4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/03/2017

I have reported this to kia on the dealership level twice and their corporate offices once. I have gas that bubbles up and out of the gas tank. The first time it happened I had the car for about a week. It has been over a year and I still have the problem. It doesn't matter what time of the day, or season, or gas station I use. I have taken it to two dealers, both kia. They have not fixed the problem and don't seem to think it is a safety issue. The most recent event was this past Friday.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 12/15/2016

Bought this vehicle with only 11k miles from an elderly couple that hardly drove it. Now at 21k miles, there is a gas smell coming inside the vehicle and also outside of the vehicle. Has a rough idle and gas spews out of tank while I'm pumping gas. The front passenger tire sounds like it's about to fall off. Had to replace spark plugs twice already. Also, the driverside seatbelt will not retract. I bought this vehicle with only 11k miles thinking it will last for awhile, but I've had so many issues with it.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

I bought a car last week from a private seller, and it has a gas leak coming from the gas tank area. I have not taken it in yet to a mechanic to have it checked out. The seller had replaced the filler hose, and had said the previous owner had replaced the gas tank, so he said there shouldn't have been any issues. I have two grandchildren that need to be able to ride safely in this car, and I refuse to drive it with this leak on there. From the other reports that I am reading, this is a major issue, along with the rusted frame on the car. Kia should not be allowed to continue to sell cars without fixing these other major issues.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/07/2014

Just purchased this vehicle from a private owner, they smelled an odor of fuel ever since they acquired the vehicle a month ago. Prior to that it was owned by one owner and garage kept. The fuel tank and bottom protector was rotted away and in dangerous leaking condition. Kia was contacted and they said there were no recall and they wouldn't repair the vehicle. The rot in this tank didn't happen overnight, but it was so severe that it warrants a look from the NHTSA into this. A manufacturer such as kia should not be able to sell an inferior safety hazard to the citizens of the USA. There were investigations into this problem a full 7 years ago and nothing was done. This is an insult to people concerned with motoring safety, we should expect better from both the manufacturer and government agencies such as this one. It's not a mileage issue, the 1999/2000 Sportages were rusting out with only a few years of service and it is due to inferior materials that should be covered by a manufacturer that uses them.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 03/26/2014

While driving down highway when approximatly at 55mph engine will stall. Slow down and stop without warning. Most of the time I can turn engine off restart run it thru all of the gears and it will be fine for awhile unless on bumpy road or stop warning bumps in the road. I can not fill gas tank up due to it leaking out under vehicle refrase that pour out. It will also viberate really bad after being drove for over 2 hours straight. Please help me to resolve these problems before it causes a injury or death.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 03/13/2014

I had just filled gas tank with unleaded gas. When I noticed a strong gas smell. The car sits all day. I only move it for emissions each year I work from home. They tested and told me evap emission control sys malf. The guy said he could see gas leaking from my fuel line. He said it was a recall on this to check with kia. Kia told me my VIN number did not match the recall. This car does not see alot of action there is no reason other than a few good snows that may have rusted the tank other wise why would my tank all of a sudden leak gas. This is a hazard that I think kia should be responsible for. I am the second owner of the car and have had it longer than the first. I have experienced first hand some issues this model has had which kia took care of. But they refuse this.

Gas tank is leaking gasoline.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/17/2012

I took my vehicle to a shop to get the oil changed and they noticed that the driver side rear of the frame is severely rusted out and needs replacement. Also the fuel tank is leaking at one of the seams in the corner of the tank. I have been told by people in the auto industry that this is a common problem with the kia Sportage. I have also seen numerous reports on the internet as well. It's only a 12 year old vehicle. I have had plenty of other vehicles much older without all of this kind of rust issue. This is ridiculous. Obviously there is some kind of defect with the materials being used. I surely hope the NHTSA will make Kia Motors recall these vehicles. Because it is a major safety hazard.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/20/2012

The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. The contact stated that the fuel tank was corroded causing a fuel leak . The contact mentioned that fuel fumes were emitted around the vehicle. 20 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/27/2012

(1) noticed that the fuel tank shield is severely rotted out and is barely connected. (2) smell fuel vapors periodically while in the vehicle. (3) fuel tank appears to be rusting, afraid to mess with tank in fear of disturbing the rust and rupturing a hole in tank. (4) brake lines were so severely rusted in one area that it blew a hole in the line and prevented the vehicle from stopping and required the prompt action for repair. Other brake lines look like they may fail in near future. (5) steel portion of power steering line rusted out and blew fluid everywhere preventing the ability to turn the wheel while driving. (6) the frame has heavy rust scale and appears to be rotting in several place. (7) paint is starting to bubble which is indicating body is rusting under paint job. This is a 12 year old vehicle with very bad rotting of metal from salt corrosion. Have never seen this much rust on 20+ old vehicles that are in the same northern regions of the us.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 06/13/2012

The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. While parked, the contact noticed an overpowering fuel smell. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed a fuel leak coming from under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician stated that the fuel tank would have to be replaced due to corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/27/2011

I have a 2001 kia Sportage, with a faulty sending unit seal. The seal leaked, causing fuel to run down the side of the tank and rust a hole into the tank causing a second leak. The sending unit and the pressure regulator and the gas tank are all sold separately. The shield around the tank causes fluid to trap between the tank and the shield, which is where it rusted. The shield is another expense. Kia will honor nothing. I fear for my life to drive it the way it is. It will cost around $600-800 in parts alone.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/17/2011

As is it happening with the 2002, and 2005 models, my 2001 kia Sportage also has problem when I put gas in. When I try to fill it up, it spits the gasoline out with so much force it gets all over the floor and if you are not careful, it gets on you. This is been happening about a year or so ago. It is a very dangerous situation because when you least expect it the gasoline you put in the tank goes back out. I took it to the local mechanic and told me there was a defective valve inside the tank and it was a very expensive job. I check but there are no kia recalls. I think there should be some enforcement from the government against kia so they fix this problem which is dangerous not only to the owner's health, but to the environment and his pocket too.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/22/2010

When it is cold (winter season) when fueling my tank it spills out, making it hard to fill tank. This has been happening ever since I have had the vehicle, which was oct of 2010. Yesterday (thurs) when fueling it would not let me put hardly any gas in with out spilling out. I don't know exact date this was noticed by me but it was in winter, this happens every cold season.
