While driving my 2002 Lincoln Ls 3. 9v8 vehicle, I have been fighting my steering wheel to keep my car driving straight. I took the car to a local shop where I was told that ball joint bolt was lose, where he also pointed out the looseness. (bolt located behind the rotor right at the bottom of the control arm) today while driving, the steering took me into some grass but no damage was done to the vehicle. I have seen that this has been a problem in 2000 and 2001 so I wasn't sure if the same problem occurred in my 2002 but I feel very unsafe in the car especially commuting to work everyday on a busy freeway, fearful that the steering will give out at anytime and I would lose control of the vehicle.
2000 Lincoln Ls brought to the dealership to fix a problem with squeaking, still squeaks. They fixed right front control arm ball joint(so many Lincoln Ls 2000 still on the road with this problem, & no recalls for it?) why? now that I had the front right control arm ball joint replaced back in June, I have the same problem on front left side today, very expensive to fix. I've heard to many complaints about this same problem but no recall???? same problem now on front left side. Very dangerous!.
I have a 2000 Lincoln Ls, 6 months back took the car to dealership cause of squeaking noises, dealer fixed right control arm ball joint. . . . . . Two months later having same problem only on left side, I noticed it out of nowhere, the car started jerking to the other direction when the steering wheel was still straight. . . . Very scary when driving with family. . . . . . Why has there been no recall for this problem? they say my car is not apart of the recall, but im very afraid to keep driving the car, unsure of what will happen in the future. . . I notice alot of complaints with this same problem as the ball joint recall for 2000 Ls but lot of Lincoln Ls 2000 not on recall, why?.
The contact owns a 2001 Lincoln Ls. While driving 20 mph, the contact heard a screeching noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. Upon further inspection, he noticed that the rear driver's side wheel subframe was rusted, which caused the lower control arm to fail. The vehicle was towed and the tow driver observed that the opposite rear frame also failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the subframe was rusted out. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact would not provide compensation because the warranty was expired. The failure mileage was 76,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Lincoln Ls. While driving 65 mph uphill, the front passenger side tire detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the lower control arm on the passenger side was repaired. Six months later, while making a left turn, the front end of the vehicle dropped to the ground on the driver's side. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the knuckle on the driver side was replaced. The contact was advised to have the bushes on the lower control arm replaced as well. The VIN was not included in any recalls. The current mileage was 141,600 and failure mileage was 141,560.
The contact owns a 2001 Lincoln Ls. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle yanked to the left as if the contact had lost control. The dealer stated that the ball joints were defective and the control arm and knuckle needed to be replaced. An independent mechanic made the necessary repairs and stated that he was in danger of the wheel actually detaching if the repairs were not made. The failure and current mileages were less than 80,000.
My 2000 Lincoln Ls had a safety recall regarding the lower control arm and ball joint assembly in 12/2000. My vehicle was inspected by the dealer at that time but no repair or replacement was done. In 2004, I had the vehicle repaired for a similar issue with the suspension and steering but the dealer did not notify me of any recalls that could have affected the suspension. Yesterday, 10/08/2008, I became aware of the recall from a retail store after trying to get my car to align properly, after several failed attempts. I contacted Ford customer service at (800) 392-3673 to verify if there was a recall on my vehicle, in which they notified me that south pointe Lincoln Mercury inc at 945 motor city drive, colorado springs, CO 80905, inspected the vehicle in 12/4/2000 but did not repair or replace any parts on the vehicle. I now have an unsafe vehicle that wanders on the road with the potential of my entire front suspension assembly falling off if I drive the car.
Ball joint failure. My car was built in March of 2002 and they redesigned it in April to a larger ball joint which I learned by talking to a mechanic at the Lincoln dealer. He said that he fixes a lot of them built March and before but had never had to fix a post March 2002 car. I asked if he had ever upgraded it to the new design he said no, I asked if it was possible he said probably. I took the control arm off the car paid a machine shop $25 to machine it out from 14mm the old original size to 16mm the new redesigned size that Lincoln was putting in it after April and bought and installed a 16mm joint and that's all there was to it. All in all it only took a few hours (depending on the machine shop) and no special tools. If you have any mechanical ability you can do this job in your driveway, I did.
The contact's vehicle was involved in an accident on September 10, 2005. The vehicle hit a pot hole and heard something pop. The bolts of the control arm came off. She took vehicle to the dealership, and they replaced the steering knuckle. There was a second accident on October 19, 2005. The contact's husband was driving, not hitting anything, the control arm disconnected and the wheel on the left side of the vehicle caved in. She took vehicle back to the dealership for the second time. The dealership stated it was the control arm that was disconnected. There were no injuries during the accidents, and the passengers were wearing seat belts. The dealership ran the vehicle identification number to see if there were any recalls and there were no recalls. The contact has not contacted manufacturer.
2001 Lincoln Ls--front passenger wheel- there was alot of squeaking noises coming from the wheel before incident occurred. Yesterday, going through a drive-thru, I heard a pop. I got out and inspected the vehicle. The fender was resting on the tire. I called a tow truck and as he was trying to put the car on the tow truck, he showed me the damage. The bolt that holds the ball joint and control arm to the wheel came off. Please investigate this for me, and contact me when you find something out! thx.
Turned sterring wheel to change lanes. Left front balljoint snapped into causing left front wheel to turn sideways which caused loss of steering resulting in loss of control of vehicle causing vehicle to spin into and jump guardrail causing numerous amounts of damage. There was a recall in Dec. Of 2000 to chech torque of balljoints which I had completed the same month. I was definitly lucky I did not get killed as I ended up across two lanes of i75 . I have talked to several bodyshop managers and they each have had several instences of the balljoints snapping off on these vehicles. There seems to be structural defect here that Lincoln knows about, but is not doing anything to correct.
