Letter from senator klobuchar on behalf of constituent re an air bag recall of his Lincoln Mkx (attn: cacje henderson). 2007 Lincoln mk - 70k. Smelled gasoline several times at different locations today. Further investigation revealed that gasoline is leaking from the seam of the gas tank. Have seen multiple complaints on multiple sites including NHTSA for 2007 Lincoln Mkx and the Ford edge(same gas tank assembly). The issue is occurring with these models around the same mileage. Ford needs to put out a recall on this item as it is a major safety concern and there should not be an issue with this part at this mileage.
After noticing same fuel leak under my car , I took them to Ford dealership for inspection. Their technician found that fuel tank is heavily corroded around weld on the rear side of the fuel tank, and that fuel leaks at that place when the fuel tank is full. He told me that tank should be replaced. After that I talked with Lincoln representative and she told me that Lincoln doesn't cover fuel tank replacement after 5 year warranty or 50000 miles.
2007 Lincoln Mkx caught fire. Consumer believes that it caught fire due to a gas tank issue on 2008 Lincoln Mkx vehicles with gas tank problems. The consumer stated she noticed fire coming from the rear of the vehicle and while doing so, she briefly left the roadway and hit a mailbox and school sign and ran into a ditch. The consumer turned the vehicle off and attempted to exit the drivers side door, but the flames were so intense, that her jacket caught on fire. The consumer immediately closed the door as flames were everywhere. The consumer eventually exited the passenger side and within seconds, the vehicle began making popping sounds and then it blew up. It had completely burned before the fire trucks arrived. The consumer believed the gas tank ruptured.
