The petrol flange/fuel filter developed a crack in the top causing fuel to spray out the top of the tank when the engine was running. The tank is under the vehicle next to the exhaust system, so there is potential for a fire. There was a strong fuel smell after driving the vehicle, but no fuel dripping when parked. The problem was diagnosed with an internet search which turned up several other instances of the same problem including a video on youtube showing the same issue. Further research revealed an investigation on the issue: NHTSA action number: pe20018. I replaced the filter myself and will keep the old one in case it is needed for the investigation. Smelled fuel smell in the garage but never any drips in the garage. After investigation, fuel is leaking from top of tank and blowing back of the back of the vehicle, part of which is the tail pipe. Leak is coming from inline filter at the top of the tank. Common problem, this is dangerous and needs to be a recall.
