2003 Mazda Mpv lx with 35,000 miles ignition coil failure after driving through rainstorm in extremely rural area. I was driving alone and had to limp the vehicle 30 miles back to town at 25 mph. Only one place in town could fix it and it was an expensive repair. I have been told this is a common issue with the Mazda Mpv and if so, there should be a recall for the poorly designed coil.

Ignition coils retain moisture and cause cylinders to misfire. This causes vehicles to stall or lose power -- usually when raining. In our case, this has happened repeatedly on the interstate during rain. We early caused an accidents by our inability to get out of traffic with our suddenly-slowed vehicle. Replacement of a single coils cost us over $200. There are six ignition coils (over $1000). Many internet forums indicate that this problem is systemic in this make/model. We understand that the manufacturer redesigned the coil for subsequent models. They obviously recognized the flaw.

2003 Mazdampv started to stall and lose power. Diagnosis revealed failure of ignition coil 1 and 3. I had them replaced.
Significant engine missing on acceleration caused vehicle to hesitate while clearing intersection. Near miss on major accident. Mechanic states that this is a very common problem on the 2003 Mpv due to defective ignition coils. Repair is to replace all 6 coils as it is unknown which is causing the misfire.
We own a 2005 Mazda Mpv. Four years after purchasing, the vehicle started to shake continuously and the check engine light turned on. Also when going uphill it almost can' t make it to the top. After taking it to the mechanic it turns out the engine was misfiring due a bad ignition coil. We replaced the coil. A few weeks later it started doing it again. This time we changed the six ignition coils. A few weeks later it started again with the same problem but not as bad as it was before. We kept using the vehicle like that, for a short period of time. Now the problem was worse, the vehicle started shaking and it started holding back. We took it to the mechanic again. He changed one ignition coil. It worked for a few days. Then it started shaking again. The mechanic change another one, the six spark plugs and one injector. It kept with the same problem. So the mechanic suggested to change the six ignition coils, and we did. The next day the check engine turned on again. I really don't know what is wrong and spend a great amount of money on trying to get the vehicle fixed. I have changed the ignition coils and still the vehicle is not working properly. After research online, we found out we are not the only ones dealing with this problem.

Like many other Mazda Mpv owners, I've experienced problems with the vehicle's ignition coils. In August 2008, the vehicle was riding very rough and hesitating on the highway. The diagnostics for the check engine light showed that one of the ignition coils had misfired. I had the coil replaced and, at the recommendation of the dealership, replaced the spark plugs. At that time, my vehicle with approximately 35,000 miles on it, was out of warranty. I paid $476 for the repair but was ultimately reimbursed by Mazda on a customer goodwill basis. One year later, in August 2009, the vehicle again began riding rough and hesitating. When the check engine light came on, I brought the vehicle to the dealership. Based on the earlier experience, I suspected an ignition coil as the culprit. My suspicions were realized. The dealership found that cylinder #5 had misfired and that several other coils were weak. The dealer indicated that the other coils were likely to go and recommended that all of them be replaced. I had the work done at a cost of $960. The vehicle at this point had only 46,000 miles on it. Both repairing dealerships mentioned that this is a common problem with Mpvs. From my research, I can see that is a significant problem for 2002-2006 Mpv's. Entire message boards are dedicated to this Mazda Mpv ignition coil defect. Most believe that there's a design flaw that prevents the coils from dispersing moisture properly, which over time leads the cylinders to misfire. It seems to me that Mazda should have voluntarily recalled the vehicle due to this issue. Having previously made a customer accommodation on the earlier repair, Mazda has refused to reimburse me for the costs of this latest repair. It's unfortunate that Mazda has chosen to deal with the problem on a customer-by-customer basis, rather than having voluntarily recalled the vehicle in order to address this very common problem.
Bought the 2004 Mazda Mpv ES in 2005. Currently it has about 64,000 km (40k miles). Problem: recently 4 ignition coils malfunctioned . . Had 3 replaced right after warranty had expired. Apparently, this is not an uncommon problem for this 2004 model. Watch out!.
Multiple ignition coil failures. Car only has 54,000. Miles. Started at 31k lots of other driver complain of premature failure. Very expensive to services. Can cause accident if fails in traffic. Manufacture has made change. Need a recall.
2004 Mazda Mpv: I have had to replace all 6 ignition coils in my van - the van would shake and seem to be stalling and the engine light would come on. This started in July 2007 and continued so far through Jan 2010 (when 4 coils and all my spark plugs needed to be replaced at once !). I have also had the car in during oct 2008 because the fan would continue running for several minutes after the van was shut off. My dealer told me this is a "Ford" issue. When will Mazda be required to pay for all these expensive repairs??.
(2) of the back (3) ignition coils failed, causing the minivan to misfire and run poorly. The minivan has 24,000 miles on it. The coils have been redesigned, since there was a design flaw. My minivan is almost (5) years, so it is out of warranty. Many other Mazda Mpvs have had the same problem recently.

I purchased a 2004 Mpv arch 28, 2005. To date, I have had this van in for warranty service to replace ignition coils three times: 10/31/06 ã‚ 31,770mi - #4 coil replaced. Transmission range sensor replaced also 12/05/06 ã‚ 33,229mi - #4 coil replaced again 1/08/07 ã‚ 34,708mi - #6 coil replaced. Today as I was driving, the same symptoms ã‚ steering wheel vibration, bucking, lurching ã‚ occurred as before when the other coils failed. The cel came on, I checked for the code and I discovered that the #5 coil has failed. Now this will be the fourth service for the same problem. There has been no effort on the part of country Mazda to find the source of the coil failure. Replacing the parts obviously is not solving the problem.
Complete and immediate failure of transmission on highway going 65 mph of 2002 Mazda Mpv with 39167 miles followed by failure of failure of ignition coil. Mazda did offer to go in with half of the charge at $1624. 27. Ignition coil was a 396. 03 charge.
The contact owns a 2003 Mazda Mpv. The contact stated that while driving the engine light illuminated and the engine began to stall intermittently. The dealer replaced the pcv valve on 10/5/2004. The failure occurred again in September 2010. The ignition coils were also replaced. The vehicle was repaired again on 9/28/2010; however, the check engine light came on again. The failure mileage was 25,427. The failure mileage was 106478. The water pump was cracked, and the transmission range sensor failed. The consumer stated the engine light illuminated again and the vehicle began to run rough and there was a burning odor coming from the vehicle. It was determined that the ignition coil that was replaced in sept 2010 had gone bad and the ignition coil that was replaced in April of 2008 had also gone bad. Updated evoq 03/25/11 upated 04/15/11.
