1 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2025

My 2007 Mazda5 power steering stopped worked abruptly while turning on a major highway. The sudden change in steering nearly caused an accident. I checked the odb reader for codes but none were present. Then it happened again the next day in a similar situation, the power steering shut off but this time we were able to see the dash light for the power steering failure come on. It kicked back in a minute later. Again no codes in the scanner. Upon researching how to fix this issue my search revealed that 2007-2009 Mazda 5s have a recall for this exact critical failure. My next step was to call the local dealership to schedule a fix, however they told me that our specific vehicle (according to the VIN) was not under that recall, regardless of the vehicle doing precisely what was recalled. Please review the recall if you can, this is likely affecting more vehicles than Mazda is admitting to and is extremely dangerous.

2 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2022

The contact owns a 2007 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 mph and approaching a traffic light, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact drove to his residence however, it was difficult to turn the steering wheel. The contact stated that the abs and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was not able to determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact researched the failure online and found NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2019

Sudden power steering loss while driving on an entry ramp of a highway, accompanied by illumination of multiple lights on the dashboard. Steering loss occurred while vehicle steering wheel was turned and vehicle was in motion and preparing to merge onto highway. Steering wheel suddenly and violently jerked from my hands, causing the vehicle to steer in the direction off the road. Dash lights (including power steering) flashed intermittently, however would remain constantly on when steering was pulled from center position. Power steering loss was spontaneous, intermittent, and without warning. Vehicle did not record any diagnostic fault codes while lights were displayed. Symptoms vehicle displayed coincide with "recall summary" found documented on NHTSA recall 10v374000 for the 2007 Mazda5. Incident occurred briefly at low speeds while parking on 08/23/2019 and resolved after vehicle was turned off and restarted. Incident reoccurred while merging onto highway at high rate of speed as described above on 08/25/2019. While incident occurs and lights illuminated on dashboard, the steering wheel motion is very restricted and the wheel automatically forces itself back to the center (neutral) position. The lights on the dashboard will remain constantly illuminated with any movement of the steering wheel away from the center/neutral position. The radio also has hello displayed, as if the vehicle was just started, even though the vehicle is in motion and was never turned off.

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2019

Intermittent loss of power while driving. Loss of steering capability as well. The loss is sudden and causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle as steering becomes extremely difficult. This is dangerous. I almost ran off the road once and hit a median on another occasion. Its like a time bomb, you never know when you will lose the ability to steer the car. Dash lights all light up as well and sometimes power is restored but the ability to steer the car is not. Car is outside of the recall yet still has the same problem as the recall issue and Mazda claims no responsibility for the issue. Additional vehicles need to be added to the recall list as there are more vehicles affected outside of the VIN's included in the recall. Since. According to Mazda, they comply with NHTSA when issuing recalls, more vehicles need to be included as there is a multitude of Mazda 5 owners experiencing the exact same issue as the recall vehicles.

5 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2016

I called Mazda's 1 800-222-5500 twice about the power steering issue on my car even after providing the info from the NHTSA site: report receipt date: Aug 12, 2010 NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 component(s): steering but they insisted that based on the car's VIN, no recall is effective (???) I'm concerned and can't drive my car after an incident when the steering wheel suddenly stiffened. More so since roads are icy this time of year. If the manufacturer is liable, I would rather have them shoulder the expense for the fix. Would appreciate a fast reaction into this issue.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized as the power steering warning indicator illuminated for three second. The power steering warning indicator turned off and the steering resumed. The vehicle was not take to a dealer or diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 110,000. Sg.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

An issue occurs with the power steering assist, the power steering malfunction warning light will illuminate, and the car will require more physical effort to steer. This happens in very unsafe conditions while driving. I then turn the car off and I am able to steer again for about 2-3 min before this happens again. I called Mazda and they are saying my VIN is not part of the recall #60108 when clearly this is the same problem that the Mazdas were having with 2007/08 models. I've called Mazda and they will not honor this recall.

8 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2012

Power steering leak.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2011

While driving my Mazda 5, while at a stop the car idles regular for about a min then it begins to loose power and boggle down until the engine shuts down completely. The power steering indicator comes on. Fo this not to happen I need to keep my foot on the gas peddle. According to the dealer my VIN number does not qualify for the recall that was issued on the power steering issue. I believe that my 2007 Mazda 5 also has the same problem, stated on the recall for the power steering issue. The dealer refuses to consider my case under the recal.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2010

2007 Mazda5 excessive tire wear and alignment/steering issues @ 27k miles. Have had approx. 10 alignments including a subframe alignment with no success. Have been forced to replace all tires twice due to tire wire on inner edges. Car steers to the right requiring steering wheel to held 2 degrees to the left while operating at all speeds. If steering wheel is released car will drift and then steer itself to the right. The tire wear results in cords showing on inner edge of tires before outer edge have any noticeable wear. Extremely unsafe vehicle due to possible tire failure 48,000 mile earlier than normal repair time.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2010

The contact owned a 2007 Mazda 5. The contact was attempting to change lanes while driving at 77 mph when the steering wheel became unresponsive. The contact was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and the vehicle proceeded off the roadway. The vehicle crashed into several trees before stopping. A child passenger was severely injured and transported to the hospital via ambulance. A police report was available. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a storage lot. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileage was approximately 80,000. Updated 08/19/10 the consumer stated she lost control of the vehicle when she hit a bump in the road. Updated 08/23/10.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

Stopped in traffic at traffic signal. Attempted to change lanes and make turn when the power steering stopped working while wheels were turned in the direction of the turn. I was able to manually turn the steering wheel and make the turn. Dashboard indicator light was on indicating a problem with power steering. Drove to safe area and checked under hood. Fluid level was ok. Belt was turning. Power steering still not working. Turned vehicle off and restarted. Power steering was operational and dash light was off. Went to dealer who queried the system but did not find and 'codes' for the problem. This could have been a problem if my wife or children were driving and did not have the strength to correct the problem and straighten out the wheels at very low speed.

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Mazda 5. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle began to pull to the right and was difficult to control. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the wheel was aligned; the failure continued. The vehicle had been aligned ten time and the subframe was also aligned; the failure continued. The problem was causing wear on the tires every 12,000 miles. The contact called the manufacturer who advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 100. Updated 02/10/11 the dealer informed the consumer that the tire wear was causing the vehicle to drift. The tires were replaced, but the vehcile continued to pull hard to the right. Updated 02/22/11.
