38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 09/08/2023

There is a known issue in the form of a warranty policy bulletin and I believe a recall in canada for a faulty engine oil cooler line that was made of rubber and fails under heat (now replaced by metal lines). This happened to my daughter after a hot day and she pulled away from the driveway the next day. Almost all of the oil leaked out and we stopped the car and had it towed to a Lexus dealership. When it was inspected, it was confirmed this was the issue, and there was a noise in the engine. I have a concern that further engine problems may have resulted in a loose bearing needing compete replacement. This has yet to be confirmed, but seems consistent with the many discussion boards that mention this exact issue.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 07/15/2023

On Saturday July 15, 2023, at between about 8:00 and 8:30 a. M. Cdst the vehicle was parked overnight in a garage, spontaneously caught fire and burned and was a total loss. There was a smell I would associate with an electrical fire. People reported hearing a car alarm and a "popping sound" before the fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and had the car towed out of the garage of a condominium association. Fire damage to property (except the subject car) was minimal but there was extensive smoke. In my opinion based on this incident, electric/hybrid cars should not be parked indoors.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

When driving, the car engine will randomly accelerate or race. The car does not physically go faster, but the engine revs at a high speed which is very scary. It will continue to accelerate while your foot is off the gas until you either press back down the gas pedal or come to a full stop. The car engine revs extremely loud making the driver feel like the car is going to keep going. I have had the car for 15 months and it continues to get worse. I have taken the car 3 times to the Lexus in freehold NJ when I first bought it to fix this issue. They were able to replicate it in my car but said the tests came back normal and told me this was a "normal reaction" due to the car being a hybrid. The diagnosis was that it was the battery discharging. I wrote to Lexus and the regional service manager, but they have all dismissed me. I filed a complaint with Lexus, but they also dismissed it. I just went on the Lexus forum site to find many people are now complaining about this issue. What is very interesting is that Lexus has now put out an "unintended acceleration (ua) form which asks questions about this issue. Lexus knows about this major issue but has yet to do anything about it. The other day I approached a few kids playing in the road and started to slow down only to have the car loudly accelerate/rev as I was approaching the children. Very unnerving. . . Something definitely is wrong and needs to be addressed. I was hoping you could help since the manufacturer refused to.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 03/30/2023

There is a known issue with the Toyota/Lexus 2gr-fe (w/ towing package). The engine is present in many v6 model year suvs 2007-2011. The defect is with the oil cooler return lines for this engine equipped with the towing package. The issue is that a manufacturing defect with these hoses can occur slowly over the life of the vehicle or suddenly without warning. The rubber hoses used are susceptible to extreme and numerous hot-cold cycles due to a hot nearby catalyst. Over time or suddenly, the hoses will begin to deteriorate due to the hot-cold cycles causing accelerated wear on the defective rubber lines. This may manifest as a small amount of oil seepage at first, or may have no warning signs. When total failure of the hoses does occur, it is typically catastrophic and nearly immediate. Once these hoses do fail, oil will pour out of a low point in the oil cooler, emptying the engine of oil within 2 minutes. If the vehicle is driving while the failure occurs, within minutes oil pressure is completely lost from the crankcase, and catastrophic engine wear/failure will occur, sometimes within just seconds. Often, the engine oil light will not illuminate until several minutes after the hose has failed, typically too late to stop the engine in time. If a moving vehicle experiences catastrophic engine failure due to no oil, the likelihood of a major safety issue is increased, due to the likelihood of a fire, hot oil pouring onto the roadway, and a loss of power steering control due to loss of engine power. Toyota released a TSB to address this issue, dated 2011, in which they acknowledged the poor design can lead to leaking and failing hoses. In most cases, the service is performed at the full cost of the customer (over $600). It seems millions of these vehicles have not been addressed, and are still on the road, Toyota should be compelled to resolve this defect and hazard at no customer cost under an extended recall.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 02/28/2023

- uknown: 2023 Rx 500h performance hesitates or stalls when gas is applied to accelerate. When vehicle final start moving after 2-4 seconds, engine revs really high. This is believed to be an issue in the power train and specifically transaxle issues and ecu programming issues. More on this issue can be found on Lexus service bulletin record id #4807268. Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. - yes, with the vehicle stalling out in cross traffic, it has almost caused me, my wife and child to get t-boned on multiple instances. Lexus corporate and the Lexus dealer had been made aware of this concern on multiple occasions. - no, dealer has not been able to reproduce after multiple reviews. I do have video proof of the car doing this taken after final attempt for Lexus to review. This video has been sent to Lexus corporate and Lexus dealer. - vehicle has been inspected by Lexus dealership as a representative of Lexus corporate. My dealer has looked at it multiple times and can never duplicate and will not help. I worked with Lexus directly and also were not able to help. Lexus corporate has now turned my case over to their lemon law department for review on 7/8/24 due to this issue and many more issues with car. I provided requested information to Lexus corporate lemon department on 8/12/24 and have not hear back as of 10/24/24. - unknown: issue occurs few time a week since purchased the car on 2/4/2023, but do not recall first experience. Issue occurs more after the car has been sitting for a while on a hot day or not drove in a few days, and will stall out mostly on a left hand turn. The issue feels like the battery is dead and the gas engine has to take over for it causing a lag. When the engine does finally take over it seems to rev really high too. After it does it once or in some cases twice at the beginning of the drive it is typically okay the rest of the drive.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 11/23/2022

Oil poured out under vehicle under right side passenger side from oil cooler line overnight in my garage. Lexus stated that I was lucky that this did not occur while driving as oil would have blown completely out due to the pressurized line and damaged the engine. There was no warning lights on. I backed the car out of the garage leaving a stream of oil and discovered the problem. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership as I never saw anything like this. According to Lexus service representative this is a known defect and has been upgraded by Lexus to a solid metal line at failure only but only for a specific amount of time. (evidently the vehicle was manufactured with a part metal and part rubber coolant line that split on the rubber portion of the line. ) seems to me that this should have been a recall to prevent major damage to the vehicle and during driving hazard to consumer as the vehicle would stopped completely as oil would be blown out completely. My cost was estimated and paid for at $695. 00. I think this should have been a recall.

Failure Date: 10/12/2022

On [xxx], my wife, [xxx] , was driving our Lexus Rx 350 when she noticed engine smoke without any prior notifications from the vehicle. Concerned for her safety, she pulled over and contacted geico for assistance. Geico arranged for the vehicle to be towed to motor city Lexus, a trusted Lexus dealership in bakersfield. Once we the dealership performed a diagnosis they advised that the issue involved coolant being leaked into the engine that caused the smoke with in result caused the engine blow head gasket. After doing some research I saw an article from consumer reports about some Lexus and Toyota suvs doing the exact same thing which made me decide to wrote about this incident. I am including the link regarding the report [xxx] . Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 10/04/2022

Oil leaked substantially while driving on the highway. As we were slowing down on wb I-94 due to construction, our red oil light was on, and then flashing. The car was driven for about 1. 5 miles from the initial lit to a safe location (local Honda dealership) where it was determined that the vehicle was no longer drivable. Engine light and all other warning lights were also on as we arrived in the Honda service garage. Upon inspection, 4 quarts of oil were lost and Lexus service center later confirmed that the rubber oil cooler tubes were broken and had to be replaced by the metal ones. Both Lexus service & Lexus corp had confirmed that the defective parts for Lexus Rx350 year models 2007 - 2011 were installed. They later issued a campaign to have them replaced with the metal tubes. The incident was quite a safety hazard to us (my wife and I) because had we maintained our normal highway speed, there could have been a catastrophic engine failure due to low or no oil. If this happened at night, we would have been stranded on the highway and in the worst case scenario, the engine would have blown up and could have caused fire. After filing a complaint with Lexus corp and seeking reimbursement for the repairs, Lexus refused to accept the claim, saying that my car was out of warranty. They claimed that notices were sent out, but we never received such notices. The initial representative said the notice was sent out September 2014, but the case manager later said it was October 2015 (very inconsistent here). Meanwhile, I had another recall service done on April 4, 2016, which overlapped with their extended warranty campaign period (01. 31. 16 to 03. 02. 19) for these defective tubes, but we were never notified about this. The fact that Lexus did not issue a recall campaign for this is erroneous. Sudden catastrophic engine failures or potential failures is definitely a safety concern. This issue has been documented widely online and is prevalent within the Lexus community.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 06/03/2022

Oil cooler line ruptured while driving. Lexus issued an extended warranty to 12/31/2016 on the oil cooler line. Lexus sent an advisory letter to owners of record several months prior to our purchase. Our dealer: rohrich Lexus, did not inform us of the problem when purchased 09/2014. Nor did they address the problem when they serviced the vehicle in 08/16, an oil change. Now we have $500 plus in repair costs for the oil cooler line replacement which could have been avoided if rohrich service department had advised us of the extended warranty that covered our vehicle. The oil cooler line was rubber and the fix was a metal line.

My awd check system keeps going on and off every few days. I took it to mavis who gave me codes and stated that there is a TSB found to the issues my vehicle read. 53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 12/04/2021

I have never had any issues with the oil and this car has had all of its oil changes on time and regular. Last evening I was driving home and the low oil pressure light came on. Within moments I started hearing a knocking noise. I parked the car cause I was at home at that time and I checked the next morning and there is no oil in the car now. There's oil all underneath the undercarriage. I looked online and found a story of another guy this happened to and it ended up being an oil cooler pipe. I guess these are rubber and there's a recall warranty notice on these. My car has not been driven since I parked it. Please advise.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 10/08/2021

The car stalls while I'm driving, and it almost caused a traffic. Accident, I have been trying to contact my local Lexus dealer and they keep hanging up the phone when I try to call and make appointments.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 09/29/2021

My car exploded- huge fire. I was not driving- it had been parked. The fire marshal indicated that it was an electrical problem located near the battery. There we no indicators of any issues. I only had liability on the car- so I am out of luck. But the nyfd inspected. It happened on Wednesday 9/29/21. Was inspected on 9/30.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 09/08/2021

We were 2 hours into a 9 hour drive when I noticed smoke in the rear view mirror. I continued to drive as I thought it may have been coming from another vehicle. I drove to the nearest gas station (about 3 mi) and pulled in. Upon exiting the vehicle, we found the back window and the entire back of the SUV covered in oil. There were no warning lights and no engine noises. We checked the oil and it was so low that it did not register on the dip stick. We added 2 quarts of oil which then registered on the tip of the dip stick. We then added another quart of oil and drove to a nearby service station (1/2 mi). The mechanic could not diagnose the problem since he couldn't put it on his lift (it was occupied by another vehicle). He contacted two other service stations in the area and found one less than a mile away that had a lift open. We added 2 more quarts of oil and drove to the next service station. The mechanic put the vehicle on the lift and quickly found the problem - a pin hole in the oil line. He was able to find a replacement part (not the original part as it had been discontinued) and get us up and running the same day. We were very fortunate that I noticed the smoke - if I had not noticed it and continued to drive (we were 10 minutes from driving over a bridge tunnel) it could have been catastrophic. We finished the 7 additional hours of driving that day and after being gone for a week, have now returned home (another 9 hours). The mechanic told me the part had been recalled, but when I searched this sight, I found lots of similar reports - but no recall. Coincidentally, I had had the oil changed 4 days before beginning this trip. It is surprising that there are so many reports of this incident, but no recall by Lexus.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 09/07/2021

I have had my 2009 Rx350 serviced regularly at Lexus of maplewood. When I had it routinely serviced earlier this week, the service representative told me that I need to replace the oil cooler hoses with updated pipes and gaskets to prevent an oil hose failure that could cause major engine damage. The cost of this repair will be $595. 90. In researching this problem online, it appears that this risk was identified early in the life of this generation of vehicle and the hose was replaced with another rubber hose. Now, the service rep is recommending replacement of the hose again, this time with a metal pipe. There are multiple reports online of 2009 Rx350 owners who have experienced the leaks and loss of oil, oftentimes resulting in major engine repair. My vehicle only has 111,000 miles on it. I reported the problem to Lexus, but they claim the vehicle is beyond any extended warranty. A major spontaneous oil leak and subsequent engine freeze up while driving on the freeway could be catastrophic.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 08/17/2021

Driving along normally, started seeing a flashing "low oil pressure warning". Within seconds, engine started revving uncontrollably and would not make power. Was able to coast into a parking lot. On dipstick inspection, engine had lost all engine oil and entire car was covered in oil. Suspect that oil spilled out at some point on the road- danger to other cars. Vehicle was towed to local dealer, diagnosed as a blown oil cooler pipe, causes all engine oil to spray out in seconds. This is a known problem, addressed in Lexus technical service bulletin l-sb-0154-11 and a recalled part in canada, but not in the us. Factory part is a rubber oil line that deteriorates and bursts, Lexus has an upgraded medal line available. Service invoice can be updated once service completed if needed.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 08/10/2021

Was driving into the garage (coasting) very slowly and as I was preparing to step on brake the car revved forward unsuspectedly - I have a video on my ring door bell and you can hear the engine then the squealing of the automatic braking system. I destroyed the adult 3 wheel bicycle that was stored along the wall but that helped the vehicle from crashing through the bricks - I remember shouting “what the hell is happening”. After much research as I knew I did not depress the accelerator in error - I found that this has been a common occurrence with Toyota and Lexus products. I am a very careful driver and I have replayed the incident in my head over and over. I presently dont have the insurance and repair information readily available.

Engine hesitation. Sometimes the engine suddenly slows down or like lossing it’s power while running on the freeway or making a turn or going uphill . This is a very scarry situation everytime it does .

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Lexus RX

Failure Date: 07/18/2021

Something had broken causing oil draining out of the car while driving on the highway. The car lost power and I pulled over immediately and shut off the engine. I opened the hood and saw nothing wrong, however when I checked the oil, there was no oil. I then proceeded to look under the car and there was oil all over the under carriage. I then did a walk around and found oil all over the back side. Me and my family were stranded while we waited for a tow truck. We had the tow truck take the Rx350 to the local Lexus (kuni in denver) dealership where this car has been serviced all its life. When I received the initial call from the service department, he had said he is 99% sure this is the oil cooler pipe. He then said this is a known defect in the design of this part. When I googled "rx350 oil cooler pipe" numerous complaints came back. The initial design is rubber and now they installed one that is metal. This could have been fatal if we had traffic near us. Also this could have major damage to the engine. This should have been recalled however Lexus decided not to and just call it a warranty notice. Even with all the information out there about this highly defective part, the dealership would not cover the cost and told us to directly deal with Lexus. If anyone is reading this, and you have not change out this part, I would get this done! it is not an if this will happen, it is when it will happen. The design of this pipe is elementary and will fail. I thought Lexus being a luxury manufacturer would take more care with their customers! but as you can see, they are not.

Failure Date: 07/13/2021

Vehicle has been reported before for similar problems. This time, no power, severe stumbling, lurching. Check engine light comes on along with warning indicators that the electrical systems have failed. Lexus notified again and vehicle will be towed to dealership. This car is dangerous and life threatening as we were in traffic with no power. Dealer did not notify us of any problems prior to sale but this car qualifies as a lemon under az law. Additionally, if other Lexus owners are having this problem, they should immediately stop using the vehicle and park it before someone gets injured/killed.

Failure Date: 06/30/2021

Oil cooler line, rubber elbow potential failure. No notice letter from Lexus received warning of their TSB: pol. 14. 02 (NHTSA#: 10056509). Voluntary extended warranty coverage is expired now and no support from Lexus offered. Rubber elbow cannot be simply replaced as the newly desigend replacement is a metal elbow. Entire assembly must be replaced. Extremely expensive. Unacceptable for a flaw to endanger the engine, and possibly to cause a fire with oil spray onto a hot engine/exhaust.

Failure Date: 06/28/2021

Oil cooler high pressure line, rubber elbow, pin hole oil leak/spray. TSB: pol. 14. 02 (NHTSA: 10056509). Leaked oil out with check engine light/low oil pressure warning just as I arrived home. Line of oil in driveway. Diagnosed leak from this rubber elbow. One quart of oil left in oil pan. After review of NHTSA website (and many, many google hits) found this to be a well known problen by Lexus. No recall ever issued.
