1 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 03/06/2018

I have been driving my vehicle around and noticed my steering wheel has become "loose". The power steering fluid was leaking, but I wasn't able to pinpoint the problem. I filled it back up with anti-leak power steering fluid, but a couple months later I had it checked out because the steering became noticeably looser. Rack and pinion is in need of replacement. My vehicle has been serviced from brand new since 2007 and only has 75,000 miles on it. My vehicle is out of warranty, but this seems to be a common problem with the manufacturing of the vehicle (based upon other consumer complaints). Normal city and highway driving.

3 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 06/23/2017

The rack and pinion is leaking fluid (atf is used for power steering) from the passenger side dust boot indicating a worn out seal at only 70,000 miles. The only fix is to remove and replace the rack and pinion system at a substantial cost. I believe this is a major design defect with this rack and pinion system because I have other vehicles with well over 200 k miles and no problems.

4 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 01/02/2016

My power steering fluid is leaking and I need to replace the rack and pinion. I only have 56,000 miles on the car. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about this and believe there is a defect. The problem was caught before I lost steering capability.

5 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 12/08/2015

2012 power steering rack failed. Leaking at the rubber seal boot on right side under vehicle. Used a rebuilt part to replace it. 2015 December, power steering fluid leaked out of fluid casing all over the ground. I pulled off of the toll rd because of the noise. Took it to Lexus and diagnosed power steering rack needs to be replaced again because rubber seal boot is leaking again. They have stopped using rebuilt and now use new kit to repair. They want me to pay for half the repair. There are thousands of complaints about this issue with Lexus and other Toyota vehicles which use the same part. If my car loses all the fluid before I get it repaired, especially if on the freeway there could be a fatal accident. Lexus has taken months to return my calls in order to get this repaired. I finally go a return call from customer service on may 4th. Will not get on the freeway until this is resolved.

6 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

Took to dealer for regular oil change. The 25 point check - right side rack and pinion leaking, right rear strut leaking front brakes low battery fail test from a battery I received from Lexus in 2012. Brake fluid flush need 4 wheel alignment. The corporation needs to do a recall I've researched to many of these vehicles are being cited with this rack and pinion. They recalled prior years why not the 2009 and up? I am to receive assistance with the labor, but as we know labor is the bulk of charges.

7 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 07/16/2015

I took my Rx350 for regular service and asked for the steering to be checked since it made noise and did not feel secure when making hard or sharp turns and when parking in tight spots. I was informed that my rack & pinion assembly was leaking power steering fluid and it could be hazardous if not addressed. It needed to be replaced. The Lexus estimate was $2000! given the age, I had less than 80k mostly local and highway miles on the SUV. When I researched cost estimates I found that this was a common occurrence. I believe Lexus should accept responsibility and recall these vehicles and reimburse the owners who had to pay out of pocket! after I saved up to pay for the repair the cost was $2058. 11!.

8 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

While have my car serviced, the shop informed me that the steering rack was leaking fluid and needed to be repaired at a cost (parts & labor) of $1562. This seems outrageous to me given that the car has about 33k miles on it. When I check the blog on arfc. Org, it appears that this is a common problem. Why has Lexus not been required to issue a recall for this problem?.

9 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2009 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 03/21/2015

I bought the vehicle in for service of an oil change on March 21, 2015. I was informed by my advisor that the power rack & pinion assy. Is leaking fluid. The entire assy. Has to be replaced at a cost of $1, 900. 00 (really). If the fluid is leaking that would affect my steering the vehicle and turning (god forbid). The vehicle is only 6 years old how can this possibly be. Due to the potential safety hazard I am concerned about driving this vehicle with my family. I called customer service and reported the matter was informed that isn't a recall on the part. The manufacturer should be held liable for this safety hazard and defect of part. I am asking for assist in this pressing (dangerous) matter. I will contact any one I know that is looking to purchase this model vehicle. I will let them know the circumstances of this model vehicle. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ms. Brown.

10 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 01/19/2015

I took my car in for a routine service; when I went to pick it up I was told that the rack and pinion was leaking, there was a tear in the boot and it was leaking fluid, after being quoted $1800 for parts and labor I declined the repair. I find it hard to believe that a 7 year old car with majority of highway miles would have an issue with the rack and pinion going bad. When I came home I did some research and found that this seems to be a common problem with the second generation RX. In my family, majority of our cars are toyotas & Lexus; we have a corolla, 2 camry's, sienna, highlander, is350, Rx350. One camry has almost 200kmiles, the corolla has over 150k miles. We've owned 2 other corollas, es250, celica, I've owned other brand cars too and have driven over 150k miles and never had a problem with the rack and pinion boot tearing. This is not the first time I had an issue with the RX, the last time there was an issue with a (motor) oil line bursting, the oil line that runs from the oil cooler - thank god nothing happened, the car made it home safely home (but no low oil light came on) and we had it towed to the dealership and the repairs were covered under warranty. Was told by a mechanic that the oil line bursting was a common problem, and that the newer RX models the pipe was replace with metal pipe. In my opinion about the rack and pinion, it's definitely a safety issue - the steering oil could potentially leak onto the exhaust and catch fire, and if all the power steering fluid leaks out one may not realize it and may not be able to steer the car out of harms way. We've owned so many Toyota/Lexus cars and we've never had any problems, we've always been an believer of Toyota/Lexus, but this RX has got me worried. I hope that this is not a sign of things to come. Will be thinking really hard about Toyota/Lexus when it comes time to buy another car.

11 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

The rack and pinion steering blew up spewing power steering fluid all over the undercarrage. Loss of the power steering resulted do to lack of fluid. No prior warning of any leaks or poor performance from the steering. No noise indicating that there may have been a leak. Fortunately, no accidents was caused. The oil got all over the catalitic converter and could have resulted in a fire. This is a very unsafe condition that could have been catastrophic.

12 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 09/22/2014

When I brought my car at the dealer for service, I was told the power steering fluid was leaking and therefore the rack and pinion steering assembly would need to be replaced at a cost of $1602. 44. My car has low mileage and so for a luxury vehicle, I thought this type of replacement this soon was ridiculous. I have researched through the internet and found same problem with this car. This type of luxury car at 81,000 miles should not need this replaced. Despite with all complaints and same problem with this Lexus 2008 Rx350 regarding the power steering rack assembly, Lexus should recall this part for replacement with no cost to owner.

13 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

When I was at the dealer for my routine oil change, I was told the powering steering fluid was leaking and therefore the rack and pinion steering would need to be replaced at a cost of $1790. My car is out of warranty but low mileage and so for a luxury vehicle, I thought this type of replacement this soon was ridiculous. I have 2 friends with the exact same car and same year and they both had the same problem and had to have theirs replaced as well. One was under warranty, one was not. I called to complain to Lexus corporate and was offered $700 to help pay half of the repair. This type of luxury car at 65,000 miles should not need this replaced.

14 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

Leaking fluid and unusual noise in steering components . I took the vehicle to the dealer and had to have steering rack and shaft replaced for a cost of $2,207. 00. I asked service representative if this was covered by any type of extended warranty and he said no. I indicated I was a Toyota driver since 1970 and said that not only had this never happened to me on a vehicle before, I had never heard of this issue. He told me it was quite common!! as I had bought the vehicle used in naples, florida, I looked up the repair history in the Lexus data base and imagine my surprise when I discovered these parts had also been replaced at 52,847 miles. I wrote to Lexus USA and got a call stating the standard line that the repair was beyond the 1 year warranty period etc. To Toyota motors and its Lexus division, I say that you have let a 40 year customer down big time. I never had any major problems with my toyotas and now this when I thought I had up scaled to Lexus. I have lost faith in the Toyota brand and I say "shame to you Lexus".

15 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 05/28/2013

When I was at the dealer for my routine oil change, I was told the powering steering fluid was leaking and and therefore the rack and pinion steering would need to be replaced at a cost of $1600. My car is out of warranty but low mileage and so for a luxury vehicle, I thought this type of replacement this soon was ridiculous. This type of luxury car at 55,000 miles should not need this replaced. It seems like a manufacturing defect and Lexus should do a recall to fix this problem for all 2008 Lexus Rx350.

16 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 05/24/2013

During routine car maintenance, I was notified by the Toyota technician that the rack and pinion assembly was leaking power steering fluid and needed to be replaced in order to maintain safety operation. The mileage at the time of failure was 86,817. The technician stated that the only fix for this issue was to remove and replace the entire rack and pinion assembly at a cost of $1,700. I believe that this is a design defect and should have been recalled by Toyota, given the number of failures I have found reported on the NHTSA website. It appears to be a common problem with other Lexus Rx350 owners from various years.

17 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Lexus RX350

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

During my annual state vehicle inspection conducted by a Lexus dealership, service technicians indicated that one of the boots on the power steering rack had a hole/tear and was leaking power steering fluid, and there was an additional leak from a seal in the power-steering gear assembly. The estimate and final cost to replace the entire rack and pinion system was $1600+, and I found myself at the mercy of the dealership, who said I would "fail" my state inspection if I chose not to have them make this repair. I have since read online where numerous other Rx350 and related Lexus vehicle owners have experienced the same or similar steering rack failures and seal leaks, and there appears to have been at least 1 Lexus recall campaign on a non-rx350 vehicle for this issue. Unfortunately this was not a warranty repair for me, and since many other Lexus vehicle owners have documented this same issue (and service technicians are quite familiar with the problem), it would seem that Lexus would take the high road and commence a recall campaign for vehicles already on the road with this problem, and would correct or eliminate this problem for future vehicles now that it's a known, documented issue. Unfortunately Lexus does not appear willing/able to take the high road on this one.

18 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Lexus RX350
