Side/rear Glass Problems of Kia Motor Soul

Rear hatch glass shattered randomly out of no where. No impact to the glass or others around to cause it. Others safety was at risk due to glass falling off the car as I was driving. My safety was jeopardized due to when it happened as I was driving, I jumped and drove left of center.

The contact owns a 2014 kia Soul. The contact stated that after closing the driver door, the rear hatchback window shattered. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was unavailable.

Got in car 7:30 am, when I closed driver door, heard glass falling. Rear hatch window was shattered into a million pieces. Car was parked under a carport, no indication found of anything that might have hit the window. Car is parked quite a distance from the street. Rear driver door window was open about 1", so no pressure buildup. No grass cutting in the area, temperature 70's - 80's.

The first incident occurred while on my way to work last week, rock hit the windshield and broke the windshield. Today while driving to work, same thing. I was not tailgating, I was not following any big trucks. . . Nothing. I have been driving for 13 years and have not had this happen to me before. Coincidence? I think not. I think there is a default with the glass. I was driving the speed limit and driving as I always do, and twice in a week? unacceptable.

Traveling down highway 35 the front driver side window shattered. No apparent foreign object appears to have hit the glass, it just exploded into a thousand pieces.

2011 kia Soul with less than 100 miles had pebble hit driver side door window and chipped it in several spots. At 6,000 miles, pebble hits windsheild that chips and cracks windsheild. Safetylite could not repair and crack is growing. Also, front and sides of car paint is chipping at an alarming rate. Paint chiping is a gross quality issue. However, the substandard glass is a really gross safety issue and can result in injury and or death. There appears to be a pattern of these defects and should be throughly investigated.

The contact owns a 2010 kia Soul. The contact was driving 30 mph when the windshield was struck by a small rock causing extensive damage to the glass. The vehicle was taken to a glass specialist who advised the contact that the windshield would fracture again if struck and recommended replacing with tougher glass. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that they would have an engineer further examine the windshield glass. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 10,813.

I have had my kia Soul since may 2009. I have experienced chips in the glass and paint as well as scratches to the glass from a plastic ice scraper ai have used on 3 other vehicles without issue. I do not use ice scrapers often here in texas, but this is the first time I have had windows scratched by a plastic utensil designed for the task I was performing. I think the windows are made of a hybrid compound that is not fully glass to be so easily chipped and scratched. It reminds me of the polycarbonate used in the glasses I wear. They are "scratch resistant", but when push comes to shove I will have scratches from the most benign occurrences. I believe the glass in this vehicle will be a hazard over the long term by creating issues with viewing the road. The scratches catch the light and cause star effect lighting right in the portion of the windshield in front of the driver. This car has less than 5000 miles.

Factory installed windshield chips and cracks from the edge easily and often. I had the first window replaced at about 5,000 miles and that window was a genuine kia window installed and now it has two small chips and a crack from the edge of the glass and one big chip at 8,000 miles. I have not changed my driving and have never occurred this many window defects. I believe the window to be not properly annealed or treated in the furnace or it is just too thin.
