5 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/29/2012

Was driving down the road during hurricane sandy and the car shifts (or lags) into extremely low gear, maybe 5-10 mph. The service engine, service engine soon, and other lights on dash came on and vehicle was lurching. Once I able move to the side of the road, I am able to turn the vehicle off, wait less than 5 minutes and turn back on, still doing same thing. Luckily friends house was just down the street, and cop stayed behind us until we got there. This vehicle had about 110,000 miles when we purchased from a private party out of state - three weeks and three hundred miles later the vehicle is now dead. These Freelanders are not dependable. I don't know what to do because it was fine when I bought it, and mechanic now says it needs 7,000 worth of work!! this is and would have been extremely dangerous, especially if you are on the highway driving the speed limit and the car just suddenly lags to 5 mph! please take these vehicles off the road!!.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/16/2012

F-4 flashing on the odometer, both check engine lights on, and the hill descent/traction control lights coming on. Vehicle quickly dropped power to no power. Service engine soon light and car lost power while driving, something with the throttle was repaired the first time. Then the harness was repaired and two weeks later the vehicle is doing the same thing again. Mechanical problems continue now going on the 4th trip to the auto mechanic shop. There is no warranty left. Maybe there is something to be done. It is obvious that I am not the only one having the same problem and yet nothing has been done to correct any situation. I will never purchase another landrover in any model and will let anyone that is interested in purchasing a landrover of any model that they are not worth buying due to all the mechanical problems that knowingly seem to occur over and over. Where landrover is making no attempt to make it right or even notify such situations in their vehicle. I would rather drive a Ford at this point then to be stuck with this high maintenance problem of a high end vehicle. Landrover might not care about their consumers because they are selling the vehicle and who cares what happens after words we have our money. Thank you for taking time to read all reports of your worthless vehicles. Not impressed!.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

Purchased the truck in 2003 from Land Rover, brand new. Dealt with a few recalls and other issues ( sun roof was off track, did not work. Leather seats had deformations on seats. Truck need an acid wash for spots that developed on bumper) soon my engine and coolant issues occurred. Why driving id notice my truck start to overheat. This was even after being serviced at Land Rover. Come to find out my coolant was leaking. The issue continued to the point where I had to get new external parts ( thermostat, water pipe, expansion tank) this helped but not for long. My truck continued to overheat and leak, o the point I had to replace the cylinder head gasket and the timing belt. . I accumulated only 56,000 miles over 9 years of driving this truck and spent +$20,000 trying to save it . . . I see why this model was discontinued after only one year. I have to take my situation to civil court even though this should fall under the lemon law. The class action group I was apart of for 4 years has made no progress at all.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

Rear tail lamp housings failed numerous times causing the bulbs not to work. This created a situation where only one or none of the lamps were working. I replaced them and later found out that a recall or investigation was issued but I was never notified. Interior dome light has failed twice. Headlamp failure has occurred in low beam six times and in high beams three times. The vehicle has stalled on numerous occasions when the heated seats, heated windshield and headlamps were on simultaneously.

9 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

In heavy rain or slush the engine will just die (even going through the car wash!). I have been left on the side of the freeway roughly a half dozen times, a couple of times in very unsafe locations. I'm guessing that it's an electrical problem, but the dealership in both corte madera and rosville, California said they will charge me hundreds to isolate the source of the problem. . .

10 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 06/19/2009

I am driving an SUV - Freelander se3 of the Land Rover, and have a defect that is getting worse as the car get into highs miles. I can be driving over 50 miles per hour and the service engine light came up, followed by t/c and decent hill lights, them the car have a strong jump and the d (drive mode) change to a flashing "f" "4"- them suddenly the engine shotoff. I drive with the fear that one day I will not be able to pull over and I will be crashing. Another problem is that the vehicle loss total power and stop moving, no matter how hard I press down the gas pedal.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/23/2009

Prior to this major problem, the car has had several minor electrical issues: windows getting stuck in up and down position, rear wiper malfunction; also, unable to defrost driver's side of windshield. Car has been in the shop on two separate occasions for issues that were not quick fixes: 1. Brake work 2. Car got stuck in gear and was unable to reverse. For the past few months, car has been revving when driving between 10 and 20mph. Most recently, it braked hard and suddenly without the driver pressing the brake. Currently, the car is flashing f and 4 in the dash display and is unable to accelerate. The car is unable to climb even the slightest of inclines. The driver was able to drive it to an auto repair shop. The mechanic at the shop believes the transmission is "shot", but suggested having it diagnosed at a mr. Transmission.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/27/2008

Have owned 2002 lr Freelander since may 2008, for around $9,000, have spent $4000 on repairs since. Transfer case went in the end of November, then the transmission died in the middle of January. The car was returned to me "fixed" early February but the transmission died again within 25 miles of the auto shop, luckily the work was under warranty, they found that an electrical issue was the true problem and returned it to me "fixed" again March 6, 2009, not even 20 miles this time and I'm getting the f4 signal, hdc warning, and the gears won't shift. I owe to much on the car to scrap it, but can't imagine wasting more money to have it sit in the shop for another couple of months (while im making payments on it) just to suffer the same fate.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/12/2008

Bought a 2002 Land Rover Freelander used a little over a year ago with under 55,000 miles. Just got it back yesterday from the shop with an estimated repair cost of over $10000. 00 and that is just in parts not labor. Did some research on the vehicle and come to find out others have had the same problems with less mileage on there vehicles and there have been absolutely no recalls on this vehicle that include any of these problems. The worst of which being the engine leaking antifreeze into the oil. This could cause the motor to overheat and seize and lock up. Who knows what kind of damage or what kind of accident this could have caused if this had happened to the vehicle when my wife was driving to work . We lucked out and discovered the problems before my wife, myself or anyone else got hurt. There are major problems with these vehicles and landrover should be held responsible.

14 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

My lr Freelander 2003, has an overheating problem, the head gasket is blown and is in need of repair. There are now mechanics that will fix the problem except for the Land Rover dealer and they can not guarantee the work. There is a design defect with the heads in this vehicle know by the manufacturer but they refuse to make this a recall to the consumers and they have stopped making this engine. I need this repair done so I may at least trade the vehicle in for a new vehicle.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/27/2008

Brake lights not working, brake switch was recalled & then the recall was recalled. Resulting in no brake lights at all.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 02/27/2008

I have 78k on my '03 Land Rover Freelander and the transmission just went out with the f-4 flashing on the odometer, check engine light on, and the hill descent/traction control lights coming on. Took it to the dealer which I have the warranty through, and they said it needs to be replaced for $3300, and the warranty company won't cover it. It has been in the shop since the end of Feb '08 and I still haven't gotten it back, nor does anyone have any info on it. As far as events leading up to the incident, there was no warnings. It was running fine on the day prior, but then the next day it started shifting hard and the all the lights and codes occurred.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/09/2007

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. The dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the SUV is worth. And yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). I personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. Another poor design flaw issue, and I was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. Yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway!.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/22/2007

June 31 driving 30 miles, the vehicle made sounds as though gears were shifting, & check engine lights, tc light, & track control lights came on, & vehicle lost major power, resulting to a drag in transmission allowing to drive about 2-5 miles. Jul 1 vehicle taken to carmax service (cm), of which both lights had gone off. I was advised that the vehicle was still under manufacturer?s warranty, & cm would have it towed ASAP. July 5 cm sr advised me that they determined no problems, & the issue I experienced was most likely caused by a loose gas cap. July 19 upon my travel, I experienced no engine trouble, but my back passenger window wouldn't roll up. July 23 vehicle taken to cm; they sent the vehicle to lr to have the back window motor replaced. I didn't bother with advising of the every so often engine problems, because I assumed it was the gas cap. July 25 I refused to take possession due to a very loud clicking sound coming from the engine. It was sent back to lr. On July 26, cm sr advise me that lr says the clicking sound is one of the characteristics in a lr; however the clicking is a little louder than usual, & they would order a few parts to quiet the clicking sound down. Early Aug while driving down peachtree st in atlanta, GA with ample traffic, in rain, thunder, & lightening, 40 miles, vehicle engine gave out again, with all lights coming on, & no power. October 20 driving i75-s, it happened again. It lost power while driving 60+ miles, as the lane curved. Turning into a service station, it lost power again. Oct 22 vehicle is currently at the lr, while incurring a rental car cost, I am uncertain as to what the temporary fix will be. I want out! I will be contacting cm to inquire about a buy back, of which the lr service advisor informed me of.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/28/2007

A sensor shut down the motor while I was driving on I-55. It required me to coast to the side of the road. (this happened in the summer of 2006. ) last month, the water resevoir in the engine busted (despite dutiful maintenance) requiring a completely new engine to be installed. The radio has also malfunctioned twice, being replaced last time. No one was injured in either case, but it could have easily resulted in deaths when the vehicle quit in 70 mile per hour traffic!.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

Transmission failure at 75,000 miles. Excessive check engine light warnings. Bad sensors. Engine noise.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/10/2007

The year is accurate, month and date are approximations started having problems with overheating and coolant leaks. Coolant wouldn't puddle under vehicle, though. But I could smell it sometimes with windows open. Then, one day it would not start. Towed it to Land Rover dealer and over the course of 3 days, they couldn't start it,either. Was told it needed a new engine. Paid out $5800+. Now,with 104,000 miles,it's losing coolant, again. They claimed the over flow container was leaking. Had it replaced. And it is still losing coolant. It is not puddling under the truck. I saw, online, where the Freelander has a possible engine defect, with cylinder sleeves and gasket problems. Do I have any recourse with Land Rover? or, could the lemon law come into effect? I,also, have experienced rear window and sunroof motor failures. I am retired. I cannot afford to replace another engine ! thank you.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 11/17/2006

After the steering system failed completely a week ago (reported separately, odi# 10173809), the Land Rover dealer in san francisco replaced the rack and pinion assembly. Within 2 hours after I got the car back, the electric system failed completely while I was driving and the car stopped in the middle of traffic.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/22/2006

The electrical power to the engine simply goes out; thus affecting the steering. I believe that it is an electrical problem; however, landrover rockville ran a diagnostic and found nothing. In October, the power went out while making a turn and I lost control of the car hitting a curb. Also, the sunroof has cost me over $2k. First, I was required to replace the tracks. Then the roof began to leak and I was required to replace the entire assembly. This car was a mistake from the beginning.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/19/2005

I purchased a new 2002 Land Rover Freelander from Land Rover new orleans (paretti) on August 19, 2002. Since that time, the vehicle has had continuous problems. The power steering, transmission, transfer case (2), ird unit (2), front drive shaft, manifold chamber and other items have been replaced and the brake pads (2) have had to be changed. The vehicle only has 35,498 miles. After reviewing edmunds. Com and other consumer resource sites, it appears that the problems that I encountered have also been encountered by others purchasing this vehicle. I have had 23 warranty claims on this vehicle and Land Rover north America, inc. , as of January 2005, has paid in excess of $11,994. 55 for repairs on a vehicle that had a purchase price of $30,603. 77. The aforementioned amount does not include the costs of replacing the transfer case, ird unit, front drive shaft and manifold chamber in April 2005 or the replacement of the sun roof assembly in June 2005. Neither the local Land Rover dealer nor Land Rover north America, inc. Have been cooperative in dealing with me on this issue.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/30/2004

While driving the car, first the check engine light came on, few minutes later a second light(the check engine soon light) came on, then the car stalled completely from a speed of 40 km/hr. This is the third time im sending the vehicle to the dealer to be checked for engine lights, but its the first time the car stops completely. All in all this is the 5th time I had a serious defect, requiring the car to be sent to the dealer.

29 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 10/03/2003

We own a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. It has been in the repair shop numerous times. While on a trip all of the warning lights on the dashboard lite up and the transmission became stuck in 4th gear. Because road side assistance could not direct us to an open dealership, we had to drive from buffalo NY to chicago IL. Once back in the city, the dealership took the car and replaced the computer, which took more than two weeks. On the way home, the same problem occurred. We brought the car back and the dealership has had the vehicle for the past 26 days to replace the transmission. We went in to try and trade it in for a discovery and they only offered 14,000. We have tried to get corporate to buy back the car at our pay off amount and they have refused. We are currently exploring our options under the ucc and the magnuson-moss act for breach of warranty.
