1 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

The contact owns a 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii. The contact stated that the low beam headlights are known to burn out. The parts are no longer being manufactured so the only way to repair them is with a kit. The contact stated that this seemed like an expensive temporary remedy. In addition, the blend door, which opens the control for hot and cold air to defrost the windshield, does not work. The manufacturer was notified and stated that it was a safety issue. The dealer stated that this could be repaired at the contact's expense. The contact feels that he should not have to pay for the repair because it was caused by a manufacturer defect. There have been numerous complaints regarding this failure, but no decision on how the contact's vehicle will be repaired. He will wait until a recall is issued for this failure. The failure mileage was 61,000 and current mileage was 61,985. Updated 09/11/09 updated 09/15/09.

The blend door that controls the heat and air conditioning has stopped working and has rendered my heating / cooling system dysfunctional. 3 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 11/29/2004

When proceeding to turn on the heat in my car to defrost the windshield I discovered that my heat did not work, and that the a/c only blew cold air. This is a common problem in the Lincoln Mark Viii. The problem is caused by the blend door breaking over time. This has been an issue that Ford has known about; but, will not provide reimbursement for repairs needed. This repair is needed on almost all Mark Viii's after time.

4 Defogger problem of the 1998 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 10/06/2004

Heater/ac blender door-doors,fail to operate and or have "no" tempeture control, resulting in poor visiblity. Fogging etc, lack of defrosting and or a cold driver. . See previous 768368,768427,768529,768796,768173. 7689173,769183,769959,10003517,10005626,10023956,10075009,and now mine ! the only thing that changed is the cost of repairs by the dealer has gone up. I have a written estimate for( the dash has to be removed) $680. 00 labor. . Parts as found/ to be $38. 00,,$68. 00,,$5. 00,,$35. 00 and than maybe $350. 00 more for a plemum. . ($1,176. 00) I understand that Ford has replaced the parts with better versions as to materials that with stand the different temperatures it is subject too. This apparent lack of action by NHTSA is cause for concern as to your uninterest in the public safety not knowing how many other vehicles are out their with this hazardous defect. Help us,protect us ,,thank you.

5 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 11/30/2003

The a/c blend door module arm has failed on my car; this arm controls the amount of heat that is sent through the a/c, heating and defrost vents. If it does not operate properly, it will not remove frost or fog from the windshield, thus creating an unsafe condition.

6 Defogger problem of the 1998 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 02/10/2003

I have been reviewing the file on Lincoln mark 8's '97 & 98 and noticed that there were at least 10 complaints about the ventilation/heating/a/c blend door problem with this car. How many complaints does it take until you do something about it???? this is not only a very expensive repair to make, but failure, which can happen without warning, results in windshield fogging and inability of the system to clear the windshield . The Lincolns of distinction club, which supports mark 8's have had over 30-40 failures to date, some repeatedly. We now found that this failure happens in Lincoln town car/ taraus, etc, and that Ford has recently changed the replacement part designation. This strikes us as an acknowledgement that they are aware of the problem, but don't want to belly up to the bar and admit it . Can't your offices do anything or is this just a waste of our time trying to get a government agency to move on something that they claim they want to assist but ends in frustation of the citizens who take your charter seriously?.

7 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 12/31/2002

The blend door actuator which allows warm air to be directed to the windshield to defrost it broke at a very bad time. My windshield was fogged up on the interstate and when I put the climate control on defrost, all I got was cold air. Not a very safe set of conditions. I have since read that over 40 of my Lincoln car club members have had the same part break. Some report as many as 3 failures. The Lincoln dealership quotes the repair at approx. $700. 00. Ts.

8 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 11/20/2002

1997 Lincoln Mark Viii defroster/heater/ac blend door: the blend door on my 1997 Lincoln has malfunctioned. This is a very common problem on all Mark Viii Lincolns causing a malfunction in the windshield defroster. There is no heat applied to the windshield while attemting to defrost. Lincoln/Ford has ignored this very common problem and has offered no help. I am suggesting a recall be made on all 1997 and 1998 Lincolns.

12 Defogger problem of the 1998 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 10/12/2002

While driving down the road, because of the weather conditions, I noticed that the windshield was getting clouded over. Turned on my ha/c to defog the windshield but only cold air came out adding greatly to the windshield fogging. I was able to stop the car before running into opposite lanes of traffic since I couldn't see out the windshield. I got a cloth and wiped it clear to procede. Took to local dealer and was told that it was a common problem to these cars aswell as town cars in that the blend door actuator causes the door's arm to break in a set position. Thus if broke on hot setting you get only heated air- vice versa on a cold setting. It was an apparently poorly designed plastic item; however the charge to fix it with another similar arm would be over $500 because they have to take the dash off the car make the repair, though the part is lss than $35. 00. I could not afford the repair at that time, so a technician showed me how to lay under the dash and manually pull the door to either hot or cold. Dt.

Failure Date: 09/25/2002

The blend door actuator arm is a common failure on these cars. Due to their poor craftsmanship, they are almost guaranteed to fail eventually. Having no heat in the winter can be a serious safety issue. Not being able to defrost windows is the most obvious safety concern. This defect should be on a national recall. Dt.

19 Defogger problem of the 1997 Lincoln Mark Viii

Failure Date: 09/16/2002

The blend door lever is a common safety complaint with these cars. It is made of cheap plastic and many owners have replaced this part at considerable cost. My experience with this problem occurs on cold days with high humidity. The windows fog and when you turn on the defroster, cold air comes out and the fog remains or gets worse. This is a safety issue as how am I to see where I am driving with windows that are foggy? since this occurs while driving down the interstate am I to constantly clean the windows while driving. Thereby creating another safety issue? please look into this problem. It is a safety issue and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Dt.

The keys are not available at any dealership or afternarket. Imagine losing your keys in a strange town. It took the dealer 5 days to replace the key they lost. As for the blend door, go to the site markviii. Org and there are many complaints about this componant that is only $30. 00 but costs $800. 00 to replace due to the labor to get at the part. With as many failures the dot needs to do something ASAP about this. Dt.

26 Defogger problem of the 1998 Lincoln Mark Viii

The part failure is a cracked plastic arm actuator attached to the motor that controls the flow of air to the windshield defroster. When the part cracked, the blend door motor is not able to direct air to the windshield defroster. I had the part replaced by a local Lincoln dealer (they had to remove the entire dash board to replace the blend door motor and arm - not sold separatly) this year. It is a very dangerous defect, and it occurs without warning. Mr.

27 Defogger problem of the 1998 Lincoln Mark Viii

The on-board computer indicates that the "drivers door is ajar". The sign does not go out when the door is opened and closed again. When door locks are depressed, they pop up again and the doors will not lock at all. The only operable setting of the heater blower motor is high fan/ the headlight assembly ballast is defective and the lowbeam setting is dim. It cannot be repaired by replacing the lamp.
