1 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 1998 Lincoln Continental

Failure Date: 11/16/2010

As I was backing the car up the tie rod/steering assembly disengaged (unscrewed) from the rack&pinyon (passenger side) causing loss of steering. The tie rod I stress again unscrewed from the rack. I was fortunate this took place at a slow speed. I feel that if this occurred at highway speeds it could have resulted in a serious or fatal crash. My mechanic replaced the tie rods on both sides with new ones and I have the old part on hand. Looks like the safety pin that holds the tie rod to the rack wore and allowed the tie rod to unscrew its self from the rack.

5 Steering Tie Rod Assembly problem of the 1997 Lincoln Continental

Failure Date: 04/08/1999

Tie rod ends replaced, front end realigned, steering making noise and dealer claimed that steering rack needs replaced to cost $500. 00, dealer claimed repairs not subject to warrantly nor recall. Upon research, I find that Lincoln has issued service bulletins for both defects. I paid for the work to replace the tie rod ends and have not have had the steering work done as I think it should be Lincoln's responsibility. These failures were at low miles 51,408 and because of the service bulletins, Lincoln is aware of these problems.
