1 Trunk Lid problem of the 2001 Lexus LS430

Failure Date: 10/05/2013

In the course of opening the closed car trunk lid in order to retrieve the groceries that were inside the trunk, , I pulled it up by its lower edge using the ring finger of my right hand. Without warning or reason for it to do so, the electric automatic power trunk lid closer mechanism operated and shut the lid, crushing and mangling my finger bone and finger nail, and causing excruciating pain and permanent disfigurement. I am told by the doctor who has been treating my finger that the finger soreness and pain is also a permanent condition.

4 Trunk Lid problem of the 2002 Lexus LS430

Failure Date: 02/24/2011

The trunk lid of my 2002 Lexus LS 430 has two pneumatic struts which provide lift and keep the lid up in the open position. Now, over time the struts slowly failed to keep the trunk lid open, and in a gentle breeze, the lid will come down with guillotine force. It has hit my head several times with painful results and now I am afraid to load items in my trunk without another person there to hold it open. I think that the "lift assist" of the pneumatics should be only auxiliary to a mechanism that holds the trunk in a full open position. I have never had a vehicle whose trunk lid did not stay in the open position once lifted, regardless of age.

2003 Lexus LS 430 the piston supports that hold the engine hood in place, in order to check the engine compartment, have deteriorated over time so that the engine hood can suddenly slam down, seriously injuring anyone who is checking the engine oil, coolant, etc. I almost was seriously injured while checking the oil. 12 Trunk Lid problem of the 2002 Lexus LS430

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

I had opened the trunk on my Lexus LS-430 (2002) for my 11 yrs old son to take his sports gears out of the trunk. He was leaning down inside the trunk when suddenly the trunk lid came crashing down striking on his hips, it was good it did" hurt his back. The injury resulted in tremendous pain . After the incident I inspected the trunk and found their was no resistance while going up and down with the trunk and found that the hydraulic trunk struts necessary for the safe operation of the trunk had both failed. . Several times contacted the Lexus dealer and Lexus corporation to fix the shocks. But they declined, as they stated the car is out of warrant period my car has only 32000 miles.

14 Trunk Lid problem of the 2003 Lexus LS430

Failure Date: 03/10/2008

Trunk support struts not functioning appropriately, causing trunk lid to abruptly fall and injuring anything in the path of closure. We noticed the increasing lack of ability to hold the lid open, never understanding that it actually was suppose to also lift the lid (it never did lift the lid and we have owned the car for four years/ 45,000 miles) and could have been potentially replaced during the warranty period (seems like early life failure). When asking the dealership service advisor he said, yes these do seem to weaken often and they could be replaced for $500. The consequence prior to the dealership visit was the trunk lid falling and hitting my back causing bruising. Since my shoulder helped to eliminate the blow it certainly could have been a lot worse. Potentially someone who had their hands at the base of the trunk could either have severe damage or potential loss of limb. For a high-end vehicle, let alone any vehicle, this early life failure and the danger it poses to anyone in the way of the falling trunk lid is not acceptable. Lexus/Toyota corporation should stand behind their product and provide the updated trunk strut for the safety of Ls430 owners, friends, families, and auto service personnel.

17 Trunk Lid problem of the 2001 Lexus LS430

Failure Date: 02/22/2007

This is an additional comment to my initial complaint # 10181946 which is basically the same complaint as # 10178801. I have posted my complaint on edmunds chat room and got this response: "I have the same problem with my 2001 LS 430 trunk struts. I have called and visited 5 different auto parts stores and the struts are only available through the dealer. The trunk lid has fell on my head numerous times. It is indeed a safety issue and not of Lexus quality. The trunk struts/shocks are labeled as "1fe28 w676". Let me know if you have found any aftermarket alternatives. I do not want to buy new ones from Lexus if they are only going to fail again in a short time. If you are experiencing the same problem w/the trunk struts/shocks, I want to encourage others to respond to the message posted by "slexy1" (msg. #8044)or this message, to voice your concerns to your local Lexus dealer, and finally to contact Lexus by the 800 number for customer care. Maybe we can get some positive responses if we all complain together. Thanks! matthew manning rxstudentsbcglobal. Net " please know this new information that I found out from my local Lexus dealer. I basically found out from the dealer I bought the car at in 10/00 that the part number for those trunk struts was changed from ending in "30" to "31" sometime after 2001. Lexus keeps the reasons for these changes a secret even from their dealers, so I could not find out "why" for the change. But, I'm requesting that Lexus corporate allow my dealer to install the "31" trunk struts, as I'm fairly sure that the new ones have been "beefed up".
