The 2022 repair to address NHTSA safety recall number: 21v-635 - gasoline fuel tank flange assembly cracking was inadequate and led to a fuel pump crack that we are now having to repair in January 2025, after a routine check indicated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. We transport three school-aged children in our vehicle and was told by a mechanic that the car was unsafe to drive and could blow up if we continued to drive it. My husband had the vehicle towed and contacted Land Rover, since we previously had it repaired and continued to experience the issues other drivers complained about even after the repair, including fuel odor, the malfunction indicator lamp illuminating and liquid fuel on the ground. Land rover indicated that the repair from 2022 was adequate and refused to remedy the fuel tank leak. The cost for the repair is $1700.

Fuel leaking under vehicle while parked . Previous recall for fuel filler tube completed. Since completion, strong gas odor was evident when tank was filled and in garage. Vehicle returned to dealer after the gas odor occurred after every tank fill. Vehicle returned to service center that did recall, as no issues existed prior to recall. I was told there was nothing wrong with the recall repair. I then went and immediately filled the tank and returned to same service area. I was told, still no problem. Vehicle taken to a different dealer after realizing gas was leaking onto the garage floor and repaired at my expense…$1,426. 02. It seemed enough of an urgent safety concern to have it immediately fixed. I basically was told to live with the smell at the original dealership.

The fuel system failed on my first real highway trip to the mountains. Suddenly lost power to accelerate on highway making it dangerous to pass, warning lights came on. Vehicle was taken to the nearest small town not equipped to repair however vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive and I had to have it towed 300 km home. Fuel injection system failed and caused metal bits to get into engine causing engine to also need replacement. This is at only 144,000 kms. This was a $15,200 repair. Seems like this was a huge failure of the fuel injection system.
I am writing to formally request a review of my vehicle for inclusion in NHTSA recall 21v-635, issued may 11, 2022, concerning fuel leaks at the fuel tank flange assembly. My vehicle is a 2012 Land Rover Lr4, VIN [xxx] . Although my local Land Rover dealer has informed me that my VIN is not currently included in the recall population, my vehicle is experiencing the exact condition described in the recall notice — a fuel leak originating from the fuel outlet flange mounted on the fuel tank. The recall letter for 21v-635 states that all Land Rover Lr4 vehicles model years 2010–2016 are included. My vehicle falls squarely within that model year range. Given this, and the fact that my vehicle is exhibiting the precise defect identified in the recall, I am concerned that my VIN may have been inadvertently excluded from the recall population. This issue presents a serious safety concern due to the risk of fire associated with fuel leakage. The symptoms and failure location match the recall description. I respectfully request that NHTSA review my case to determine whether: my VIN was mistakenly omitted from the recall population, or the recall population should be expanded or corrected to include my vehicle. I am prepared to provide photographs, repair estimates, diagnostic reports, or inspection documentation confirming the fuel leak at the flange assembly upon request. Because this defect involves fuel leakage and a significant potential fire hazard, I believe it warrants careful review to ensure all similarly affected vehicles are properly covered. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate your assistance in reviewing this matter and advising me on the appropriate next steps. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

• ask the customer (and document verbatim) what occurred or what the alleged defect is? I attempted multiple times to have Land Rover complete safety recall n623 – NHTSA recall number 21v-635 on my 2016 Land Rover Lr4 -gasoline fuel tank flange assembly crack. A number of the Land Rover dealerships stated that no recall existed. After multiple attempts to confirm this recall was required for my vehicle, I was able to schedule the repair at Land Rover cary. I reduced driving the vehicle to only minimal driving requirements while I was awaiting the recall requirement. The recall repair was canceled twice after I drove to cary from pinehurst, nc due to a lack of service technicians. I was driving to the dealership this third time for the repair when the fire occurred in the vehicle. I was driving to the dealership, for this recall repair, when a number of warnings flashed on the driving display. Smoke began to bellow out of the vehicle. I put on my hazards and pulled off the main highway and onto the shoulder. I turned the ignition off, exited the vehicle, and opened the hood to observe the engine bay. There were flames shooting out of the engine compartment. I went to grab my extinguisher and called 911. The flames died down rapidly. I could see that the fire melted a number of components on the bottom of the engine causing oil to spray all over. I would like to add that the driveway to my home sits at about a 30-degree incline and I typically park with the vehicle pointing down towards the nose. I wonder if the slow gas leak traveled down the vehicle towards the engine and saturated the parts with gasoline causing this issue.
When I was driving this car, I smelled gasoline very badly, so suddenly the car slammed, and then the car broke down, and there was a lot of white gas or smoke under the hood, I couldn't be sure, so I called the fire alarm was dealt with, then I towed the vehicle to the dealer, contacted my insurance, and the dealer told me there was a recall, but my engine was dead and it wasn't covered by their warranty, but I checked the recall , the reason for the recall may be that the fuel gauge cannot display accurate fuel pressure, which causes the engine to run at high temperature, and the oil cannot cool down, which eventually causes the oil pump body to burst and cause the engine to break down. If I did not contact the fire alarm, this would be a serious event. Fire is even a direct safety accident in driving. I request to report the accident and ask the dealer to bear the repair costs and all losses caused by the accident damage.
2021-08-11 recall no. 21v635000 / Land Rovers recall # n623 were completed. Following the recall repair had to go back to dealer twice ( 9/15/22 & 10/22/22) for the same issue of the fuel smell in the vehicle could be driving, parked, or idling the smell remains the smell is very overpowering kids and I are getting bad headaches/light-headed. For sure it isn't safe and don't believe the initial fix was the answer and there is more to the recall.

Fuel smell lead to fuel leaking.
There is a active recall for the fuel leak. However, the dealer cannot accommodate a repair for two months. I’m not sure what to do.

While driving at approximately 70 mph on the highway, I encountered a severe issue that jeopardized my safety and the safety of others on the road. The problem manifested as a fuel leak, resulting in fumes inside the vehicle that caused impairment to my ability to operate the vehicle safely. This impairment led to the vehicle entering a gated mode and initiating aggressive braking, almost causing a collision. This incident is deeply alarming, and I believe it poses a serious risk to the well-being of drivers and passengers. I am reaching out to request an immediate investigation into this matter and to seek information on any safety recalls or issues related to the fuel system of the 2010 Land Rover Lr4. Fuel tank flange failure caused complex problems for engine replacement needed. Not covered by Land Rover and was not repaired as reported.

Driving on the belt line in madison and car muffled and just shut down in gear. No warning, nothing. Could have caused a major accident. Coasted down the nearest exit and tried to restart. Would not turn . Timing chain malfunction according to Land Rover madison WI. I need a whole new engine. I paid for a new engine, but now they put it on indefinite back order. I can’t get an engine because it’s on back order.
My car has a strong gasoline odor when I drive it as well as when I turn it off and park it. However, especially when parking. In addition, after refueling, the fuel gauge lags for a few minutes in terms of fuel level. As a result of these events, I searched online for vehicle recalls and came across the information on your page. As you suggested, I contacted the authorized Land Rover dealer. After multiple communications and several attempts to schedule an appointment to address the issue, they inform me that they do not currently have the parts in stock to address the issue that the vehicle presents. At the same time, they tell me that if I want to fix it as soon as possible, I must pay for the service and that they will reimburse me once they receive the "recall letter. " I am currently awaiting information on the cost of the service, but I am doubtful of the dealer's explanation. I'd like to confirm with the NHTSA that this is the correct procedure. My current concern is that the high temperatures will result in a fire caused by a gasoline leak.
Strong fuel smell detected when vehicle is garaged. Smell fills garage. No evident visible leak. Smell isolated to the Lr4.
Leaking fuel tank like what is shown in recall but I am not part of the recall. I definitely have the issue. 21v635000.
I been having a fuel smell from under my 2011 Lr4 for several months, which is now severe fuel leaking from the fuel tank, and no warning lights. I have contacted Land Rover to report because of the recall campaign, and was told that nothing can be cover under recall until notified or VIN appears on recall. I have waiting for recall letters to be send out, don’t want to pay for repair and then have wait for refund of only. I am afraid to drive Lr4 because of the fuel leak, don’t want the gas leak to accidentally be spark and cause fire.
Started as fuel odor and then developed into a significant fuel leak from the fuel tank. Looks like it was the fuel tank flange. We had an extended warranty that covered the repair however the vehicle has only 36000 miles and this failure was extremely dangerous.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? fuel tank how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? slowly leaking fuel during operation. Vehicle is leaking fuel from the fuel tank area. The bottom of the tank is wet with fuel. Seems to be coming from the top of the tank. Skid plate is in place and not damaged.
Started to notice a raw gas smell after driving or just start the car. I looked for gas leak but didn't find any. Brought the car to the dealership. And the service assistant said it was the fuel gasket. She also informed me that it is a very common problem. And sure enough it was the dust cover and gasket as she predicted. I feel that this is a safety issue that seems to be very common with this vehicle .
Back in Feb 2019 my landrover suddenly leaked a large amount of gasoline and then broke down. It stopped running and needed the fuel rail & line replaced & stabilizer bar and bushings & subsequencely complete engine replacement. I also had fluid in the engine and wrecked the engine requiring us to replace the engine.
I own a 2013 Land Rover lr 4. Since owning my vehicle on at least seven occasions my lr 4 has suddenly unintentionally accelerated without pressing the accelerator. On two occasions the sudden unintended acceleration resulted in my two accidents. In January 19, 2017 my lr 4 unintentionally suddenly accelerated, after a complete stop, my car lunged forward while my foot was on the brake, and I hit another car. In December 2017, I had a frightening incident at my son's school where the car accelerated while I was in the car pool line after I stopped to allow some kids to pass in the cross walk. I had to quickly slam my car in park to miss hitting a couple of my son's classmates. In January 2018, I dropped my car off to resolve the sudden acceleration issue in my lr 4. After three weeks, Land Rover service team was able to replicate and the unintended acceleration in my lr 4 when a lr technician drove my vehicle and my lr 4 suddenly accelerated unintentionally while he was driving on the bay bridge on ramp. After this incident the lr technician had my car towed back to Land Rover and they replaced a fuel injector. The lr technician mentioned that he believed the clogged fuel injector was the source of the problem for the unintended acceleration in my lr 4. It is only a matter of time before I kill myself or someone else. I believe an investigation into the sudden unintended acceleration in Land Rovers is needed, along with a recall on the fuel injectors on the lr 4. I do not plan to resume driving my lr 4 again as it is dangerous, defective, unsafe, and I've loss complete confidence in my lr 4. I will not take another chance on my life by continuing to drive this vehicle or risk the lives of others. Land rover has not acknowledged the problem or offer any remedy. I my case to the media and ask for a congressional investigation into Land Rovers.
