March 2021 complaint being filed for replacement 2014 engine (in July 2020) engine light has come on repeatedly in the last month when just driving around town. 1) oil was changed; light reset. 2) solenoid switch replaced; light reset. 3) leaking oil; valve cover secured 4) variable valve timing gear problem, timing is off causing oil pressure problems. Vehicle running rough, engine is audibly missing.

2 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2020

My car has a knocking sound in the engine. The oil has been changed on a regular basis. This car has been well taken care of. Also 2 of the windows will not work.

3 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2020

My car had been running perfectly, no engine lights or warnings, and then one day I drove to work and everything was fine, but when I left to go home that evening I heard a weird knocking noise that only got worse until I got home. I had it towed to my mechanic as soon as he had an opening, and after a lot of work he was finally able to find that the issue was spun rod bearings and that there were metal shards in my oil pan. After doing some research after finding this out I learned of the kia recall sc147, which was for this exact issue. I then contacted kia because my car did not show up on the warranty list on their website, and the customer service representative told me that my car was in fact not covered under this recall, even though it has the defect that they were recalling so many vehicles for.

5 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

Knocking noise coming from engine, have taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic as well as kia dealership service department both diagnosed the problem as needed a new engine ($5000-7,000). This vehicle 73,000 miles, oil changed at every 5000 miles. There is no explanation or reasonable cause of engine failure except for manufacturing. Only had the 1 1/2 years. Dealership told us only option is to buy a new car from.

6 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

1/1/2020 I was driving down the highway in the middle of nowhere kansas, hours from home. I had to stop for about 5 minutes because of a stretch of highway that was down to 1 lane for construction and had a temporary stoplight (instead of a pilot car). When it was finally my turn to go, my car started making a loud knocking sound, violently shaking, and wouldn't accelerate. Then all the warning lights and check engine lights turned on. I pulled over and called roadside assistance which towed me to the nearest mechanic. The mechanic said the engine was shot, the rods and stuff oroken, knocking a hole in the engine. I finally get it towed back home 1/3/2020 (hours away) and dropped off at the dealership. I finally hear back from the dealership 1/13/2020 and they confirm I need a new engine, but claim the current recall nor the manufacturer's warranty will cover the repairs (approximately 100,600 miles, only 600 miles over warranty). What I've read in my research of 3 recalls and about the class action lawsuit is exactly what has happened to my car's engine (except no fires thank goodness). I'm left with no car and no idea what to do.

7 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2019

Traveling on black Friday in 2019, the engine hickuped as we were passing a car. Within two miles, a loud knocking sound started, and within a mile, the car quit running. We had it towed to a local mechanic who said the engine was shot. We contacted kia with our VIN number, and they said the car was not covered under a recall of other kia models where the engine had died in the exact same fashion.

8 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2019

Knocking noise coming from engine, have taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic as well as kia dealership service department (franklin, TN), both diagnosed the problem as needed a new engine ($5000-7,000). This vehicle as 145,000 miles, oil changed at every 5000 miles. There is no explanation or reasonable cause of engine failure except for manufacturing.

9 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2019

On Sunday (11/3) I was driving my 2012 kia Sportage (a car we purchased used from kia of east hartford, CT and currently only has 68,000 miles on it) on a very busy interstate when the engine began to power down. I was barely able to make it to the shoulder of the road before the car seized up, a loud bang sounded from under the car, it began to smoke from underneath the car and oil covered the ground. The car was then towed to our local auto body shop where it was determined that the engine block suffered a quarter-sized hole from something being dispelled at a high rate of speed from the engine. When this was determined, we did some research and found there as a recall and we were never notified (see below). VIN #kndpbca20c7281822. We were told by the kia dealership that whatever caused our car to just stop working on the interstatewas not covered under the recall. It seems very suspect that given what exactly happened, this is not part of the recall. After much debate and over a month later still without a vehicle, kia has told us they will supply the parts but that we were still be responsible for the $3,000+ of labor. I'm sorry, but kia should stand behind their cars & engines. Again, we only have 68,000 miles on our car. We don't agree with the directive of having to pay the labor fees. We would like someone to review this complaint and provide some direction for us. I have tried on multiple occasions to talk to someone beyond the mechanic & first line rep, but have not received a response from anyone at kia. This is the case # 13421656 for kia. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. 615-243-7043. Thank you.

10 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

Vehicle engine light came one while driving, had loss of power and engine began to shake and had a loud knocking noise. Pulled over to side of road and had to have the vehicle towed to kia dealer. Upon evaluation I was notified that a new engine was required. Vehicle only has 63,964 miles and as a second owner, it is not a warranted item. Engine replacement estimate is $6390. 00 plus tax.

11 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2019

Purchased Dec. 2018 used. Drove 10k miles and no indication of a problem. Had a window motor repaired in July. Picked car up on Friday. On Monday, knocking sound started occurring in engine. On Tuesday, it was worse so drover straight to kia dealership. It lost power on a major highway so I got over to the right. Made it to the dealership exit but car died on a major street in front of dealership. Finally got it started and turned into parking lot. Two weeks later I was told it needed the engine replaced. There is only 106k miles on it. Bought for daughter that will start driving in September. Spent all my savings. They said 3900 plus labor for used motor or 6500 plus labor for new engine.

12 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Car only has 79,597 and I'm hearing knocking noises coming from under the hood. I have now received my recall in the mail.

13 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2019

With 88,110 miles on the car, while driving, the engine completely shut off. Upon stopping the car, and restarting the car, the car has a loud knocking noise. I took the car to the dealership and they said it needs a new engine, for $6800. After researching this issue, I have come to learn, it is very common among the 2012 kia Sportage.

14 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2019

The contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving 55 mph, all the instrument panel indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over, turned off and restarted the vehicle; however, the engine made a knocking noise. The vehicle traveled approximately ten more miles before shutting down. The vehicle could not be restarted and was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine jumped and bent the valves. The mechanic stated that the engine needed to be replaced and the contact was informed to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer advised the contact to tow the vehicle to dorsch Ford Lincoln kia (2641 eaton rd, green bay, WI 54311, (920) 469-3000). The manufacturer promised to reimburse the contact for the tow and the initial diagnostic test. The dealer verified that the engine needed to be replaced and wanted to charge the contact $9,100 for the repair. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v101000 (engine) and the dealer refused to pay for the towing, diagnostic testing, and repair. The failure mileage was 65,000.

15 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2019

Driving to work when the car made a sudden knocking noise then completely shut off. I was on a curve in a road and this was a dangerous place to be broken down. I had the car towed to kia gateway in warrington, PA. And was told the car had a catastrophic engine failure. There were no warning lights prior to this failure. I also have maintainted the car with proper oil changes and maintenance.

16 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. The contact heard an abnormal knocking noise without warning after returning from a trip more than 100 miles away. The contact notified phil long kia (1020 motor city dr, colorado springs, CO 80905, (719) 425-2770) and they diagnosed that the engine assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 19v101000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the failure was similar. The vehicle was also not included in NHTSA action number: rq17003 (engine). The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

17 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2019

As I was driving down the 57 fwy in so California with my wife I attempted to pass a vehicle who was traveling slower than the rest of the fwy (under 55mph). Upon doing so I started to hear a knocking noise. (per myself and my mechanic its toasted the rod bearing). Being a mechanic for 20 yrs I knew that sound wasnt good. I pulled on the shoulder to verify I had motor oil. After checking oil level was good. I continued to exit the fwy. My car only has 114k miles. How does the waterpump last longer than the motor. While waiting for a tow truck I started to google this issue. After what I read I called kia to only find out my car wasnt part of this recall. How is this possible? it is the same exact problem to which there is a recall. Car has been maintained regularly. To make matters worse we are moving out of state in 5 days. I would have never in a million years thought this car would blow the motor at 114k miles. Qhen the salesmen at the kia dealership wrote my credit score on a piece of paper 60 points lower than what it actually was I should have walked away. There needs to be another investigation/ class action lawsuit for all kia 2. 4 that throw a rod bearing at suck low miles. This only happens due to faulty parts at this low of milage. The only reason I bought a kia was they are were to be good cars. I will never buy one again. Ever.

18 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2019

While traveling in id heading home to ut (in motion) on an interstate interchange at hwy us-20 w to I-15 s, my 2012 kia Sportage with only 36,000 miles, experienced engine power loss, the engine seized with no warning indicators. I was eventually able to bring the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road, but it was difficult because there were no brakes. After waiting several minutes and calming down, I tried the ignition and it started up again and since there were no warning indicators and I'd never experienced this particular problem before, I decided to push on keeping to the right side of traffic and going as slow as possible. After a few minutes of driving slowly, the car started making a knocking sound so I exited immediately at the nearest pocatello exit, to find a kia dealership. Now the car was making an awful squealing noise along with the knocking. I was able to putter to the pocatello kia dealer and had to leave the car so they could run a diagnostic test the following Monday. I then had to find a ride back to salt lake. The result was "rod failure" according to the test and they recommended that I buy a motor for approx $7000 and did not disclose they could start a service ticket with the test result, so one week later a friend helped me trailer the kia back to salt lake, we left it at our family mechanic's shop whom we've used for other cars and started the search for a less expensive engine. Had a jegs engine shipped but jegs sent the wrong engine and now say there are no engines that will work for my kia. One month later I still have no car, no engine and am racking up rental car charges and it looks like my only option is to buy another car. Feeling a little violated because I took great care of that kia. I can provide documentation upon request, if you feel it would be helpful, please let me know.

19 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 30 mph, the oil pressure and temperature gauge indicators illuminated, and the vehicle made a knocking sound. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and had it towed to her residence. The contact called dick hannah kia (3400 ne auto mall dr, vancouver, wa 98662) and was informed that the vehicle exceeded the mileage to be repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

20 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2019

While driving down interstate the vehicle started making a awful knocking noise. Then the dash lit up with oil pressure light check engine light. I slowed down and pulled to side of interstate with my children in the car. I had to call someone to come get us.

21 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

I had been hearing a strange noise when pushing the brakes since August 2018, I had a lay person look at it who stated it was the wheel bearings and should be replaced. I took it to kia as I was still under warranty for 20 more miles and they said it wasn't the bearings and they could find no problems at all with the car. On Feb. 20, 2019, 6 months later, I was driving with my son on the highway and started to hear a loud knocking noise at the base of the windshield under the hood and the speedometer started to falter. I tried accelerating and the knocking increased and all the lights on the dash went on and the speedometer began falling. I hurried to get over and off the highway as the smoke and burning smell was engulfing the front of the car. It completely died as I rolled to a stop with smoke pouring from under the hood. I towed it to kia who said they would do a diagnostic for $145. The tow driver gave me a lemon sized chunk of metal stating it looked like a piece of the oil pan as the flatbed was covered in oil. I had to call kia the next day to get a diagnosis. They said they didn't do one because just from looking at the hole in the oil pan, they could tell it had blown an engine rod. I was informed that even though this was a recall event because my VIN was not recalled they would do nothing for me.

22 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

While driving the vehicle, the motor started to stall at highway speeds and making loud knocking noises. Once the vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder of the road the vehicle died and would not start. There was no sign of over heating or any other damage. No warning lights appeared until right before the motor died and only then the check engine light appeared. We had the vehicle towed to a local service shop and the technician and mechanic informed us that the motor would need to be replaced. He informed us that the same motor family was under recall from kia but only the gdi model not the mpi model, which this vehicle is. They also informed us that the diagnosis and issues are in both motors from the theta ii motor family in their experience. The vehicle currently has around 114,000 miles and has always been maintained and kept under recommended maintenance schedule.

23 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 70 mph, a knocking sound was present coming from the engine and the vehicle began to lose power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to kia of auburn (1687 s. College st, auburn, al) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 106,000.

24 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the bearings in the motor needed to be replaced. The mechanic also stated that NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) pertained to the failure, but the VIN was excluded. The vehicle was taken to bob king kia (1725 link rd, winston-salem, nc 27103) where it was diagnosed that the motor bearings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

At 100,000 miles, a knocking sound could be heard. The service department at the dealership indicated that the engine was faulty. I understand that there was a recall of the 2012 kia Sportage but my VIN number does not indicate that my vehicle was affected by this recall. Can you explain why my vehicle which is affected by the same engine failure is not covered?.

26 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2018

I was driving my car to work one morning and I heard a weird faint knocking sound coming from outside my car. I immediately drove straight to royal kia in tucson where I had purchased the car 4 years ago as a "certified" used car. At 3p that afternoon they called to tell me that it needs a new engine. It has 78000 miles on it. They claim my warrenty was "defaulted" on because over the past 4 years I was late getting the oil changed twice. I called corp kia and they basically said too bad and insinuated that because the late maintenance on the vehicle caused the engine to fail. I also spoke with tge gm of royal kia and he insisted the same thing. I have spoken to a number of mechanics and they said no way can that cause an engine to go with the low mileage. I have also had every service done on the car for 4 years. The only issue was the two late oil changes. I brought the recall up to the dealer and he said that it wasn't this engine. I say someone needs to investigate this further. They told me it would cost $7000 to replace the engine and that it really wasn't "worth it". There seem to be a lot of engine complaints on this website. Maybe another class action suit should be pursued.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2018

2012 Sportage lx with 75,560 miles on vehicle. I am not the primary owner but a secondary owner so kia says the 100,000 mile power train warranty does not apply to me. The engine began making a knocking sound on Sunday so I had it towed to round rock kia (n austin texas). Kia determined the cause of failure is a bad/worn connecting rod bearing which is the identical cause of failure as "recall 17v224000" | "kia's recall number "sc147". The recall impacts 2012 Sportage failing in identical ways but because my VIN is supposedly outside the recall pool they are saying it's not covered and wanting me to pay 4,200 for a new engine block. The details of the recall even mention the engine rod "during machining of the engine crankshaft and crankpins, metal shavings may have been left within the crankshaft oil passages, and the crankpins themselves may be too rough on the edges. As a result, oil may be blocked and cause the connecting rod bearings to wear, which would then cause them to fail and seize the whole engine. ".

28 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2018

While driving down a city road at approx. 45 mph, car suddenly began sputtering and making a loud knocking noise in the engine and seems to be losing power and feels very unsafe to drive. Engine light comes on and goes off and comes back on.

29 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

My 2012 kia Sportage lx 2. 4l (109,000 miles) started making a knocking noise while driving earlier this week. I took it in for my local mechanic to examine it. They said the noise is coming from inside the engine, and it is a sign of internal engine failure. I started searching online and found all the information about the engine recall of various kia's, but my trim is not included in the safety recall. My car is showing the same signs, and yet I cannot get it fixed. The cost of the new/used engine would be more than the total worth of the car.

30 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

Our kia 2012 Sportage began to suddenly make knocking noise while driving on the high way . Reviewing information I expect the worst . New motor!!!!.

31 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2018

Vehicle began to suddenly make knocking noises while driving on the highway. Driver was able to make it short distance home before engine completely seized. Towed to kia dealership who confirmed the engine had seized (pistons became completely stuck and unable to move). Service manager said only fix is to replace the motor,.

32 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2018

Our kia 2012 Sportage engine failed while we were driving on interstate 95 on March 10 2018. We had never had an engine warning light come on ever until the engine seized going 65 mph. Heard a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My VIN does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic. The engine failure is the exact description of all the other engine failures. ***** called kia and they said that our VIN did not match their recall. And too bad for us. **** we have been in a quandry about how to deal with this. We spoke to our Hyundai service advisor (we have owned a Hyundai for 10 years with no problems) and he said that we should definitely pursue this further with kia. Do you have any advice on who to deal with on this? we have no idea where to start. I do appreciate your time and any advice you might have.

33 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

Driving at 50 mph down highway, hear a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My VIN does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic.

34 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2017

As I pulled out of my driveway and began accelerating, my car began making a loud knocking noise in the front end. After pulling over and verifying the noise was coming from the motor, I took the car to my mechanic. He pulled the oil filter and cut it open. Confirming there were metal shavings in the oil filter. After calling our local kia dealership, they confirmed there was a recall for the 2012 kia Sportages, but continued to tell me my VIN was not included in said recall. (I purchase my car used, after a one year lease, so the warranty was void for me. ) I am confused as to why my issue was "verified" to be the same issue as the recall, but my engine (2. 4 l vs. 2. 0 l) was not included?!?!?! something is not right. Now I am stuck with money remaining on my loan and a very large paperweight. (approximate mileage at the time of issue 79,000).

35 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2017

Vehicle is equipped with 2. 4l mpi engine, 140,000 kilometers, meticulously maintained with regular oil changes with premium synthetic oil and filters, spark plug change, etc. Engine always made some light knocking sound but assumed it was the injectors, no lights or errors ever came on and service techs never said anything and forums mentioned noisy injectors so assumed it was normal. A few days ago I was on my home ascending a regular hill in the residential area when an unusually loud knocking noise began and engine began to struggle. It was late at night, and 5 minutes away from home so I was hoping I could at least make it home to bed and get it towed to the shop in the morning but as I approached the top of the hill the engine completely shut down causing abrupt deceleration and the vehicle began to roll back down in reverse quite rapidly and was very difficult to slow it to a safe stop since the brakes stiffen up without vacuum from the running engine on top of being startled from the event and slightly panicking from the surprise. Luckily enough it was at night and there was no traffic or pedestrians behind or near me but still was frightening enough. I was able to barely control the speed of the car down the hill in reverse with no power steering and brakes stiffened up and the emergency brake was not strong enough at that incline. I was able to move the car off the main street to a side street and attempted to start the vehicle several times hoping it was either a fuel problem or electrical. With no avail, I called tow company, waited for an hour in the cold at midnight, nothing worked, just clicking, towed it to the dealership and took a cab home. Got news from dealer that engine was infact seized and quote to replace engine is $8500 plus labor.
