There is a safety recall for the 2019-2020 Land Rover Discovery models. 414-01 safety recall: startup battery ground stud - insufficient ground contact Land Rover tech bulletin dated 09 Dec 2020 on July 25 my 2017 Land Rover Discovery lost power, instrumentation went haywire, and steering limp as I was making a turn onto us-90. On August 5 it would not start. Eventually jump started it, as the battery did not seem to register to the vehicle. On August 6 it again lost power, drive train went limp, all warnings lit up, and steering died as I was getting onto I-95 on August 7 jlr of jacksonville informed me they found arching burn marks on the battery ground stud. They knew this as a common issue from the previous tech bulletin. The 2017&2018 have the same design as the 2019&2020, why are the 2017&2018 not included in the recall?.

Vehicle electronics began going crazy. The instrument cluster and gages just started flashing and pulsating. The transmission and mode selection cluster lit up like a christmas tree. The engine power and steering went limp. The transmission eventually stuck in drive. This occurred twice while driving on the roadway. The second time I had it towed to the dealership. The dealership found the m6 ground stud to be arching. This same issue is a technical bulletin for the 2019-2020 models, but 2017-2018 which are of the same design and build were left off the recall.
Mhev vehicle is offline; car completely shut down, resulting in loss of power on the road.

Driving down the highway at night in the rain and car died completely. . . All electronics shut off, car shut off and had no power to steering or breaks or anything. Would not start once it was pulled over and had to be towed to dealer. At the dealership I was told the leaking windshield had eroded the wiring throughout. They could not start or power the car at all. They removed the complete interior and have had the car for 45 days with no estimate of when it is drivable again.

I own a 2021 Land Rover Discovery with VIN [xxx] , and I am experiencing issues that align with the national recall for the mhev battery. My vehicle’s start-stop functionality fails intermittently, and the system is in an “offline state,” disrupting communication and critical functions. Additionally, due to these mhev battery errors, my vehicle cannot receive over-the-air updates provided by Land Rover, further impacting its performance and reliability. I request that my vehicle be reviewed for inclusion in the recall and that the necessary repairs be covered. This ongoing issue presents a significant inconvenience and safety concern. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Front parking aid sensors do not alert me to objects in front of me when parking forward. I have to first backup two feet to get it to work, then it picks it up once I put in forward motion again. The dealer stated that they have no recalls for this problem even though my vehicle is in warranty.

Complete loss of all electrical power (while driving, although incident occurred at a stop-light) due to ground stud failure. Component previously subject to a recall in 2021. Appears that the manufacturer fix implemented as part of the recall failed.
The contact owns a 2017 Land Rover Discovery. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v393000 (electrical system, latches/locks/linkages) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Multiple window register motor failures rendering windows fixed in open positions leaving driver and passengers unprotected.

The contact owns a 2017 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated that the check engine light had illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the contact was informed that both the front driver side seat belt pretensioner and door latch were defective which caused the warning light to illuminate. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
the contact owns a 2019 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the rear passenger door opened. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact she would have to pay for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 23v393000 (electrical system, lock/latches/ linkages). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Land Rover. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the "door ajar" message was displayed. The contact stated that her daughter was seated in the rear seat when the rear driver's side door inadvertently opened while driving. The contact was able to close the rear driver's side door; however, the failure recurred, and the rear driver's side door failed to latch. The contact's husband secured the rear driver's door with a ratchet strap to prevent the door from opening. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear driver's side door latch was internally faulty, and the rear driver's side door latch was replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 23v393000 (electrical system, latches, locks, and linkages); however, the contact had not received the recall notification. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
Driving down the highway, the vehicle all the sudden started smoking, forcing me to pull over. Upon pulling over, I found it was a fire under the left front hood based on the smoke pouring out. I called 911 immediately. I attempted to save some belongings, including my $200k boat, but failed to save anything as the fire rapidly grew forcing me to step far away. I then watched my car, boat and belongings all perish to nearly nothing before the fire department arrived and put out the fire. While I am lucky to be safe and have adequate insurance, others may not fair so well when their Land Rover Discovery 5 petrol catches fire.
The contact owns a 2017 Land Rover Discovery. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v393000 (electrical system, latches/locks/linkages) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at 5 mph, the tailgate door opened unintendedly. Additionally, the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while the transmission was shifted to reverse(r), the display screen failed to function as designed. The dealer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I was in a parking lot adjusting settings via the touch screen when the vehicle suddenly deactivated the key fob rendering the vehicle useless. The only option was to get the spare key to start the vehicle. This presents a safety issue for all occupants if the vehicle is disabled because of a malfunction with the key, potentially leaving people stranded in a unsafe environment.

I was completely stopped at a red light. I have just left work and was 2 miles down the street. My rear window completely exploded. Glass flew everywhere. The noise was so loud that it caused ear pain. I have requested a complete inspection from the dealership along with a review of the edr system and sdr. This happened on Wednesday 3/15. I am concerned this was electrical given the car had only been turned on for 3 minutes and I was at a complete stop with zero impact. I am concerned for this to happen again with my children in the car or for the possibility of a short circuit affecting the airbags, additional window, breaks, anything else. I have submitted videos and photos to the dealership to review and as you can see the points are at the electrical boxes on the left and right side of the window. I would like this reviewed for safety concerns.
The contact owns a 2019 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated while reversing and when the contact shifted the vehicle into park, the warning light illuminated stated that the vehicle was in driver. The contact turned shutting down the vehicle, but the vehicle would not shut down, the contact disconnected the battery, and the vehicle was able to operate normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that they believe it was the shifting box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer stated the vehicle warranty had run out. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Windshield replaced three times faulty seal, tires defected fell apart within two years less than 10,000 miles on vehicle.
Windshield leak cause water to drain into floor boards and accumulate until electrical connectors were affected. The dash and display screen went completely black when driving, as well as the car refusing to start.
Vehicle warning lights come on including traction control and engine warning. Vehicle stops running after halting and then quits running completely. I had the vehicle towed 80 miles to the nearest dealer in columbia, SC they reported that it was a loose ground wire on the battery and told me it was resolved. Less than a month later the same thing happened again and all 4 wheels locked up requiring the towing company to drag it onto the flat bed two truck. It was towed to the local dealer in hardeeville, SC for repair last Friday and am waiting on a notice that they are working on the vehicle. I did report the issue to the local dealer prior to the latest event and was told that the earliest available appointment was a month out. I was not told of any recall by either dealer but was told that they are having the same issue with “so many cars” the first event was on September 13th and the second on October 14th.
The car will go dead. Had battery replaced at dealer on 5-28-22. 2 days later the car was dead and will not start. After messing with the negative cable where it’s connected to the chassis was able to start the car. After the car was running for about a minute the negative cable was very hot to the touch. This has been an ongoing problem with this car. After see other recalls for this battery cable issue am afraid the car could die while driving it. Our VIN is not associated with any recall. We feel the car is unsafe to drive and can also leave was stranded.
Our 2017 Land Rover Discovery hse tdi6 has been to the dealer multiple times since purchased new in 2018. This vehicle has several safety issues. First is the random and repeatable shut down of the abs, stability, automatic braking, electric steering, windshield leak causing considerable water penetration. The primary concern is the vehicle will lose communication with the abs, airbag, stability, braking steering computer at any time while driving. This vehicle had been inspected prior with no known fix. This issue nearly caused an accident on Monday 3-14--2022. Vehicle can be hard to control when the lights on the dash turn on, loss of steering assist and suspension (floating, roughness, swerve etc). Windshield leak started approx 3 weeks ago and there is a strong musty odor. Other items we've had issues with are the infotainment system not starting or freeing up (not booting properly) keeping us from engaging the window defroster. I'm presently more concerned about the potential loss of control with the vehicle. Dealer service times are out several weeks and this is a primary use vehicle for us. I feel these issues are significant enough to warrant further action. I tried uploading images and video but the NHTSA website doesn't appear to be working at this time. I have a catalog of information regarding these issues. Finally, several Land Rover forums have users who experience virtually identical issues as my vehicle. I believe this is a safety issue and could cause an accident if the driver is unaware of the loss of steering, suspension and abs breaking. Thank you.
Car went black (all systems shut off) and I started to roll in the cvs parking lot when I was trying to drive in and park. The brakes and nothing was engaging. It happened so fast I was able to stop the vehicle and I am not sure how but may have just turned the shifter from drive to park. . . I took the vehicle in for service (a number of issues) and I forgot to mention this, I was told the ground stud needed replacing and it turned out this was likely the cause (I believe he said it had come loose). I have a extended warranty that has comprehensive coverage with cna and they denied this part. Also, Land Rover recalled this exact part on 2019 and 2020 vehicles, clearly my 2018 has the same issue. Makes me wonder how many other 2018 vehicles also have the issue?.
I was driving on th highway when all my electrical went out no lights no signal noting the car is in the shop it has happened multiple times.
Vehicle susceptible to water leaks inside the electrical system from the outside causing error messages.
The windshield failed allowing rain water to pool in the floorboards of the vehicle. The electronics were destroyed, the damage done was well above $20,000. 00. Land rover didn’t take any responsibility as it was 40 days outside of warranty. The car had less than 40,000 miles on it. Likely my insurance kicked in and declared the vehicle a total loss.
This is an update to complaint number 11436854, submitted on 10/14/2021, 5:53:21 pm additional service has been performed on the vehicle to identify and correct random electrical faults interrupting the safe operations of this vehicle. Service record generated by Land Rover boise, id (ro number 520844) is attached as an uploaded file. This ro indicates the third repair by Land Rover dealers that have serviced this vehicle (lynnwood, wa; flatirons, CO and boise, id) regarding the ground stud update, and now provides the documentation of another ground fault in the locking actuator (door locks are randomly actuating w/driving).
This vehicle should be considered as a "drive at your own risk" vehicle. Engine randomly fails to start using push button start in coordination with pressing on the brake pedal. Dash and gages indicated all electrical systems were on and no warning symbols were displayed. Repeated attempts by owner to start vehicle failed. Attempts using remote start app erroneously indicated that the vehicle was already in operation. Fail-to-start generally existed for 2-4 hours before the vehicle would randomly start. Failure to start and stranding owner repeated 4 times over the next 8 days, including while the vehicle was in service shop of dealer. Dealer service could not identify source of the problem and produced records that the safety recall for the battery ground stud issue had already been performed. Dealer service records (attached) recommended against driving vehicle due to "what seems to be intermittent high speed power train communications fault". Owner has requested dealer by back due to this repetitive and unresolved safety problem. Refusal from Land Rover to buy the vehicle back places this consumer safety issue back into owners hands which triggered the moral obligation to submit this information to the NHTSA as a safety problem.
Had recall completed one month ago to correct ground wire location. Two days ago the auto start/ stop activating while in a drive through, the warning lights came on where all safety features were disabled. Gear shifter blinking in "d". Had to put transmission in park, then was able to put back in drive. When accelerating out of the parking lot at about 40 mph the vehicle shut off. Starting back instantly, but displayed gearbox failure message. Made it home vehicle shut off in the drive way and wouldn't start back, the tachometer was stuck on 1k rpm, but no power to the vehicle. Waited two hours and the vehicle started back without any issue. Towed to Land Rover as it is a hazard to drive. 2nd attempt at Land Rover for electrical issue fix. Researching online many owners have had this problem with little to no resolution from dealership/Land Rover.
One month after purchasing my Land Rover Discovery I noticed there was a lag time when trying to accelerate when making a turn. I took it to the dealership and they said it should be resolved by updating the system. They updated it but it continued to have the lag issue so I complained again and they said it's the nature of the car. I told them this was very dangerous and they claim they haven't received enough complaints to say it's an issue with car. I also have had other electrical problems such as the navigation screen going blank while driving or not coming on at all and also my remote key fobs do not work all the time. Even with the remotes in my hand near the console the car will say they are not detected. I brought it back to the dealer and they said they were fine. Today, I received a recall from Land Rover stating there are various electrical issues with car where the vehicle could cut out while in motion and may lose all electrical power. I called the dealership to find out they are booked out for 3 weeks so I will have to continue to drive this unsafe car. I think it's very irresponsible of Land Rover to put owners in a position to continue to drive a very unsafe car. These cars should be taken off the road.
There is a very serious issue in landrover Discovery 2017 that abruptly shuts down the engine for no apparent reason. On Nov 20th, 2020 my wife was travelling to pittsburgh PA on route 76 PA turnpike. Near bradfordford, PA the engine suddenly shut itself down without any pre-warning. The car stalled with no ability or ample time for her to steer to the shoulder. Until highway patrol arrived, she was completely left in a helpless and life threatening situation. Any big truck could've easily rear ended her and killed her. Highway patrol and turnpike authority service personnel arrived onsite, inspected the car but did not find any apparent issue. Without anything done on the car, after 15 mins or so the engine started normally as if nothing happened.
First three days before 5/14/2019 the seatbelts lights were on and off, and on may14/2019 I was on my way to work the car just stop in the middle of the road. . . The break were locked.
There is a dangerous throttle lag when accelerating from a rolling stop. Many users have nearly had accidents like me. You press throttle and it does nothing for like 2 seconds then suddenly engine picks up. . . Its a gasoline v6 engine so its not turbo lag. . . . And when you are actually stopped and accelerate its just fine. Its just when slowly rolling its extremely dangerous!!!.
Tl the contact owns a 2019 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, the side view mirrors folded in and out independently. Additionally, the truck would unlock independently. The contact took the vehicle to Land Rover paramus (405 NJ-17, paramus, NJ 07652) where the vehicle was repaired for unknown electrical issues however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered $1,500 towards the purchase of another vehicle. The failure mileage was 20,000.
