Other Fuel System Problems of Kia Motor Sportage - part 1

I leased my 2020 kia Sportage lx in August 2019 and purchased the vehicle after the lease. In April 2025, the vehicle started emitting a strong gas smell after filling. Often, the pump would stop short around 8-10 gals instead of the usual 13-14 gals. I attributed both to perhaps cheap gas and faulty pumps. On September 23, 2025, I went to the dealership to check the gas odor and possible gas leakage and ticking engine noise. I ended up having to replace the entire fuel tank. The car is now 6 years old and, of course, out of its 5-year warranty. The report indicates that the leak was from the top of the tank and in the cabin; therefore, nothing was caused by normal wear or damage. Upon searching, I found that in January of 2019, previous years were recalled to replace the fuel tank due to similar issues (gas tank recall # sc172). Some of these models had recalls for the ksds as well, and my vehicle had been recalled and repaired. My concern is that this is my 3rd kia and 6th car total in life. Never have I had to replace a gas tank. I firmly believe some of these 2020 vehicles were built at the end of 2018 with the same parts in the 2019 recall; however were missed due to recall time and manufacturing rollouts.

In 2018 my I was driving home when it just shut off and wouldn’t start. Smelled like burning and had it towed to my house and had several mechanics look at it and couldn’t find the problem then as it was parked on day it started to smoke and the engine was burning I put out the fire and then a couple months later I got the recall information the car was a total loss and could t be repaired and no compemsation was sent to me. Ive contacted the class action suit and they were very vague with the information. I waited and the car eventually disappeared in which I thought the kia company picked it up. I still have t hear word from anyone and my car is no where to be found and I would like to be reimbursed for the car since it was paid off.

My four month old kia Sportage suddenly lunged forward two times. Sudden acceleration incident. [xxx].

I have a 2025 kiasportage hybrid that I loved due to all its safety features. Yesterday I was pulling into a parking space when my car lunged forward two times making very loud sounds. I was near a brick pillar it it tore off the right front of my car. The bricks were damaged. When I came home I looked up kia Sportage lunching problems. There are many to read. They talk about “sudden acceleration’” and that is exactly what happened. It just lunged forward. Thankfully a human was not on the sidewalk. It went up over the curb and on the sidewalk. It’s called a jerking car in articles. Even if my car is fixable I won’t trust it. If this problem is fixable, why isn’t it fixed before selling the car to consumers. I’m quite distraught about this event. Warning must go out to consumers. I called a collision center this morning and they have seen this before. On the cars connect website, it tells of this event on 2020 kia Sportage. It says ‘’violent, scared the heck out of me. ” so, what is happening and why hasn’t it been fixed? My car has the same issues as the kia soul and kia sorento. Kia has issued recalls for certain soul and sorento models due to various issues. A significant recall involves the 2020-2021 soul and 2021 seltos with 2. 0l nu mpi engines, where the piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, potentially leading to engine damage and even fires. Additionally, some 2021-2022 sorento and 2021-2023 k5 models have been recalled due to a potential loss of drive power caused by a faulty transmission oil pump. I purchased my car within the same time frame between 2020 - 2021 as well. Many mechanics have also told me the fast oil burn issue has been happening to a lot of kia Sportages as well. I have also been told by kia dealership they have stopped selling my particular model for a while now as well. My engine is having issues, and the air in my car is also not working as well. Please help assist in this concern of mine and the issue that is very relevent and related to the kia soul and kia sorento. Thank you!.

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, I was leaving work and was exiting i97 to enter on 695 and and I accelerated to proceed on 695 and my vehicle lost power, the engine light along with the oil indictor came on, and making a loud knocking sound. The vehicle was towed and taken to the mechanic and the code read, "knock sensor. " the knock sensor was replaced at $301. 85. I was able to drive the vehicle without any problems until Wednesday, June 3, 2025, when going to a doctor's appointment the vehicle's engine came on along with the oil indicator and the power was reduced and I had to pull over again with the same experience. The vehicle was again tested for codes and it then read camshaft sensor. This vehicle did not have any ill-performance, bells, dings, whistles or indicator lights until it was actually happening. According to the certified mechanic, this is a defect in the vehicle and although the part may be warranted, it will happen again and buyers will still have to pay for the part and labor, again, to have it fixed. I do not have my invoice on hand, however, I can get another copy.

While driving, the vehicle engine shut off while making a turn. Before the engine stalled, the engine began to sputter as I made the turn. I was stranded on the roadway as I could not restart the vehicle. For my safety, I stayed in the vehicle as there was no shoulder and many vehicles including dump trucks. Several attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful - the engine would try to turn over and then stop. I contacted roadside assistance and the car was towed to the dealership. Diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump/bad connectors. Approximately 8950 miles. This is the second time the car stalled while driving.

The car continues to burn oil and have to put oil in it although not time for oil change. I took the vehicle to dealership several times because whenever I get gas it won’t let me start it right away or stutters after getting gas. Whenever the car is in park or idle it’s making a knocking noise and shaking really bad. The check engine light keeps going off and on but this most recent time it is not on. Initially I was advised they could only diagnose when check engine light on but that’s the issue because light does not stay on. I was on the freeway going about 70mph the car started declining in speed so had to hurry and pull over. Pulled over and turned off the car then it took several times to start back up. Vehicle currently at dealership waiting for more info but said it’s something related to the engine misfire.

I own a 2017 kia Sportage, and I recently experienced a malfunction indicator engine light turning on. Upon diagnosis by kia russ darrow at odana rd madison, WI , the vehicle displayed dtc p001000 – ‘a (intake)’ camshaft position actuator circuit (bank 1). They have noticed oil leakage around the e-cvvt motor plug area. It pointed to camshaft position sensor malfunction and kia service say what the vehicle needs is a cvvt cover and seals/gaskets relating to the variable valve timing on the camshaft as it’s throwing the camshaft sensor circuit “high” voltage kia has issued technical service bulletin (TSB) sa305, which acknowledges a similar problem in earlier production models of the same vehicle (built from December 10, 2015 – September 12, 2016). However, my vehicle was manufactured in January 2017, and kia has not yet included it in the affected range. Despite this, I am experiencing the exact same issue outlined in the TSB. This failure poses a potential safety risk because it can affect engine performance and reliability. If left unaddressed, it could lead to unexpected engine stalling, loss of power while driving, or further engine damage, creating a hazardous situation. I have not yet received confirmation from kia regarding an official recall or warranty extension for my vehicle, but the symptoms are identical to those covered under sa305. The issue has been reproduced and confirmed by a mechanic, and I am currently in the process of contacting kia for further inspection and assistance. There were no prior warning messages, aside from the check engine light (mil) illuminating when the problem first occurred. This complaint is being submitted to request an investigation into whether this defect extends beyond the current TSB range and to determine if additional 2017 Sportage models should be included in a service action or recall to prevent safety risks. Vehicle was throwing codes p2196 O2 sensor stuck rich, p0290 post catalyst fuel trim lean, p01720 system too rich, p016b closed loop air/fuel ratio control at limit. Brought to local dealership where they did an inspection and could not find any major issue that, in their words, “would affect drivability”. Recommended I start using premium fuel and in the future consider a fuel system cleaning. 9 days later while driving my engine starting knocking, check engine light was on and flashing, then my car died. Towed vehicle to the dealership where the assessed and found there to be no compression and stated the pistons looked “melted”. They could not give me a reason as to why, or why none of this was caught at my $100 service inspection 9 days prior. They stated I needed an engine replacement at $6700 due to failed pistons. They would not do any type of diagnostic or testing to rule out a known issue with the theta ii engine recall. They stated they did not have to do any further diagnostic since they found my pistons to be melted. Local mechanic of mine not affiliated with the dealership, assessed the engine and components, stated he did not see any abnormalities outside of normal wear and tear but did recommend I have the dealership tear into the engine since they are “kia experts” and know the engines. Kia dealership stated they filed a claim with corporate and it was denied. Kia corporate stated my dealership sent report stating engine failure reason is outside of scope for recall. Kia dealership refused providing me denial in writing. Sent me photo of correspondence with tech line which was a total of 3 messages. Vehicle had been at dealership since November 16th.

My 2023 kia Sportage hybrid, with only 22,000 miles, has been experiencing a recurring "check hybrid system stop safely" error, causing sudden and complete loss of acceleration while driving. This issue first occurred in November 2024, while I was driving at highway speeds (60 mph), and has recurred multiple times since. The sudden loss of power puts my safety and others’ at serious risk by leaving the vehicle stranded in traffic, increasing the chance of accidents. On December 30, 2024, I brought the car to kia of west nyack for diagnosis and repair, providing video evidence of the error. However, the dealership claims they cannot replicate the issue and has not completed any repairs. While the dealership has stated since last week that a techline case was opened, kia corporate confirmed no such case exists, highlighting a lack of accountability and coordination. For over two weeks, no progress has been made, and the issue has not been escalated to a specialist. Despite being under warranty, I have not been offered a loaner vehicle, significantly impacting my daily life, work, and family responsibilities. This issue is further complicated by kia’s inability to log intermittent errors, as the "check hybrid system stop safely" message disappears when the car is restarted. This design flaw has allowed the dealership to dismiss the error as unreproducible, despite video evidence provided. This situation has left me questioning whether my car is safe to drive and when it will be repaired. This defect is not isolated to my vehicle. Many other kia and Hyundai hybrid owners have reported the same error, highlighting a widespread safety issue. Despite its warranty obligations, kia has failed to act promptly to address this defect. Immediate action is needed to ensure the safety of this vehicle and others affected by this recurring problem.

On October 27th my 5 year old daughter and I were driving home just after leaving tiresplus getting four brand new tires and an oil change. On the way home out of no where my vehicle caught fire. Driving down the highway, once noticing the car was on fire, no warning no nothing- until I hit the breaks which did not work cause they were completely burnt. Within moments of thinking how I am going to get to my child in her car seat and save myself I went into the median of the highway thinking grass would slow me down. Once the car was going about 30 mph I opened my driver door fearing we would be locked in the burning vehicle. As soon as I opened my door my legs were burning, I unbuckled my seat belt and jumped out of the car. Only to get up and chase the vehicle to get my 5 year old out. The car was fully engolfed in flames when approaching the vehicle thinking my daughter was dead. By the grace of god she unbuckled her self, climbed through the center counsel out the driver door and jumped into my arms! we were down to seconds of dying. Breaks didn’t work, nothing told me the car was hot, the trauma we endured. No one has taken responsibility for this and it’s frustrating that I owe money on the vehicle with full coverage and gap insurance still.

Vehicle was pushed off the road and roadside assistance was contacted and car tower to the dealership. Diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump. <900 miles.

I had my vehicle take to coughlin kia in dublin ohio on 04/10/24 and got my vehicle back on 04/15/24. The service center at coughlin claimed I had bad gas, they took it upon themselves to approve services I did not approve of. When I got my vehicle back on 04/15 I found wires under my hood and caps left under my hood as well. Then on 4/26/24 my vehicle started having problems, my vehicle would have the rpms jumping from 500 to 1,000 while sitting in park and driving. Not once did I ever mess with my vehicle under the hood. I notice this problem getting worse as the days went on. On 4/23 my vehicle wasn't getting any better, the engine was shaking while sitting in park and it was shaking the whole car. On 4/25 on my way back from a lunch break my car stalled out and stopped in the middle of traffic. I called great lakes dealership in columbus ohio, and have my vehicle taken there. My vehicle declined in speed while moving on a high speed highway. Putting my safety and my families safety at risk. Kia won't own up to any mistakes, they claim this as bad fuel and I have been putting high octane gas in my vehicle. I do believe my vehicle was messed with by someone at the coughlin dealership and now I'm facing safety issues I can't drive my vehicle because its unsafe and my vehicle has only 23,600 miles on it. I'm highly disappointed I reached out to the director of operations michele cameron and she refuses to respond back to me and return my phone calls. I can't get anyone from kia corporation to respond back to me. I was told by kia connect that they wouldn't provide me a tow truck last night when my vehicle was on the side of a busy highway. I have warranty on my vehicle and I get free tow's and was told they couldn't provide one. No safety vehicle would sit with us on the highway to make sure we were safe.

I bought a vehicle from a dealership in 2021. The dealership sold me a 2018 kia Sportage. To their knowledge, they state they were unaware of any safety recalls. However, fast-forward to March 18th 2024. As I was entering a busy street (with my two young children in the car (both under the age of 5) and going up a hill, the oil light flashed once and then stayed on, I noticed the vehicle decelerating, as I tried to pull over, making way for vehicles to go around, all three (oil, battery and check engine) lights appear in my dashboard. After one failed attempt of restarting vehicle, I knew I needed to call a tow truck. Thankfully my mom wasn't too long to execute the rescue (it was about 32 outside). The vehicle was towed to the dealership I had purchased it from (not a certified kia dealership mind you). I was told later on that day, that it was a good possibility my engine has blown. I was told the service technician had put over 3. 5 qtrs. In order for it to register on the dipstick. I was also told they could replace said engine for a whopping $10,000. Which, the vehicle is only worth $2,000 more than the cost of the motor replacement. I decided to have the vehicle towed to a certified kia dealership. Where, alas, the engine was in fact, blown. However, per the service manager, the blown engine was due to a recall (pi1802) which was in effect as of 1/19/19 (before I bought said vehicle). Per the service manager a vehicle should not be sold with an active safety recall. I then relayed that information to the gentleman who said the vehicle and was told it was illegal for them to work on a vehicle that they are not certified to service (although I had the option for them to replace the engine). I then begin the battle of who is responsible. And ultimately told by the manager of dealership, 70% of the used vehicles they sell have active safety recalls that they do not fix. Nor do they send them to be serviced and checked by the appropriate personnel.

My daughter has a 2013 kia sporage. Last week she was driving and the engine kept cutting off on the highway. She has had the recalled engine replaced last year and has 33,000 miles on it. When we took it to be checked out the guy said it could be the timing chain. The dealership said that was unlikely. It sounds like it’s not getting gas, so we put fuel injector cleaner in and it still isn’t running.

It happened after the 1st oil change from kia dealership, the car itself is phev so while driving on electric there is no smell on it but right after switching over to engine gasoline hev only. The interior & exterior smell with heavily burned gasoline. The smell has been complained by my wife and parents. Specially I have a 11 months old baby. Not sure what will cause in the future but it makes them dizziness from the gasoline burning from engine to the inside of cabinet. My entire garage now smells withe burned gasoline and its very hard to go away. Everytime I drive with hev mode it smells bad, very bad. I've called to schedule a check up on the car on Feb 14 but not sure if is common issue with this type of phev cars.

Car wouldn’t accelerate, could be problem if turning left into traffic. Trip to florida, 1000 miles, the engine accelerated by itself, one time the mph was into the 90’s before I got it under control. This happened 3 times on my drive florida from indiana.

Driving as usual and all of a sudden no acceleration. No warning lights at all. Started smoking. Towed to flynn’s. They said there is a known oil consumption issue and the motor locked up. Communicated with kia and they say to have it looked at - at a cost. Said it’s not under warranty. But is a likely know issue!.

Leased new kia Sportage on 1/1/22 went in for oil change on 11/11/22 3 hrs later told a "forced" update "burned" out the computer and car was not driveable on 11/30/22 was driving to work on li expressway, car shut down without warning while I was driving, smelled something burning, called 911, car towed to dealer. Told it was defective fuel injector. 1/29/23 I reported brakes grinding and vibration sound coming from engine, rpm's rev up but car doesn't accelerate. Brakes needed to be cut. Was told since there was no "code" nothing could be done about engine sound/rpm increasing. Car was in for service 3 times because of this issue. 9/10/23 car shut down while I was driving without warning and gas smell in car was nauseating. Car would briefly start & shut down. Car towed to dealer. I have reached out to kia corporate numerous times expressing I am afraid to drive the car, the car is dangerous and my life and the lives of others at risk. When car shuts down, ther is no warning, it just stops. I have had nightmares and lost sleep. I travel on highways & busy roads everyday. Kia wanted me to sign waiver releasing them of everything in lieu of 3 months lease payments. Expressed my life & lives of others are worth more than 3 payments. Car has had 2 recalls on top of these issues. I have reached out for help and have been ignored. 9/12/23 told by kia corporate it would take 2 weeks to escalate my complaint. Car is currently at dealership. Please help!.

The engine light came on and it started making loud noise, then the car started pulling on its own and it stop in the middle of the road. My safety issue was I had to keep my driver hood open so other visible drivers could know my car had an issue. Later on, that day I took my car to the mechanic and the mechanic said I have an oil leak and that's why my car started acting like that. The mechanic told me my car was ready to go, so I paid him and left thinking my car was fine. I drive 6 miles away from the car shop and my car broke down in the middle of the road. So, I had to call the tow truck people to tow my car until I could really find out what's wrong with my car.

Fuel reading is inaccurate. Range miles drop drastically while traveling. Vehicle says it’s is out of fuels when there is more than a half a tax. Fuel range miles go from 313 miles while vehicle is off to 417 without refueling. Then drop about 40 range mile during a short 5 or less mile commute. This is all happening while vehicle is traveling is electric mode. Multiple times the vehicles dash display said I was out of gas, but when I went to refuel, there’s more than a half a tank. From doing a little online research seems like this is not a isolated incident and many others are having this problem.

My engine is making noise, I have to add oil everyday and there are no leaks under my car. The engine gets hot, I feel like it can catch fire.

This is a new vehicle with only 1200 miles on it. I was told by gunther kia in ft. Lauderdale that my car could be serviced at any kia dealership. The car has developed a fuel injection problem. When in heavy traffic with a lot of stop/go, the fuel injection does not seem able to keep up with the aceleration and deceleration required. The car hesitates. As the trip progresses the hesitation progresses. I was trying to enter traffic on the interstate and nearly had a collision because the car would not accelerate quick enough.

First owner 2017 kia Sportage sx (note sx specifically) awd 2. 0l turbo gas direct injection (4-cyl engine) (no recalls found) - excessive oil consumption since early/mid 2023 and continues still today, Feb 19, 2014. We lose over 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles, did not discover this until an oil change in early 2023 how low our oil was. No leaks then, no leaks now, oil maintenance performed, we have meticulous records and have been to the #1 cochran robinson township kia dealership where they have perform kias required oil consumption test that we've paid for. 1st set of test failed each time, dealership performed deep clean, and since there was only 3/4 quart loss, kia had no further responsibilities. Too busy with our small business over the holidays, started oil consumption test, again feburary 16 2024. Every single time we hit 1,000 miles (monthly) we are down over 1+ quarts of oil, with no leaks anywhere. Added 40 ounces of oil (I have photos) a few days before we decided to get the oil consumption test again. Pls note: there are quite a few models and engines listed in recalls or perhaps lawsuits for excessive oil consumption, our sx model 2. 0l turbo gas direct injection (4 cyl) specifically is not. Over the past 7 months, we have lost over 8 quarts of oil, and have had 2 maintenance oil changes in between, part of normal maintenance. Looking online there are thousands of posts regarding kia excessive oil consumption, kia states losing 1 quart every 1,000 miles is acceptable? how can this not cause a hazard to us drivers, engine could blow due to oil going somewhere or into the environment, etc? if you require all of the service records for the oil changes, etc. I have them all. Please answer these questions using my words what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I was unable to accelerate the gas pedal after the car started bouncing up and down and smelling mid driving. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was on a major road at the time this occurred. Thankfully the time of day was in my side. If this was a few hours later there would have been a collision as I was in a main lane and had to veer to a turning lane. I am frightened every time I’m in the car now. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealer ship has confirmed. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no just the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, the warning came on after it happened.

Low oil indicator light came on at 15k miles. Tried to lock doors with key fob but could not. Had to open doors using key after popping off door handle. Put key in ignition but when turning car off and taking key out of ignition vehicle kept running and did not turn off for 15 minutes. Finally turned off on its own. Had vehicle towed by kia to kia of groton CT.

On the morning of may 16 2023 while making a turn at 17 th avenue and bayshore drive my car continued to accelerate in spite of me trying to brake. I was projected into a stone wall and knew I was going to crash . I crashed into the wall,all my airbags were deployed and the car smelled like smoke. My accelerator got stuck and was sideways . I was unable to get out of the car from inside but a good samaritan had opened the door from the outside and I crawled under the airbags and got out . The car did not go on fire but was still on when I was able to then turn it off . Police were called and I was checked at the hospital .

This is a heads up, not an incident report. On this vehicle there is a push button starter on the center console. Page 6-11 of the owner’s manual has a warning that reads, “never press the engine start/stop button while the vehicle is in motion. This would result in loss of directional control and braking function, which could cause an accident. ” I feel this is a hazard with an easy fix: disable the start button if the vehicle is in motion. A toddler could reach over and press the button for fun. A person could drop an object on it accidentally. I’m sure there are other scenarios where that button gets pushed inadvertently. Thank you.

My check engine light came on several monthsago. I replaced the gas cap three times! this did not seem to remedy the problem. The check engine light would come on shortly thereafter. I've been parking my car away from buildings and home and I have noticed that the grassy area where I park has died on the left hand side (the driver side) where I park. There must be a leak. I can hear gurgling from the gas tank! there is a a ping sound shortly after I shut off the vehicle. I'm very worried that my car is going to catch fire! you can hear gurgling (soon after engine is running) I have had the oil changed and asked if they could look at the undercarriage to see if there was anything unusual going on they did not see anything. Also, the throat of the fuel tank keeps getting rusty. The outter entrance always gets grimy. I guess water and or rain must be leaking down into the entrance. I have never owned a car where I had to continuously maintain the gas fuel tank entrance area! in summary, there are three problems. An emissions problem related to the fuel tank gurgglng and leaking fuel. Second, the throat of the fuel tank keeps rusting. Three, the entrance of the fuel tank. It's always dirty, and grimy as if something has leaked inside! it needs constant attention. I will be taking my car in to do recall replacement repairs soon. I will ask them to check the fuel emissions problem as well at crain kia in fort smith, arkansas.

An unexpected engine failure at such a critical time could have led to accidents, making it clear that there’s a serious safety concern that needs addressing immediately. Even if the fuel system issue isn’t as immediately dangerous, it still affects the vehicle’s performance and longevity.
