40 Steering problem of the 2003 Lincoln Town Car

Failure Date: 07/17/2015

We have a fleet of Lincoln Town Cars used in a ground transportation service. The driver reported that "the steering felt (very) tight". Another car was dispatched to cover the livery, and the affected car was towed back to our facility. Our senior mechanic examined the car and the issue is the lower steering shaft assembly. It is severely corroded, and the "u-joints" contained in it are almost impossible to move. We contacted the dealer, provided the VIN, and was told there is no recall on this vehicle this is not a new fomoco problem, there have been several recalls of several other years (and models) for the very issue. It is the exact same part that has failed in several years of Town Car (and similar). They are playing game with recall status on this vehicle these cars (that all have the same steering shaft design) should be recalled the scope of this recall needs to be expanded.

41 Steering problem of the 2003 Lincoln Town Car

This vehicle has the same "hard steering" issues as our other Town Cars. The newer ones were recalled, but the 2003 & 2004 were not included in that recall. Recall 13s08 / NHTSA recall 13v385 Ford dealers could not do repairs timely. This is a working commercial vehicle. Bought parts from Ford and had independent mechanic perform repair. Ford/Lincoln refused to reimburse. I feel that in light of the fact that the repairs were performed, and that their representative dealers were not able to fit us in within a reasonable period of time, they should reimburse at least up to the amount they reimburse through dealers. The repairs were done 2 months ago and appear to be solid.

Consider including Town Cars in the latest Ford crown vic, merc gran marquis, marauder 500k car steering issue. While changing the oil on my 2003 Town Car one month ago, I found a heat shield from the exhaust manifold laying parallel to and on the steering shaft stuck between the shaft and the upper control arm support and vehicle frame. The bolts holding the shield as well as mounting tabs on the shield had rusted and broken off. Very scary to see since the universal joint midway on the shaft could have easily jammed on the shield while steering to the left I. E. Turning the steering wheel counter clockwise. The shield was easily removed from within the engine compartment without the use of tools. Thought you should know. Thank you.

March of 2013 while driving on interstate highway I notice the steering not responding properly, I drove carefully to my destination in florida and took car to dealer who stated it was the steering rack which I had them replace, car was returned and while it still was a bit hard to steer I figured it was a new part and had to break in, back home in new york I called the dealer in florida who stated the part was warrentied for 12,000 miles or one year and I could take it to any Ford dealer and it would be hornered, I took it to my local Ford dealer where they ran a dioinosis and stated it was a frozen steering shaft problem getting car back it still was not steering properly, so I went back yesterday and they had 2 service people test drive car, both acknowledged the car wondered and steering did not straighted out properly after turning, started talking about other parts it could be, now with over two thousand dollars in cost already I insisted it that since the car was fine and a pleasure to drive before the steering rack went bad that it had to be the rack, they seemed unconcerned and stated thet if they replaced the rack under warrenty that when they sent this part back to Ford and if their engeneer found it was not bad they would get billed for the new one, so here we are, a car that steers like it has no power steering and a dealer who don't seem to care, what do I do next except write to you,.
