Land Rover Freelander owners have reported 5 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Land Rover Freelander based on all problems reported for the Freelander.
Replaced thermostat due to coolant leakage. Service engine soon light keeps coming on and car looses power and shakes violently. Have had to pull over numerous times and shut engine down and leave for a few minutes, service engine soon light stays illuminated. Now tc (traction control) and downhill decent light keep coming on. Took to repair shop and they replaced brake light switch, but lights illuminated while on their final test drive. They told me everything was fine, it could be a wiring issue with the harness and would need to schedule time to investigate. I left the shop and drove 1. 5hrs home only to have my husband follow me in the car while I had our 3yr old child with me and tell me the brake lights aren't working at all! when is enough to do something about these unsafe vehicles???
we have also just changed brake discs/rotors and pads for the 3rd time at 87,000 miles.

Less than 50,000 miles landrover Freelander gives f4 fault, will not shift out of 2nd gear. Has overheating problem, sunroof died, dealer said needs new transmission, completely new wiring harness, new ecu, new door to fix window failure, and!!!!!!!!!!!! a new engine to fix the overheating problem that they tell me is a common thing, and they haven't seen any Freelander's get over 65,000 miles without an engine and transmission replacement. Luxury vehicle my ass. Dealership gave me an 18,000 dollar repair estimate. I guess luxury means it costs a lot to drive not you have the luxury of driving without worrying about sitting on the side of the road in a 30,000 dollar piece of crap. Read some forums online. All of these problems are happening everyday, and nothing is being done to make this luxury vehicle company make a better vehicle. I mean damn I should have bought a Honda. . . . . . At least they have heated seats to keep my ass warm when I wait on the side of the road.

The free lander service engine light and service engine soon light came on and the vehicle lost all engine power. The vehicle was returned to the ascot import cars with less than 12000 miles. Ascot (the dealership) cleared the error codes and returned the feelander. The next day the lights came on again, and the car's engine lost all power. Ascot claimed to replace the wiring harness and the ecu; however, this is hard to verify because it is very difficult to get accurate service records from them. On March 25, the lights came on again, the car's engine lost power; however, after the car was restarted the lights went out. Ascot import cars is reluctant to give us service records, and when they do they are very vague. Although each time the problem occurs,it is the same, the diagnosis is slightly different. I believe this is an attempt to avoid a lemon law claim.
The car was purchased new in 2002. With only 23,000 miles, the vehicle has been out of service for 43 days with catastrophic mechanical failures, including: 21 days for a new wiring harness; 3 days for a new gearshift assembly and 8 days for a new transmission and ecu and front brakes. Additionally, the vehicle has been in the shop 8 times for warranty repairs; and brakes. The vehicle is currently in the shop where it was been for the last 11 days with the dealer once again trying to resolve warning light and transmission issue. I have had problems with the vehicle shifting to lower gears by itself at freeway speeds. In addition all of the on-board failure lights coming on and stay on routinely. The car continues to be plagued by electrical/mechanical problems. After every visit the dealer I am assured the problem has been fixed by both the dealer and Land Rover customer service; only to find myself bringing the vehicle back literally days later with the exact same problem. Within 8 months of purchasing the new vehicle, it required three separate visits to the dealer for a total of 15 maintenance problems, but the purchasing dealer could not fix any of these problems. In June 2002, I brought the vehicle to another dealer with identical maintenance problems. Though the car continues to have hard shifting and failure lights. In October 2003, I started caring a digital camera in the vehicle so that I could document the problems.
Heater doesn't provide powerful heat and right foot gets so hot and left foot freezes while driving. Car shakes and rumbles often, sounding like there is no oil. Had severe water leak from missing seals around rear cargo door. Seals, headliner and rug had to be replaced. Gas cap can only be removed with key in it. If key is removed while gas cap is off, makes for extremely difficult time to replace (about 5-10 minutes to work the key back in). Dashboard lights come on frequently to warn of a failure when there is no such failure. Engine doesn't start on first try a lot of times. Once driving for a while then parking for, car sometimes doesn't start on first try. Shifting is difficult, rpms rev pretty high. Car has lurched forward when speed decreases (I. E. Going down hill).
