The vehicle will hesitate/stall while driving down the road. The vehicle has done this multiple times and has actually shut off on 2 different occasions while at a stop. On 2 occasions now the vehicle has not wanted to start. I have taken vehicle to Mazda dealership and they can never duplicate it. When they check for any codes, the vehicle computer does not give accurate times when happened. This last date I took it to them 6/9/25, the computer said it happened 4000 miles ago. The time before, I took it in the morning it happened, 5 min after it happened and the computer said it happened 10 starts ago. The last time, 6/9/25 they said they suspect fuel pump going bad, but until the vehicle gives a "check engine" light or dies all together they are not 100% sure. The vehicle is unsafe if it dies in the middle of the freeway/road with no warning to myself or the other vehicles around me. This has been going on for at least 1 year now, maybe longer dealership has all records. Seeing how the 2018 & 2019 Mazda cx-9 had fuel pump recalls makes me wonder if the 2020 should have been included in this recall. This has been an on going problem. 6/7/25 was most recent incident.

- my 2018 Mazda cx 9 started stalling and jittering at idle and then eventually during slow driving. - next day I got a check engine light, took to Mazda service center at the dealership I have been going to for last 6 years since I bought the car. - service center diagnosed that there was a coolant leak through the cylinder head which seems to have cracked. - further investigation indicated that this has been identified on many other similar Mazda engines and a technical service bulletin had been issued by Mazda to dealers. - on probing initially, dealership declined they were aware of any such problem. - the amount of repair for the engine replacement (cylinder head and other parts) is exuberant and is almost half of the value of my car, and is not expected for a low 44,000 miles car. - this had posed safety issue for my family since the stressed engine with leak in cylinder head could lead to fire and fatality. - I am awaiting response from dealership and Mazda corporation case#[xxx] for a response especially when this issue has been filed under a class action lawsuit: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

We have a 2015 Mazda cx-9 touring with all-wheel drive (awd). The issue that has been happening is a flashing check engine light (cel) indicator showing up in the gauge cluster. This issue originally started in October of 2023. I was on the highway doing at least 55 miles per hour (mph). Before the light actually came on, I had already felt the vehicle shaking, and also noticed the acceleration was sluggish. In the blink of an eye, the cel came on and started flashing. After that point, the cel stayed on. I was able to get to my destination safely. We took the vehicle to a shop, and told the mechanics the issue, but they could not re-create what happened. We stopped driving the vehicle as much after this first encounter. A couple of months later, the issue still persisted, and we took it to another shop. They changed the spark plugs, and the vehicle had been driving cel-free for several months. Recently, we were going to take the vehicle out for a drive, and noticed the vehicle shaking (before the cel officially came on) again. The cel flashed and came on. As of this moment, the cel pops up and stays on when starting the vehicle. I put in a code reader, and the code that came up was “po304 cylinder 4 misfire detected. ” we are figuring out what our next plan(s) is/are with the vehicle. I looked at some forums for the 2007-2015 Mazda cx-9 generation, and I noticed that someone mentioned that there was an issue with the injector pigtail wire (one of the fuel injectors). They also mentioned spark plugs and coil plugs. But they still had an issue and it seemed to be not resolved. I'm wondering if this issue could have a direct or indirect connection with the takata airbag recall that was issued on August 13th, 2024 with a "do not drive" alert.

My Mazda 2017 cx 9 apparently had a coolant leak. When we had our oil changed, we were told it looked like it was leaking from behind the turbo booster. As I was driving it yesterday, the car slowed to an almost complete stop on the interstate and a warning sign on the screen showed that it was overheating to a dangerous level. I immediately pulled over and allowed the car to cool down. I checked the coolant level and it was not very low at all, although I did add some coolant at that time. It continued to overheat and even blew tons of smoke out through the exhaust, so I had aaa tow to my home. After researching this, I have found that there was a bulletin posted in 2021 from Mazda about this very thing happening. My husband thinks that we may have a cracked block or a blown head gasket due to this overheating. This obviously could have caused me to have a wreck on the interstate by my car overheating and shutting down so quickly. We are scheduling to have it towed to our local Mazda dealer to let him do the $99 diagnostic. Based on what he finds, which we think will be confirming what we think it is, we will have to have a new engine put in my car due to a defect in manufacturing from Mazda. Even though my car has 130,000 miles on it and is technically “out of warranty“, we feel this is simply unacceptable and that Mazda should help us with this most definitely. I have so enjoyed my Mazda, and I feel that this is not something of my doing, but rather a defect on Mazda part and it should be addressed.

This is the second time my car Mazda -2017 had problem with fuel pump. I only saw recall for 2019 Mazda cx-9 in internet. Before the fuel pump fail, I smelled gas inside the car which I was told my mechanic later from the shop where I bought my car for immediate diagnose was considered dangerous. The first time happened 2 years ago when we were on the trip 250 miles from where we live. This time we were about 200 miles away. So the fuel pump it seemed became the problem for Mazda. When we asked Mazda about it they said it is not the same with recall for 2019. If those car has the problem with fuel pump and got the recall why Mazda 2017 did not get recalled? they said it is wear and tear but it is the same issue fuel pump. We spend $912 for original part and bought it from Mazda dealer but we couldn’t get reimbursed because they said it is not a recall. I am filing this complaint because they denied the problem with Mazda is actually and consistently fuel pump!. I have kids that I have to bring to school. Smelling gas, the car stop suddenly and lost power will get us into accident. So I am writing this to let you all know that 2017 Mazda has the same problem with 2019 Mazda which is fuel pump. Please take this seriously. Thank you.
Vehicle “surges” at idle. 300-500 rpms at a time. Sometimes the brakes hold and sometimes not. Have nearly been in 3 collisions the last 2 days because of this issue. The ecm codes indicate throttle body or tps issue, both of which have been unfounded. Vehicle has 63,000 miles. Researching this topic online found that many others have had this issue with no associated safety recalls noted. I am hoping to bring light to this so someone doesn’t have to be injured or killed to have this rectified.

Mazda has a known technical service bulletin 01-013/21 which has numerous engine cylinder heads which leaks coolant causing the engine to overheat without warning. On new cars. Mazda knows it’s an issue and has not pushed this information down to its consumers. . Read more...
The water pump failed causing water to mix with the oil and damage the head gasket. Estimates recommend replacing engine. The service engine light came on and we took it to our trusted mechanic right away. Got the estimates from two mechanics for this repair and then towed the car to Mazda dealer who confirmed the problem. We wrote to Mazda's corporate office and was told they would not fix it. My car has 68,000 miles and was regularly serviced. It is currently sitting dead in my garage. We bought this car in 2015 brand new from the Mazda dealer in monroeville, PA. This is outrageous! I spoke with someone else who also owns a Mazda and the same thing happened to his car. From articles I have read and attached, this problem is occurring in many Mazdas. What needs to be in place for Mazda to take responsibility and fix this problem by recalling the affected vehicles?.

While driving in normal, operating conditions, the engine cut off and had to pull off to the side of the road. After checking the obd two error code from the check engine light, there was an error with the fuel pressure rail sensor. Apparently the fuel pump in these vehicles has been failing with regularity on many other models.
Have been making repairs back to back since I bought it had to do four oil changes within that year then tires were completely worn electrical problems kept freezing spark plugs completely burnt discs were really rust car automatically turned off even though the battery is still good and still had gas had that happen twice and did more of a history search in it has had more complaints before every time try to take it to Mazda always be something with their system.

Driving home the car said 26 miles to e. While in gear going down the road it popped engine system malfunction and the whole car shut off and wouldn't start. Didn't drive the vehicle for 2 days- filled the gas tank and it drove fine for 5 days. Day 6- 4/8/2023, fine driving down the highway 45 minutes. Go down about a mile and it still doesn't seem right, I move lanes and the thermostat light starts flashing at 260, as soon as I make the turn it tells me to pull over and turn the car off-it was at 270. Go to drive across the street to get coolant later- car stalls when I shift into drive. Park it- get coolant takes an entire jug. Idling a little rough, but not bad. Mechanic he can't see any issues, computer is throwing out fuel system codes but no, issues that can be found. Does a tune up on it, pick it up. Smoking when I start the car and something smells burning. Driving home, it stalls again while in gar at a red light. Rpm jumping between 500 and 750 while in gear. Park it for a few hours- everything seems fine. Drive 35 minutes- mostly highway. Rpm isn't moving when in park vs neutral. While at last red light before home- engine system malfunction comes on. Driving a few miles down the road still on, temperature at 200. Drive about half a mile down the road- at 260 as I'm pulling into my driveway. Towed to Mazda the next day. Got diagnosis that the head lifted and coolant mixed into oil, flooding engine. Need a new engine and turbo- $10,000 to fix it. Never had issues prior and no signs of anything going wrong. Oil change done 2 weeks prior to this all starting.
Water pump defect that led to pump failure, which led to catastrophic engine failure without any prior warning. The defect is in the internal chain-driven water pump. The pump is meant to circulate coolant through the engine while the engine is running. However, the defect allows coolant to leak from water pump into the oil pan and/or other engine components, mixing it with the engine’s oil and leading to destruction of the engine. Mazda’s internal data indicates that the company began receiving reports of premature water pump failures in vehicles identical to mine (mine is a 2014 Mazda cx-9) by at least June 2007, yet Mazda continued to sell the vehicle without fixing the defect and failed to warn customers of the defect. The owner's manuals say nothing about water pump maintenance because the water pump should last the life of the Mazda vehicle. My water pump failed and destroyed my engine at just a mere 72,400 miles. The water pump problem is caused by the elastomer bellow, which is made with hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, which is damaged by hot coolant. Due to problems with the seal, coolant leaks into other components because the water pump is located above the crankshaft. An engine will allegedly fail once coolant mixes with engine oil and travels through the engine. Mazda allegedly has done nothing to fix the water pumps and won't recall the vehicles to offer free repairs. The automaker is also not reimbursing owners who may pay thousands of dollars for repairs related to failed water pumps. When I took my cx-9 to my Mazda dealer because it was leaking coolant, the dealer informed me I needed a new water pump but then said that because of that they should just replace the engine, for a total cost of approx. $9,000. Dealer gave no explanation of why it concluded before looking inside engine or at timing chain why I must buy a new engine because of bad water pump. Clearly dealer knew defect was the reason but withheld that info. That's fraud.
Traveling on the highway going on a road trip. Had vehicle inspected prior and no fuel system problems were noted. I was going 75mph with my family when there was a coasting feeling in the car. I looked and my check engine light popped on and my car immediately would not accelerate and we quickly lost speed. By the grace of god were we able to pull over safely! code p0132 was the engine code and after an hour, the engine light went back off and we were able to keep a safe speed traveling home. After speaking with a mechanic and dealership, I learned that this was a common problem with the denso fuel system. My vehicle was not included in a recent recall that included a different year of my vehicle. If manufacturers are aware that a major defect is out there, how many people have to have an accident or potentially cause a huge accident because a car made 2 years prior with the same part from the same manufacturer has the same dangerous problem? it’s ridiculous and I hope you look at this near fatal issue that has effected thousands of people, whose vehicles’ were made in 2017, 2016, 2015 and are not included in the recall.
When this vehicle is low on fuel (but not empty) and under heavy acceleration, the fuel pump temporarily fails causing the engine to stall. This creates a serious safety hazard. Other 2019 Mazda models were covered for a similar defect under NHTSA campaign number 21v-875, however this specific VIN is questionably not included under that recall.
Driving eastbound on i470 wheeling wva going uphill toward exit 10 cabela rd the car lost power and could not get off the roadway. The engine failed and the car lost power steering. Could not start the car. The car would turn over, but the engine and battery light were on. The car was sideways in the right lane of traffic unable to be started. State patrol was called to the area and the vehicle was towed to a Mazda dealer. Mazda dealer determined that the pcm (powertrain control module (pcm) has detected a malfunction in the fuel pump control module) - they noted: "found code p064a and in TSB 01-010/17 states that pcm needs to be reprogrammed if no other fuel pump codes are detected, no other fuel pump codes were found. " their explanation was that after driving for a long period of time that the computer no longer allowed fuel to the engine. Their actions to correct - "comments from service department: we reprogrammed the pcm and cleared codes, test drove and rescanned for codes and found none. " this was a known problem by Mazda and they had issued a service bulleting TSB 01-010/17. The bulletin was issued prior to us purchasing the car but the update had not been done on our vehicle, nor had it been done by any Mazda dealer we had taken the car into for service over the past 4 years. This issue that was known by Mazda created a safety issue by shutting off the fuel pump. We were driving at 70 mph on the interstate and could have been hit or worse yet killed. Mazda should have to recall these vehicles and pay for expenses incurred by owners. Mazda will not reimburse us for our expenses. We have contacted them.
I purchased a 2014 Mazda cx-9 back in may of 2020 w/ roughly 60k on the dash. Literally 7 months later w/ about 72k on the dash, the day after christmas I was driving to work (I worked in the next state over) on the highway my car just shut down. No warnings, no check engine lights nothing! it just completely shut off and would not turn on. Thankfully because of the holiday the highway was pretty empty and I was able to swing my car across the interstate so I wouldn’t get hit by oncoming traffic. After getting out and deciding to check my oil I noticed it looked milky. I had no idea what that meant so I had it towed to a Mazda dealership in the state I live in. It was going to cost me almost $8,000 to put in a new engine because the water pump that was placed inside of the engine failed, which in turn caused my engine to seize. The extended warranty I had on my vehicle was worthless so I ended up paying out of pocket. Thankfully Mazda worked with me and had me prove that I kept up maintenance on the truck so the price was chopped in half. This happened right at the beginning of covid when the entire world was suffering financially. I still had to make my car payments on top of shelling out 4k on a truck I hadn’t even had for a year. This is a huge issue with a lot of people that own the same vehicle and is extremely dangerous! I could’ve killed someone or worse myself when my vehicle stalled out on the highway.
There is a systemic evap system issue where there is a leak that either shows that the gas cap is off or the check engine code for large evap leak. Message board traffic shows this as a problem across multiple year models and makes in the Mazda cx line, especially the cx-9. Everyone, including myself, reports the same issue: light comes on, and then replace gas cap. Light comes back on and then it is multiple trips to the dealer for them to find where the evap leak is.

My Mazda cx-9 ran out of gas on a major highway (route 90 in boston) and the gas gauge read half full. No 'out of gas' light went on and range (under information) said 191 miles remaining. My Mazda dealer told me the software needed to be reset (not done yet as of this writing). It is a major issue if the gas gauge is not reading properly and this is a software issue (a bug?). Mazda needs to fix this for all Mazda's and issue a recall so it does not happen again.
While driving the car in the 287 interstate highway in new jersey, I got the check engine light out of the blue and the car started decelerating in the high speed lane. Luckily I was able to manage and get the car to the road side shoulder. I was not able to start the car after this incident. We had to tow the car to the Mazda service center in greenbrook, new jersey. After running the car diagnostics (error code - p0192), they informed me that they had to update the pcm (power control module) software. Thats the only explanation which they gave which made no real sense. They did not provide any information why this issue occurred and what was done to make sure this issue does not occur in the future.
I was driving on a highway getting off an exit, and I had my kids in my car and all of a sudden as I am slowing down to come to a stop to turn off the exit my car steering and brakes locked up and everything shut down. Luckily I live in walking distance to the exit ramp because someone stopped and helped me push my car to my house. They had to put it in neutral but it was extremely hard to move the steering wheel. Never had any issues with leaks or anything like this. The car smelled like antifreeze and was running hot. I let it cool off. It was the water pump that was leaking and went out. It was not able to be driven. I researched this problem with this make and model and there is a lawsuit about this exact issue. There are all kinds of complaints and there definitely should be a recall.

I was waiting in a stationary position, at a red light, behind some other vehicles, with my foot on the brake pedal. All of a sudden, the vehicle started to lurch forward as if someone had stepped hard on the gas pedal! I was struggling to keep the car still by depressing the brake pedal harder, but it wouldn't stop the car. I had to put it in park and turn off the engine to stop the forward thrust of the vehicle.
11/16/18 towed for inoperabilty. Stuck fuel injector/ ruined engine. All panel lights came on. Kept car for 57 days. Fuel injector # 1 failed. We were driving onto interstate. While working on car, exhaust stud broke off into turbo charger housing. Drilled out and rethreaded took back to Mazda dealer to c/o about swooshing noise in r dash said they did not hear. This occurring with acceleration 2/7/19 while driving out of state on interstate , swooshing noise r dash lost acceleration while passing. St peters , mo dealership had to put back on the turbo hose & clamp 5/6/19 back home and again heard the swoosh noise on acceleration. Dealership replaced gasket to turbo charger / air leak with smoke test 9/14/19 again became inoperative while driving out of state immediately after passing large truck, lost acceleration with pedal to carpet. Was told in limp mode smelled something in car compartment. Stuck on narrow county road. Limped to turn off. On inspection by tow truck person, stated was pouring gasoline from front of car. this could have caught fire due to 90+ degree temp in tex. Fuel injector # 4 exploded mechanic on inspection told serv mgr this car was put back together in a shoddy manner. The hose to fuel injector had previously been routed wrong when engine replaced. Now waiting on malfunction of fuel injector 2&3. Scared to drive car. C/o to Mazda customer rep. His response well u have warranty until 4/2024. That is b/c we took extended warranty. Hollingsworth Mazda in baton rouge, la closed reason unknown.
The contact owns a 2012 Mazda cx-9. While driving 20 mph, there was a loud metal to metal noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. In addition, the gears failed to shift correctly and the oil and engine indicators illuminated. The dealer diagnosed that the brakes needed to be changed. The brakes were replaced, but the failure recurred and worsened. The contact also smelled fuel coming from the vehicle and the vehicle had trouble accelerating. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 33,000.

Traveling on interstate engine suddenly starts to stutter. Push down on the gas and there is no power. Car cannot go over 40 mph. Engine light comes on. Take car to my local mechanic. Informed that ignition coils #1,2,4 are ruined. They are replaced, 12 hours later ignition coil #2 fails again. Mechanic gives me Mazda bulletin #01-026/11 calling out issues with pcm and how pcm will cause mis-firing of ignition coils causing the coils to fail prematurely. Coil #2 when replaced was charred and split and was leaking oil. Mazda would not acknowledge problem and would not replace pcm or damaged coil caused by faulty pcm.
I am unsure of the first date of occurrence, but the following have been happening since I purchased this vehicle new with 12 miles on it. And the dealer can't find anything wrong with it. 1. The ac always comes on. Even when it's below zero outside. 2. It fails to go when pushing on the accelerator frequently, and especially in reverse, from a stopped position, until you really push hard on the accelerator causing it jump. 3. Last Friday 2/21/2014 as I was on a ramp moving from one interstate to another, the engine continued to rev up even after I let off the gas, and pushed the brake. This is not the first occurrence of this, it's actually happened at least 10-12 times. It was definitely the most scary, as I thought I was going over the side of the ramp or into the semi in front of me for a minute or so. 4. The brakes squeak loudly when it's cold. 5. The brakes are either really sensitive, or you have to stomp them to get them to work, so since you don't know which it's going to be you're likely to jerk yourself and your passengers around a lot. 6. The vehicle pulls to one side or the other, which would seem to indicate that an alignment is needed, however, it can't pick which side it's going to gravitate towards which leads me to believe it's something in the steering.
The vehicle stalls when idling at a stop light or in a a drive thru. The vehicles motor begins to shake and then eventually dies and stalls out and the vehicle must be started again with the turn of the ignition. The braking system is also defective. When at a stop light and your foot is on the brake pedal. The pedal suddenly sinks as if the brake fluid in the master cylinder has drained fully and the brake pedal sinks all the way to the floor and the vehicle shoots forward even if your foot is on the brake. Another problem is in the power door lock system. There has been a time when the power door lock was stuck and the rear right door could not be shut. I had to drive the car to the dealership with the car door flopping all over the place. They were able to fix it at the dealership but could not figure out how it occurred. They were as puzzled as I was. The car was bought back in 2010 brand new from the Mazda dealership. The reviews were good for the vehicle. Its the first Mazda we purchased and is probably going to be the last.
