on the roads. Being that I'm no mechanical savvy, I assumed this was normal for SUV's because I've driven sedans all my life. Anyways, I was informed of the issue when going to a tire repair shop asking why my back tires sounds so harsh when driving. I was told that there are waves in my tires due to the shocks. And that the shocks has had to have issues for a while to now change the formation of the tires. I have now read several kia forums and there are lots of kia Sorento owners who have suspension issues close or the same as mine. Another issue is the automatic emergency brake. I was unaware of this feature until one day having to make a sudden stop and the vehicle stopped and shut off on its own almost causing me to be hit in the rear. This event was very traumatizing. I googled this feature and thought that I had turned it off but I realize that I can't make it go away and it is a very dangerous feature to have. My vehicle does not have as much driving experience as I do and I am capable of controlling my vehicle to avoid an accident if I need to without the assistance of a computer which has almost caused nearly fatal accidents by immediate stops or shutting off the vehicle causing me to not be able to control the vehicle myself. Another defect is the powered trunk. Whether I open it from the button near the steering wheel or the button on the rear gate, the trunk will immediately close on its own after opening; sometimes closing down on the top of the head of my children or myself. I selected to disable the "Smart" feature but it does not stop it. The last defect is electrical. I have replaced the same internal light near the rear view mirror, and it continues to go out. This is an indication of an electrical issue and with my kia only having 54,000 miles, further action is needed.
I was driving and heard a knocking sound. I came to a stop sign and the car stalled. It restarted but had no power. I turned and tried to go a little further had no power. I managed to get the car off road and into the bypass lane. Car would not start again. I had to call for tow truck.
