When I initially bought this vehicle it had been through previous owners and I have been trying to fix things but am a single mother of three and I just can afford much but I happen to put the yr make and model into the google one day and notice of recalls and as I read the same as whats I had already noticed had already happened and I figured I could live with it but I woke up one morning got in it and boom driving for ten minutes and boom all of a sudden I have no gears and then I get 1st and nothing else then eventually no reverse , so after almost getting stuck in the cold streets with a baby and my friend, I barely made it home I wanna know why such a nice vehicle is so fuct!!! and why did I get a bunk deal. Like I thought this was my break finally I wont have to worry so much about a vehicle just the other stuff, but to my dismay. . . . . . . . . . . Here we are?????? and if you happen to contact me I can then explain in detail the destruction of this vehicle.

Every time this Mazda Mpv gets a little wet it will not go over 40 mph. I have contacted the dealership with no return phone call or email. The coils allow moisture to get in which will cause the vehicle to think it is overheating and will not go no matter what you do. I was on the highway when this happened in jacksonville during rush hour and being stuck in the middle of no where because of a faulty coil that the dealership does not want to take responsibility for, is beyond frustrating. I have kids that have been in the vehicle other times when this has happened and we had to sit in the van or go to gas stations and wait until it was somewhat derivable again. I have read forum after forum and there seems to be a lot of people having this issue with their Mpv, ranging from 1993-2006 models. Something needs to be done with this before someone gets hurt.

While driving vehicle on highway at 60mph in traffic vehicle shut off. Mazda mechanic told me coil on number one cylinder was bad. This had been replaced just a year or so ago but apparently was bad again.
The electric window control for the 2006 Mazda Mpv failed to lower the drivers side window when engaged. When the other window controls were engaged, the control panel on the drivers side door began to make a whining noise and smoke. We reported it to the Mazda dealer who told us that they have seen this problem quite a bit, but it is not on any recall and would cost almost $1,000 to fix. We took the fuse out that controlled the windows and have not had it fixed yet.

2003 Mazda Mpv. 70,276 miles. 3/8/11 - started running rough. Two rear coils bad; dealer repaired all three rear coils because (according to dealer) once one goes, they all go. ($855. 01) one week later - 3/16/11, rough idle and odor of gasoline. Check engine light goes on. 70,339 miles. Dealer replaced all 3 front coils. ($463. 76) I am told this is a *common problem* with Mpvs. Dealer told me he has seen many of them coming in, and it was a good thing I was having it taken care of promptly. If I did not, the catalytic converter goes bad as a result. . . Cost of replacement of the $1,000. Note: I overheard the service manager on the phone telling a customer the spark plug boot goes bad first, and causes some kind of electrical problem that damages the coils.
2004 Mazda Mpv. Consumer states that while driving speeds of 70 mph the vehicle just lost all acceleration dropping to below 5 mph. She also states that the vehicle just shut off. The mechanics were unable to find a problem.

My 2004 Mazda Mpv suffered the same problem as many other consumers. On two different occasions I had to replace all of the coils and plugs on my vehicle. The first instance was just after the warranty expired and involved one of the rear coils but the said I should replace all three rear coils. The second incident occurred two months later to the front coil and I replaced all of those - total cost $900. I complained to Mazda but they wouldn't do anything for me. This should be recalled and owners compensated.
The idle air control valve on these vans is seriously flawed and is prone to failure which stalls the engine and puts occupants in peril at high rates of speed without power braking or steering. Once stalled, the engine can often fail to restart, leaving the driver unprepared and paralyzed to react. Background - approximately six months after purchasing our van used (2-3 yrs old / 30k miles), we began to experience significant issues with the vehicle stalling randomly after 6 months of owning. Unfortunately, the engine stalling was not a result of not maintaining an idle well on a regular basis. It was random and often followed by the engine running extremely rough, once the driver was able to restart (but then would go away completely undetected). I cannot stress how unpredictable the engine was over the year we experienced this intermittent stalling. Every 1-3 weeks it would stall and sometimes we'd be stranded 1-30 minutes before starting and running normally (no check engine light after engine sat and restarted. Light would come on when problems started and would cycle off once engine ran and computer checked sensors. Why the contact to the NHTSA? real issue I have with here is that the van would randomly fail to idle and stall the motor when at freeway speeds over the year (6/2009 - 6/2010) this went unidentified. As a primary means of transportation in our household for four children (as most vans are), my wife refused to drive the vehicle starting in beginning of 2010 because of her experiences and subsequent fears after many close calls in which she couldn't steer or brake in a safe or reliable manner. The driver must shift to neutral (while at 70+ mph), and attempt to turn the engine over, to gain control again. Take action on this as it is far too common and dangerous to ignore. Mazda must be held accountable for the safe operation of these vehicles.
At 72k, transmission failed while driving at hwy speeds. Transmission went into neutral on its own. Had to replace transmission. Also all 6 coils have been replaced. 1 failed at approx. 38k, 2nd at 50k, the remaining at 72k.

Mazda 2004 Mpv with just under 68,000 miles has 3 fuel injectors(cel) replaced by local mechanic- 2 weeks later jerky misfires with cel required #5 coil replaced by dealership, less than a month later #4 coil replaced by local mechanic in town we were vacationing in-no cel, now same jerky misfires starting again a month after last replacement. Recent forum entries seem to indicate a growing problem of this type for 2004 Mpv. Except for towing charges, expensive repairs, and inconvenience- no injuries.
All of a sudden 200 Mazda Mpv ES on fire on March 1, /2008 around 8:45pm when the car was on the parking lot.

Vehicle was lurching, no warning light was on. It took a while to figure out the rear coil was bad. We spent $1200 getting a tune up and that didn't fix the problem took a while to figure it out. Also, the transmission failed on this vehicle completely at 55 thousand miles. We had taken it in 3 times before it failed and they said nothing was wrong with it.
The 2000 Mazda Mpv lx with 51,300 miles spontaneously caught on fire ,and the front half of the car was incinerated on may 11, 2007. I had driven the car approximately 15 miles back to my house, when I went inside to get a drink of water and came back out there was a burning, viscous substance dripping from underneath the engine. The engine quickly burst into flames, sending billows of smoke toward the front of my house. The fire department came and put out the flames, but not before the car was totaled. The driveway scorched, and garage door damaged. I presumed that the engine was on fire while I was driving on the highway, so I felt very lucky to be alive. Also, if I hadn't parked the car in the garage the flames surely would have set fire to the house.
- the contact owns a 2000 Mazda Mpv. The contact's cigarette lighter didn't work properly, it currently was not working . The passenger door locks did not unlock without the contact manually unlocking them or using the key. There were no warning indicators for the failures. While driving 50 mph the vehicle began making a loud roaring noise, it began to shake and appeared to lose power, but never stalled. The contact restarted the vehicle and the failure recurred. The current and failure mileage were 44000.
We have 2004 Mazda Mpv which we bought new. While it was still under warranty, we had to have coils replaced. We thought it was odd that we would be having to replace coils on such a new vehicle. After investigation, we found that this is a common occurrence with the year Mpv we have. Apparently there is a design flaw which allows moisture to get to the coils, causing them to short out. We mentioned this to fitzgerald Mazda in annapolis, MD where we were having it serviced. They admitted this was a problem but basically thought we should be happy that it was still under warranty. . Even though it was probably going to be an ongoing problem long after the warranty ran out. Since the warranty ran out, we have had to have coils replaced 2 more times at our own expense and are waiting to have yet another coil replaced as I am writing this complaint. Each time we have to have a coiled replaced, it is very costly due to the fact that the design of the vehicle makes them very difficult to get to. Once we had to have it done while we were traveling on vacation in florida. . This was done at the Mazda dealership in gainesville, florida. Then another time we had a coil replaced by a mechanic in owings, maryland. That mechanic did extensive research for us and came to the same conclusion. . This is a problem with moisture getting to the coils and will happen again and again throughout the life of the vehicle. We are now delaying another vacation. . Paying out of pocket to have yet another coil replaced. We want Mazda to stand my their product. There should be a recall and they should be required to correct the problem at their expense. We have spent close to $2,000. 00 now. The worst part is, it is only a matter of time before another coil goes out. Please help!.
The contact owns a 2004 Mazda Mpv. While driving at speeds of 30 mph, the vehicle began hesitating as if it were attempting to stall. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they replaced the electrical coil to the cylinder. The repairs were performed under factory warranty. The failure recurred within a year and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic placed insulating materials around the coil to prevent moisture from entering the coil. The mechanic advised when moisture would enter the electrical coils; it would cause a shortage contributing to the failure. In addition, when the engine was shut off, the cooling fan would continue operating. The failure persisted. There were no recalls for the failure. The failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.
Passenger side door lock actuator broke in 2004 now drivers side door lock actuator broken. As a result the door can be stuck open (while driving) or be unable to be unlocked so people can't get out of the car in case of emergency. . Read more...
I have had four different coils replaced on a 2003 Mazda Mpv van, each costing over $1,000 in total and four different visits and rentals. I seem to notice that this is a common complaint. This has happened from about 2 years until 4 years after purchase.
Engine light stays on after being reset 3 times and after sensor was replaced.
Coil failures on 2003 Mazda Mpv. The failures are widely reported. Causes vehicle stalling and loss of power in traffic. Generates cel (check engine light).
While driving and without warning the vehicle experienced electrical problems.
The contact owns a 2000 Mazda Mpv. Upon purchasing the vehicle, the contact noticed that it was not leveled and was leaning towards the passenger side. The vehicle would also pull towards the right while driving more than 25 mph. Between 60-70 mph, the vehicle would vibrate violently and could be felt when holding the steering wheel. In addition, the passenger side door, cd player, and lighter all failed. The rearview mirror became foggy and needed to be replaced, as well as the lower ball bearings. The liftgate failed and the trunk would fall down on top of her. The manufacturer was notified, but there were no recalls for her VIN that pertained to the failures. The contact found several technical service bulletins regarding these failures; however, the manufacturer would not take any responsibility for repairing the vehicle. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 53,000.
My 2000 mps's driver door window no longer rolls down. A neighbor who also has a Mpv van is having the same problem. Coincidence, probably not for a 5 year old car. Of course it happens after the warranty has expired.
