Automatic Emergency Braking Problems of Kia Motor Telluride

Details: while traveling approximately 65 mph on [xxx] , the emergency collision warning system in my kia activated suddenly and without cause. There were no vehicles in front, beside, or near me at the time. The system automatically engaged the brakes, causing the rear of my vehicle to jackknife. The vehicle did not slow gradually—it braked abruptly, creating a serious risk of rear-end collision. Afterward, the car would not shift back into drive, leaving me stranded in a dangerous location in the middle of the highway. This is the third time I have contacted kia regarding the same malfunction with the emergency collision warning system. The issue remains unresolved and continues to pose a severe safety hazard to myself and other motorists. Date of most recent incident: [xxx] vehicle information: 2024 kia Telluride VIN: est. Driving and trying to brake and brake pushed to floor and still not stop. I pulled over and called aaa. While waiting for aaa to arrive low brake fluid light came on. Aaa driver arrived and stated bolts protecting driver side rear tire were gone and caliper on that side were left hanging. Towed to kia dealer and stated bolts were clearly removed. Last visit to kia dealer was 30 days ago only for oil change not brake work. Dealer repaired caliper bolts and pistons for over 2000. Dealer had no idea why bolts came off by themselves and why it happened. There was no warning or lights going off until after brakes failed. Luckily when it happened I was only on back roads so could slow down eventually without incident but if I had been on highway not know how I would have come to a stop before crashing. Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to prevent it from ever happening to me or anyone else owning a kia Telluride.

After a recall on the emergency braking system was resolved, we’ve had frequent occurrences where the rear cross traffic alert system will report traffic that does not exist. The vehicle will then stop abruptly. Once this happens, the emergency brake doesn’t always completely disengage. This almost always happens in parking lots and can increase the likelihood of accidents. I’ve taken it to the dealership, but they’ve been able to replicate the issue.

Incident description on 6/7/25 while driving my 2022 kia Telluride on neighborhood street in windsor park austin texas at approximately 25-30 mph the vehicle suddenly and forcefully braked on its own with no warning and no visible obstacle or vehicle in front of me. This unexpected braking occurred under normal driving conditions, with clear weather and dry pavement, and almost caused a collision with the vehicle behind me. No warning lights appeared on the dashboard, and no manual braking was applied by me. I believe this may be related to known technical service bulletins sc243 and sc252 concerning faulty automatic braking logic and the hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu). This is a serious safety concern, and I am submitting this complaint in the hope that kia will address this potential defect through recall or repair. There are reports similar to mine at highway speeds which would be deadly. 4. What happened next? I have contacted my local kia dealership for inspection and plan to request that they document and diagnose the incident fully. Their online scheduler is showing next service appt not for over a week out which is not soon enough. I will call them first thing in the morning. I am also submitting this report to NHTSA to ensure that this is recorded as part of any ongoing safety investigation. Our vehicle was serviced within the last few months and we were assured there were no safety recalls on our vehicle. We would like this reevaluated.

The vehicle was parked(placed in park on gear shift) in a friends driveway, facing upward on approx. 15deg incline with the engine idling. My wife exited the vehicle and walked around the front of the vehicle to the houses front entrance where she spoke briefly with the owner inside the front door. On leaving the house the car was gone from where it was left parked. My wife found that it had rolled up the driveway incline until it hit a couple of pine trees at the top end of the drive and stopped. She opened the door and found the gear shift still in the parked position at which point she entered the car, placed it in reverse and backed out of the tree branches and took photos. The incident was immediately reported to kia America and the dealer. The vehicle has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now with no resolution, undergoing "testing". They say it is not operating the way it should be, but they have not been able to identify or correct the issue. Kia America has told me the issue has been elevated to kia factory tech support. Other than scratches there appears to be no major damage. Photos show driveway, trees that stopped the vehicle and debris and scratches.

We were departing [xxx]in barnstable, mass on [xxx]. As he entered the main road from the parking lot, my husband thought the driver on his left on the main road had a stop sign so he pulled out onto the street. The other driver did not have a stop sign and my husband hit him. We were going under 10mph so the air bags did not deploy. The “forward collision warning” did not activate nor did the “emergency braking system” function yet the plastic front end of our car was totally smashed and the side of the other car had just a large scratch and a flat tire. We had the car shipped back to denver where we live and emich kia declared it a “total” because they said the frame might be bent. I have contacted kia corporation and their ceo repeatedly to point out that their car malfunctioned and did not stop when it was supposed to stop. They do not care and did state that the car had only sustained damage to “crushable material”. Since the damage was to crushable material and the air bags did not deploy, it is obvious that it was a slow speed crash and the emergency braking system and the warning system should have functioned. This 2024 kia was our second 2024. The first new one we purchased stuttered violently and the check engine light illuminated each time we drove down from the colorado mountains. Once again, kia took no responsibility for this issue for over a year so our local dealer finally bought back that lemon and sold us the one that malfunctioned in the crash. Two faulty kia Tellurides in one year points to serious problems with this car and the kia corporation because they will not acknowledge problems nor attempt to solve them in a timely manner. My kia Telluride backup camera and screen has become unusable with random colors, screen dark spots, blacking out, and pixelation. This is becoming a widespread problem according to multiple message board posts for Tellurides. I cannot use the backup camera. Most users are reporting kia refuses to cover as a safety issues and is charging over $8000 to replace the entire infotainment system. There were no warnings, just starting happening randomly and is now seemingly permanent.

After driving through snow and letting my Telluride sit in the garage for a few days before driving it again, when I put the vehicle in drive and attempted to leave my garage there was a loud clunking noise and the vehicle didn't move for several seconds. I have also noticed that the automatic emergency brake will engage if the vehicle is in neutral and the driver's side door is open. How would you be able to load the vehicle on a flatbed truck if it was in an accident? a.

While driving approximately 40mph down straight roadway without anything around, the vehicle has unexpectedly slammed on the brakes. This has happened four times to date (11/13/24 - 12/25/24). During two of the instance's lights flashed on the dashboard and indicated the front right corner sensor of vehicle. During the other two occurrences, lights flashed on the dashboard and indicated the sensor at the rear right corner of vehicle, even though the vehicle was again traveling forward at approx. 40mph. In each case the brakes were unexpectedly applied very hard for several seconds before returning to normal. There were no other vehicles around and no dirt or other obstructions to the sensors. Vehicle was brought into dealer for diagnostics and was told they could not duplicate the concern. I asked the dealership to contact kia for support and they refused. I then contacted kia directly asking for assistance in getting this resolved. They responded that they rely on diagnostics from the dealership and only if the dealership can duplicate the issue will anything be done. This is an extremely dangerous drivability issue of which the dealer agrees. But since they have not witnessed it firsthand, no further action is being taken to attempt to find and/or replace whatever part is malfunctioning. In searching the NHTSA website, I see several complaints where individuals have experienced strikingly similar complaints (NHTSA # 11538285, 11485486, 11457515, 11457281, 11589381) with this vehicle.

I was backing out of a parking space and the automatic emergency brake kicked in. It scared the daylights out of me. I was actively using my mirrors and there was nothing behind me and nothing else moving for that to have happened.

Every time this issue happens, all the safety warnings are going off on my dashboard, telling me to check each safety feature and that it's currently not working. 1 - check awd/4wd 2 - check blind spot safety system 3 - check tire pressure monitoring system 4 - check Smart crusie control system 5 - check forward side safety system 6 - check rear cross traffic safety system 7 - check lane following assist system 8 - check lane change assist function 9 - check lane safety system 10 - check speed limit system 11-check high beam assist system 12 - check inattentive driving warning system 13 - check door system 14 - check truck lift gate system - all going off while I also lose mph and turn signal capability and cameras.

My dealer installed new software that sets the parking brake when the shifter is put in the park position. When I'm driving the car and stopped at a red light and open my door to let an insect out or spit or to make sure the door was closed completely or whatever the reason, the parking brake is set even though the car is still in drive and my foot is on the brake. This is fine. However, when I close the door, release my foot from the brake pedal and press the accelerator, the parking brake remains engaged. I feel that this can lead to safety issues if a driver is not aware of why their car will not move. They can become a traffic hazard or attempt to drive their car with the parking brake still engaged. My kia dealer said that's the way it is and they cannot do anything to change it. I also reported this issue to kia directly but have not yet received a reply.

This vehicle was purchased back in July 2023. On multiple occasions since then, the automatic emergency braking system has activated and slammed on the brakes when not needed. There have been no other cars, animals or other hazards to cause it to do so. Very dangerous that this keeps happening. Most recent and worse incident was yesterday(5/16/24). It is going to the dealer for service today. It's still under warranty and has approximately 55000 miles on it. Kia customer service help line showed little concern over incidents. We'll see what happens at the dealership today when I take it in.

On multiple occasions, the automatic braking has engaged while reversing even though there has been no risk of collision. It has happened with no cars, pedestrians, or other obstacles in sight. The brakes engage suddenly and with no warning causing the car to come to a violent stop. In one case it happened while reversing off a main road into our driveway. The sudden and unnecessary stop meant that the front of car was jutting into the main road with oncoming traffic. In other cases, it has just caused immediate unnecessary concern that we have hit something. It is possible to disable this functionality but the setting cannot be saved - so it needs to be disabled every time you turn on the car. We have engaged with the dealer and with kia directly and neither have offered any solution to the problem. The suggestion seems to be that this is normal behavior for the car. From my perspective this is a defective system and is dangerous. At a minimum, it should be possible to disable it completely.

Vehicle's paint located on the front of the hood and top of roof close to the front windshield has started to delaminate and peel away. The dealer said the vehicle is out of warranty for paint concerns. I know this is a large problem from kia/hyundia white vehicles. My son's 2015 sonata, daughter's 2012 sorento and now my wife's 2020 Telluride! all thease vehicles are white and all are peel or have been peeling for some time. I just want to get my wife's Telluride repaint to be paid for by kia since they know this is a know problems and have fixed others.

Teluride 2021 owners manuel, page 5-64, 5-63 and the kia” features and functions guide. “page 15, shows directions for using the fca, or forward collision avoidance. But there is no such safey option in the car. Further the drivers assist - - - forward safety option, show in the owners manuel, is not on my onbord screen. There is no disclaimer such as “if so equipped”. For me this is a important kia failure.

Here are some basic facts on what has happened: on August 1st I was in my driveway, in mt pleasant, SC, when my car rolled down my driveway with my two kiddos inside, resulting in me reacting and getting knocked over by the driver side door and the car running over my chest. I had 5 broken ribs, 4 are now titanium, several broken bones, a punctured lung and a torn acl. There is a police report but do not have to upload right now this was reported and kia had my car for about a month to investigate it and gave us a very brief response stating “after the preliminary investigation results indicate that the vehicle functioned as intended, no issues found with the parking mechanism. ” because of the trauma this has caused me, I made my husband make the car disappear and he sold it to a local carmax in charleston. This safety recall came out on March 26th saying cars rolled away and they are updating software so cars do not move with car doors open. Kia is also stating there have been 16 cases not resulting in injuries. The kia I had is a 2021 within this range and the VIN is 5xyp6dhc4mg154150.

The reverse camera remains engaged even after shifting to drive. This can remain after 10-20 seconds. As I started to drive forward, the camera remained engaged and hit on moving cars behind me causing the vehicle to emergency brake even though nothing was in front of me. Almost causing an accident.

While driving in a parking garage and going down a ramp to the next level, all of the lights on my dashboard popped on and the brakes stopped working. The emergency brakes failed to work, and we crashed into a wall/air conditioning unit. Luckily, we were going slow since we were in a parking garage and did not hit another car, but if we were on a highway and/ my entire family were in the car, someone could have died not only in my car but in other cars. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealership, but only after 3 weeks, and I've had to call to get any sort of communication from kia. They have been horrible with communication. They also have not offered guaranteed reimbursement for a rental car nor have they offered a loaner. Insurance has inspected the car from a collision perspective and gave a quote on the damages. There were warning lights on as we were going down the ramp when the brakes went out.

The forward collision-avoidance assist, fca is the main component that failed on me numerous times before inevitably ending in a car accident. The car is currently with my insurance company statefarm, to assess the damage and to see if it was a total loss or not. They have had it since the accident that occurred back on August 20, 2022. The car had multiple electrical issues that unfortunately were temperamental as to when they would happen so because of that I started to take video on my phone when ever they did happen to show the dealership of the malfunction when it happened so they could see with their own eyes that there was a problem. I attempted to have the dealership fix it but the gm nicely said, "if it doesn't happen with us then it then it didn't really happen and we don't care if you have video or not! that's our policy so sorry about your luck!!!" it was the fca and the lane keeping assistance that were the 2 main parts that malfunctioned that risked my safety and the safety of others. The fca is what malfunctioned during the accident. It would randomly slam on the brakes as if I was about to hit something and the lights would flash and the beeping would sound each time it did this even though there was nothing around me. The other times it had done this to me prior it would only happen 1 time and then it would go back to normal but the date of the accident it continued to malfunction over and over again. There were sensors broken on the car from the moment I drove it off the lot back in April of 2022 and have had replaced. The fca had been malfunctioning since early June and I first reported it to kia back on June 22nd 2022. Kia just sent me a letter confirming the fca does malfunction but its to late now! I have so much more to report but not enough space to tell you everything! they could of helped me when I showed them proof but they didn't care. Their negligence risked my life and my children's lives!!!.
