1 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2020

The contact owns a 2012 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the brakes failed to operate. The contact mentioned that the brakes gradually slowed down the vehicle and stop independently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that there was an unknown recall on the vehicle. The contact contacted riley Mazda (75 myrtle Ave, stamford, CT 06902, (203) 978-5780) and was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was informed of an extended warranty coverage however, the mileage had been exceeded. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 129,000.

2 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2020

While pulling into my garage at low speed, my power brakes failed. I had to practically stand on the break pedal to get the vehicle to stop, barely stopping before hitting the fridge in my garage. The vehicle was towed for service and the problem diagnosed as the failure of the brake vacuum booster.

3 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2020

I was driving home with the family after viewing some house. Every time I would step on the brake pedal I would hear a hissing from the brake. Been happening for about a month now but, with the pandemic going on I just don't have time to diagnose the problem. When I press on the brake it would stop like normal with air hissing. The next day the brake pedal would feel very hard to press down. Like as if you been pumping your brake when the car off and when you turn your car on the pressure would be released. Not today, it stayed hard and hard to stop. I had to press the brake very hard as if pressing the brake pedal all the way down to the floor to make the car stop. Just stopping at a red light, stop sign, off the highway, and traffic was a challenge. I'll eventually stop but in the middle of a intersection or in the back of a car. If I had to brake because someone turned in front of me, I would of just hit them full speed because my brake booster failure to produce enough pressure to engage my brakes to stop. The day the brake booster happen to failure completely is when we had a family trip down to the wisconsin dells over the July 4th weekend. Since brake booster wasn't a recall but an extended warranty and ended March 2015 or 90,000 miles. Mazada would charge me full price to get it fixed. I would not fell safe driving it to the dealer and mazada doesnt cover towing unless its within 3 years. So they'll tow anything in the 2017 and newer. 2012 mazada cx-9 with 112,500. Owned it for exactly 3 to dated.

4 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2019

As the car was being driven the breaks became hard and unless pressed very hard it keeps going. It doesn't go down at all. Assessment shows brake booster failure. It is weird other vehicle I had . . . A Toyota never failed. I can't drive it.

5 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2019

Brake booster failed. This is a known issue to Mazda. Mazda said to bring into dealer for assessment and consideration for goodwill warranty replacement. Dealer determined brake booster failed and Mazda then denied goodwill claim. I paid dealer to fix the issue. This is a major safety issue and should have been recalled, not granted an extended warranty.

6 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

So disappointed in NHTSA for not requiring Mazda to recall the brake booster failure! NHTSA's investigation into the brake booster failure was closed when Mazda agreed to an extended warranty for this manufacturing safety defect. Had the NHTSA pushed for a recall notice, we would have been alerted to this safety defect and could have had it repaired (it is known to fail around 62,000 miles). We contacted Mazda today about the warranty only to be told our vehicle warranty expired less than 3 months ago, resulting in Mazda's refusal to cover a known safety defect. Mazda's lack of commitment to resolving this safety issue is shocking. Nhtsa's acceptance of Mazda extending its warranty for this known safety issue is disheartening as well. A manufacturing defect is a manufacturing defect; the problem should have been addressed when it failed or, at the very least, recalled and replaced. A time limit should not have been an option for a safety issue (or an out for Mazda). Perhaps it is time for NHTSA to reopen its investigation to protect the consumers against a known safety defect. Mazda certainly doesn't back it's product when it comes to safety issues!.

7 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

Vacuum power brake booster failure, my brakes did not work and my car stalled. There is a warranty extension for this problem - not a recall - I never knew anything about it. A consumer must be notified of a recall but not a warranty extension but this is a very dangerous problem. I fear for the safety of others who may not know about the problem. If you don't know about it you do not ask to have it checked and when it fails you are in danger. I appreciate the warranty extension but I honestly think that I should have been notified. No one was injured and there was no property damage - I believe there should be some reconsideration regarding the decision not to issue a recall on this problem.

8 Brakes Failed problem

The contact also mentioned that the vehicle coasted until it came to a complete stop. The vehicle was examined by a independent mechanic where the customer was informed that the power brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000. Dr.

9 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2017

Airbag safety recall, transmission switch failure, throttle body failure, brake failure.

10 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2017

When braking the brakes are either hard and do not work or brakes are spongy, will slow vehicle, but will not give you confidence that they will stop the vehicle like they should. When braking at times you can hear a hissing, maybe all the time, but when things are happening you aren't listening for a hissing sound. Also, when the vehicle is stationary and in park if you really put you foot to the floor a beeping almost like an alarm sound is made. This brake booster failure should be a major concern. 8-13-2017 I was traveling about 65 mph in lite traffic on a downgrade and slight corner when a vehicle in front of me lost a tire and I needed to brake quickly and my brake pedal wouldn't move, it was hard as a rock, never slowed the vehicle at all. Thank goodness I had plenty of room to maneuver, otherwise who knows what the result of that accident may have been. Another time was 8-30-2017 I was driving my vehicle, approx 20 mph, and was approaching the intersection of our subdivision and the hwy where the traffic travels at 55 mph, I went to brake and the pedal went to the floor. . . . Again no brakes. My vehicle rolled to a complete stop, but not before I crossed into the second lane of cross traffic. Again thank goodness it was around 6:30 am and traffic was fairly lite. Mind you this is only two of the more extreme times. I have purchased a new brake booster and it will be installed this weekend. I did try to contact Mazda, but after sitting on hold, 1-800-222-5500, for over 18 minutes the phone finally rings. . . . . Until it disconnects.

11 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Without warning the brakes became spongy and difficult to depress the pedal. Stopping distance significantly increased and a hissing noise while brakes pedal depressed. Took it in for evaluation and diagnosed with brake booster failure.

12 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2017

Brakes failed. Attempts to stop only slowed vehicle down unless extreme pressure applied. Pedal stopped halfway. Occasionally abs activated due to excessive force required to depress brake pedal. Repair with replaced brake booster. Immediately failed again by making noise on depression though vehicular is stopping. Dealer ordering another booster and will need to return for repair again when it comes in.

13 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2016

At 44,000 miles, brakes feel hard and vehicle brakes slower than it should was nearly in an accident due to this. It took a much longer distance to stop. Emergency repair at local shop indicated brake booster failed. Really dangerous situation. Mazda should recall.

14 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2016

With no warning at all the power brakes stopped working. To stop the car you have to almost stand on the brakes. When you push on the brake pedal you also hear a very faint hissing noise. This is very dangerous as there is no warning of the brake failure. Unless you are a very strong person there is no way to stop the car in an emergency.

15 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2015

My brakes are failing. I first noticed the brakes were spongy and there was a hissing sound in the cabin. Then the brakes became very hard. I was very afraid I was going to hit vehicles in front of me. Also, eventually the car would die when the brakes were applied. The Mazda dealership told me it is the brake power booster. This is very common. Please, please recall these vehicles. I bought this vehicle used and it would have been nice to know about this dangerous problem.

16 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2015

Brake pedal got hard vehicle would not stop no warning lights almost rear ende vehicle brake failure.

17 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

My brake feels like it has air under it and is hard to press down on. It also makes a hissing sound. When stopped at a traffic light, with my foot on the brake, it feels like my car is trying to move. I am scared my brake will fail or not work when I push on it. I noticed this about a week and a half ago. I thought it was nothing at first but it is still doing this and more frequently. I am concerned that this will cause an accident. I am worried something will happen to my children or me if my brakes fail because of this.

18 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

I was driving home from work today. When I approached a traffic light, I depressed the brake pedal and had to press it very hard for the car to stop. Good thing there was nobody in front of me because I would have hit them. As I started to go again and proceed to another light, as I pushed the brake pedal, I heard a 'hissing' sound coming from the pedal. It almost sounded like air coming out of a tire. This was alarming to me because I felt as if my brakes were giving out. I had to press very hard on the brake and as it braked, it was so sudden it shoved me forward in the seat. I took it right over to our service shop in town, and after he took the car for a test drive, he drove it right back and proceeded to tell me that it sounds like the brake booster was going. He advised me not to drive the car and to call aaa and have it towed to the dealer. I managed to get it back home, very slowly, and into the garage. This is very frightening to me because my daughter also drives this car on occasion and what if the brakes failed while she was driving?! in reading all the posts with customers having this same issue with the brakes, I think Mazda needs to recall this part before they have a bigger lawsuit on their hands! I will be calling the dealership first thing tomorrow morning.

19 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2014

Whiles driving and approaching a stop light or traffic light, the brakes depress and the car doesn¿t stop, the brakes have to be pumped but then then the brakes are hard/stiff so much so that you have to push really hard for the car to stop. Once this happens, it recurs all the time. The engine check light came on a day later, not sure if it related, I assume so for now. My car has less than 10,000 miles on it. I notice there is recall notice for this condition by Mazda but this is an extremely dangerous situation, which should be fixed at once. It seems to be a least effort type of recall notice for an extremely dangerous situation. To summarize, whiles driving your brakes fail and the car does not stop. When you pump the brakes, they are stiff / hard and you have to push down really hard for the car to stop.

20 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2014

At approximately 25,300 miles, my 2012 Cx9 touring started stalling at traffic lights. It was sporadic, but appeared to happen when I used more force when braking. Within days I noticed a very distinct hissing sound while braking, much like air was leaking from my tires. At this point, braking became increasingly more difficult, and the distance required to stop my car was much greater. I almost had a collision because I did not realize I needed to begin braking sooner in order to stop my car and I veered into a grassy median to avoid the accident. In order to stop the car I had to apply both feet to my brake pedal and it was nearly on the floor. The service advisor said this was a safety issue and found the "brake booster failing internally", and it was replaced. The stalling was due to "vacuum leak through booster". There was no indication that my brakes had a problem; no dashboard mainteance lights were present. This is a serious safety issue. I just read about a current brake booster failure investigation with 2010 and 2011 model years, but 2012 needs to be included in this investigation as well.
