Lexus RX300 owners have reported 12 problems related to transmission slip out of gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While entering a freeway onramp the transmission slipped out of gear. I tried to accelerate but there was no power the engine just revved. The transmission reingaged as I was pulling to the shoulder so I continued my trip home. Later on the same drive home, at an interchange between freeways it happened again but this time the transmission didn't re-engage and there was almost a deadly multiple car accident. It was towed to a transmission specialist who had to replace the transmission. Soon after replacement I was on another trip and I attempted to accelerate to pass a car, the transmission slipped and I barely avoided being in a deadly auto accident on the freeway with a big rig. On this same trip I almost lost my life three times due to this identical occurrence. It is absolutely unacceptable and unforgivable that Toyota hasn't taken responsibility for this manufacturing error and announced a complete recall and replacement of all transmissions for this year, make and model of vehicle. If, I keep this car and I have an accident due to their manufacturing negligence action may be taken.

2002 Lexus Rx300 automatic transmission issue. Have been reading on the internet as well as this site (16 total complaints about transmission/power train for this particular vehicle). Just this morning, my wife (principal driver of this vehicle) tried to put the vehicle in reverse (located inside our home garage). The vehicle will not reverse. From reading other complaints, it seems that this is now a more common issue with this model of Lexus than ever before? the danger involved in having to play with a gear shift; shifting back and forth from park to reverse, or reverse to drive, just to move into gear is a hazard and danger for a vehicle particularly housed in a garage. I'm also learning that others have experienced this model of Lexus SUV jumping out of gear and locking up the axles while the vehicle is in motion. Lexus is not an inexpensive vehicle, and owners should expect more from a vehicle of this price range and overall quality otherwise.

1999 Lexus Rx300 which had transmission service on March 17th 2011 at henessey Lexus in dacula georgia, began to make a whirring sound and slip out of gear while driving on interstate 85 north on Saturday July 9th 2011. I immediatly pulled off onto the shoulder of the interstate to check the fluid and it showed full on the dip stick. On Monday July 11th 2011 the Rx300 in question was taken to the same dealership which performed the service of the transmission on March 17th 2011, and they informed me that I would need a new transmission costing upward of $4500. After further investigation I have found there are thousands of complaints regarding the Rx300 model years 1999-2001 describing the exact same drive train failure. It is apparent that Lexus is aware of this issue and has failed to issue any type of warning to its consumers of impending transaxle failure due to an inferior shifting apparatus. As stated earlier service was performed on my Rx300 and any mention of impending problems were absent. As a consumer I feel that it is the responsibility of Lexus to warn its customers of any problems which may arise due to inadequate equipment. Below are links to other websites which list complaints of the exact transaxle failure. A recall for repairs should be issued as this is a serious vehicle failure. If I had been informed of this impending issue costly repairs and damage certainly would have been avoided. Us. Lexusownersclub. Com/forums/index. . Read more...

2001 Lexus Rx300 shifted out of drive into neutral while going down the freeway at 60mph (redlining the engine) and almost causing an accident from behind. Apparently this car has a known defect with the transmission. The vehicle shifted into reverse while in the drive position shortly thereafter. The transmission is now having to be rebuilt for $3000 that we dont have. The car shifting into reverse while in the drive location scared the heck out of us. Thank god no one was behind us!!!.
In oct 2009, noticed a slip 2000 Rx300 transmissions 30mph. Would not slip out of 1st gear so when 5 mph to get home. Have Rx300 towed to mechanic. Transmission failed at 140,000 miles. Replaced with rebuilt transmission.

Rx300 car either won't go into gear or jumps out of gear. It has occurred several times and many many reports on owner sites transmission failure. The latest incident left myself and my 4 year old son stranded in a parking lot in low teens weather. It also jumped out of gear once while driving. I'm afraid to drive the car.
The contact owns a 2000 Lexus Rx300. While driving 55 mph, the transmission began losing power and slipping out of gear. Eventually, the vehicle would not move at all and had to be towed. The diagnosis was transmission failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
First, the car would not shift into reverse. Then, after attempting several times, the car violently jerked me into reverse and I almost crashed. After backing up, I shifted into drive, but locked up on me again. After revving the accelerator and trying different gears, finally jerked me and children forward into drive. Initially, Lexus "supposedly" fixed the problem by replacing O2 sensor, but problem recurred in June again. Since the problem could not be duplicated at Lexus shop, they gave me my car without any repair. Then, a more serious occurrence happened in mid July when the gear got stuck while driving. I was driving about 30 mph when gear got stuck, shifted to neutral, then violently jerked me and kids forward and into drive again. Children and I were very frightened. This is a safety issue because not only are you dropped out of gear into neutral while car is in motion, but then you are suddenly jerked forward into drive. To make it worse, its frequency is erratic so you just hope this doesn't happen on the freeway. According to many online blogs (especially edmunds. Com), it is a common problem that 1999-2001 Lexus has but will not acknowledge. Mostly happens at about 65,000 miles. Don't understand why there hasn't been a recall already. Are we waiting for there to be a fatality or serious injury for this to receive attention?.
Transmission constantly slips out of gear or fails to engage reverse gear from park. Car slows suddenly or fails to accelerate because of transmission problem. Transmission may need to be replaced.
First failure happened during a left turn at a busy multi-lane intersection. Transmission dropped out of gear instead of shifting leaving me powerless at a very vulnerable time. The vehicle had sufficient momentum that I managed to drift up and over an adjacent curb. I was at the mercy of alert drivers in the intersection at the time. A Lexus rebuilt transmission was installed by a Toyota mechanic. After 12 months and many attempts at getting the engine light to remain extinguished I was advised today by Lexus of calgary that the second transmission is now failing. The first transmission and now this one are failing to shift when required most, recently while attempting to accelerate during a lane change. It is dangerous to not have power when you need it most.
Lexus Rx300-have owned car since beginning 1999-never had a problem with car except normal tune ups and new brakes-however, that all changed September 2004. Yes, I've had the car 6 six years but with only 68,000 miles on the car which is considered low mileage use. While traveling to san diego to take my granddaughter back home from my current home at the time in aliso viejo, California my auto while on the I-5 just completely dropped out of gear-I had enough speed going that I was able to get off the freeway and came to a stop at the camp pendleton marine base front gates. The soldiers were able to push my car behind their station gate until aaa could send a truck to tow me and for my son to pick up my granddaughter there. My transmission was completely gone and cost me over $4,000. 00 to get it fixed. I was told by the repairman that the planetary gear is what broke but that Lexus has had to update the planetary gear for my model and year 4 (four) times. It sounds to me that Lexus knows that they had a problem with this main gear and I want to know why there was never a recall to have it fixed. Lexus is rated tops so why would my transmission go out at only 68,000 miles? I had no choice but to have it repaired immediately because I was moving to florida in two weeks and didn't have the time or wheels to take my complaint to the dealer. Is there any recourse since the planetary gear was clearly defective?.
After having my transmission replaced by Lexus of roseville, California the remanufactured transmission from Lexus dropped out of gear during moving traffic, endangering my family with the loss of drive in heavy traffic.
