Spare Tire Problems of Mazda MPV

Spare tire carrier on 2001 Mazda Mpv van is poor design causing a possible death in the event the safety latch and cable give way. Poor location between the passenger side front and rear wheels.

While driving on rt. 95 from NJ to baltimore at 65 mph, tire located at rear driver side exploded. Vehicle started quakering affecting vehicle's direction and control. The broken tire was replaced by an emergency spare tire. Tire's information: dunlop sp 40 205/65 r15 94s m+s.

The spare tire on my 2000 Mpv broke and left the tire dangling under the van. There is only 40,000 miles on the vehicle. The design is very poor. It is unsafe if the spare tire is not secure under the vehicle. It is unsafe to be unable to quickly access the spare on the roadside. This part should be more reliable. I am most angry at Mazda. The cost is $500 to repair. It only carries the spare tire. I am aware that this is a common problem. Surely and more safe and reliable design is possible.
