Mazda CX-5 owners have reported 3 problems related to loud engine noise (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda CX-5 based on all problems reported for the CX-5.
Engine makes loud noises after driving and acts like it's exhausted. This always happens when park the car and get out of it. There is a slight burning smell (which I was told would wear off after the first couple hundred miles), but it's still doing this. It's like the engine over heated (which no indicator) and it needs to cool off. The smell is the most concerning part.

Transmission issue: I turned on the car in a parking lot and tmps and scsb code and the tire pressure lights came on. I had about 15k on the car and it was just a year old and due for it's service. I wrote down the codes and figured I would tell the dealership when I took it in for service. I drove a little ways and stopped at a light. The car started to make a loud noise and shudder. I drove through the light and pulled up to the stop sign. The tachometer revved up but the car wouldn't go anywhere. I made it to the stop sign, put on my flashers and put the car in park. I turned it off and turned it back on again. I was able to drive a few more feet then again the entire engine revved up again. Repeat this about 6 more times. I was able to make it the mile to my house doing the drive, stop, turn off, start again and repeat. I had it towed to the dealership. The dealership fixed the car and said it was the transmission and that Mazda was able to tell them how to fix it because they'd seen it before and it was a a "shift concern and software upgrade needed. " I'd really like to save someone else from going through this so I want to report it. If I'd been driving faster and the engine shut down like that, I could have had a serious accident. Has anyone else had this problem? also why wasn't this reported on any of the car/driver, consumer reports reviews. This is a serious issue and people should consider it before they buy the car. Mazda should fix the issue in the Cx-5 so that it doesn't happen.

I approached a traffic light, early in the morning on Nov 17, 2014; and just slowed my speed to turn right (did not make a complete stop) when I tried to accelerate my car, speed did not respond and was stuck between 10 to 30 mph. The engine was making a horrible noise, the tachometer was going crazy, got scared, so I pulled to the side of the road and shift gear to p, waited a minute and shift back to d, but car did not respond. Drove about a mile and decided to pull out and turn off my car for a few minutes an restarted fine. I took my car to the dealer the same day. They kept it for two days and said there was nothing wrong. On Feb 13, 2015 had the same problem again, but this time I was at a red light, when tried to accelerate, car did not respond stuck at 25 to 30 mph. I had to make a u turn, to be able to get to a parking lot. I parked and turned off engine, restarted the car and worked fine. I took my car to the dealer again, they kept it a few days and said there is nothing wrong. I do not feel safe driving my Mazda anymore, I was very lucky I did not have an accident the two times I had this problem! there is definitely something very wrong with the power train of this car.
