3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 03/09/2023

Engine naturally wears out especially after 200k miles due to friction in the natural design of the rotary engine, resulting in losing its overall function such as turning off in the middle of a drive due to loss of compression from worn apex seals of the rotary. The rotary engine requires a replacement of the apex seals to continue functioning normally to avoid any unpredictable accidents due to engine failure. An event occurred where my RX-8 went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway as I was commuting due a misfire from poor compression, this is more then likely a common event nowadays for RX-8 owners starting at the s1 2004 models with newer models soon to follow the same incident as me. This is completely unsafe especially traveling at 65 mph.

Cracked dashboard, torn seats, multiple dents, charged 345 dollars on 6/10 2019. I was sent a tow bill as notification to pick it up.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Takata recall the vehicle was stuttering as I was driving home it wasn't hot or overheating or low on oil, I drove it home and shut it off I then later tried to start it it wouldn't start it just cranked and cranked it wouldn't even start or try to , the apex seals on this car went out which is due to the loss of compression which ultimately caused the sputtering, Mazda is well aware of this issue as it was recalled almost a year ago but I didn't have the issue so I didn't see a need to get it replaced ! this issue is unacceptable as now I'm without a car please help me out !.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

Takata recall, my car suddenly stopped on the side, of the 101 freeway off the west lake village exit going south, and would not turn on. I had my car towed to the Mazda dealership after finding out of the recall on the fuel pump and air bags on the Mazda website. After 3 days at the dealership and being charged 3 hours of $115. 00 hour they were not able to repair my car or replace the recall. They suggested for me to buy a new engine that would cost me $7000. 00.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 09/21/2017

The contact owns a 2004 Mazda RX-8. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer (modern Mazda Dodge ram, 68 waterbury rd, thomaston, CT, 06787, 860-283-4304) to be serviced per NHTSA campaign numbers: 17v355000 (suspension), 16v793000 (fuel system), and 17v354000 (fuel system). The contact was informed that the recall repairs would take one day to complete; however, it took four days. The contact retrieved the vehicle and, while the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate and the check engine indicator illuminated. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that they would repair the failure. One week later, the dealer stated that the contact could retrieve the vehicle, but then diagnosed that the compressor failed and it would only last approximately two more years. The dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. When the contact retrieved the vehicle again, the vehicle failed to start even with a jump. The vehicle was not repaired and was towed to the contact's residence. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures, performed an investigation, and confirmed that the dealer's information was correct. No additional assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Engine loses combustion. Initial onset can happen at any time, including while driving. Mazda replaced engine 4 times using original style engine that loses combustion, and extended warranty to 100,000 miles. At 100,000 miles the 5th engine went out and Mazda would not replace the engine. Note: Mazda replaced these engines with the exact same engine with the exact same loss of compression issues. For about $8,000 they will replace the engine with the gen ii engine that has been redone and does not have the compression issues. This car now has $0 value. I cannot even drive it to have the airbag and other recall work done on it. This has been an ongoing issue, with no solution to fix the problem, just patched it with another faulty engine. Mazda was able to deplete their stock of faulty engines, claim the recall work hours and parts, and still anyone with this faulty engine ends up with a car that doesn't work and is dangerous to drive in traffic because you never know when the engine will go out - you only know that it will.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 03/02/2017

The contact owns a 2006 Mazda RX-8. The contact noticed a fuel odor inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to moffitt Volkswagen inc. (1960 old minden road p. O. Box 5855 bossier city, la 71111), and the contact was informed of a recall that may be related to the fuel odor. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be DE-flooded due to a blockage in the fuel system. The contact declined the repair and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the vehicle DE-flooded. A week later, the engine warning indicator illuminated and the odor intensified. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle had a fuel leakage. The vehicle was towed to the moffitt Volkswagen inc. Dealer and was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 16v793000 (fuel system, gasoline). After the repair, the engine indicator continued to illuminate and the odor persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,700.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 02/23/2017

I believe safety and emissions recall 0516j is causing my car to turn off while in motion, it can be in neutral or in gear. I called Mazda corp and told them the vehicle turns off while in motion and believe it's cause by the recall; they said that they do not have a solution at the moment and did not suggest anything but wait. This is a daily driving car and I can not afford to call out of work because of the safety of this vehicle. I would suggest a courtesy vehicle while this recall is being fixed.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 12/12/2016

I purchased a used 2005 Mazda RX-8 from a dealer. Signed a warranty although there were not a buyers guide or a used car sticker displayed anywhere on the vehicle. The vehicle originally belonged to Mazda bommarito as evidenced by the faded residual imprint of the bommarito lettering that had beem removed likely due to being unwanted inventory. I knew ahead of time that this particular vehicle has a rotary engine that requires standard maintenance and care which I have been performing and documenting along with all recalls. These include- let the engine warm up, regularly topped off all fluids decarbed and cleaned sensors etc internal maintenance care/break in period and replaced spark plugs/ leads with factory genuine oem first hand. After owning it less than a year, with only 50k miles on it, it began to run very poorly. I had the vehicle diagnosed and have documentation and records of work from several independent mechanics, shops and official Mazda dealership(bommarito where it was originally transported from to the neighboring dealer) im paying $8,000 for at it and drove it for less than a year and in spite of regular upkeep it lost compression in its rear rotor. Ii have the extended warranty notice from Mazda that covers rotary engine core replacements. However since its "used" it might not be covered by my states lemon law. There are 1000's of owners dealing with the same issues on behalf of Mazda. I mailed the subsequent ownership notification to the Mazda importer to transfer the records of the previous owners on a lease purchase which I have documentation of although the dealer would not give me any info about the coupes histroy which seems dishonest. . The dealership is not entirely at fault. Mazda is too. Have all this in paperwork. I am awaiting a return notice from Mazda about transfer of warranty from the previous owner(s) documents are below.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 11/15/2016

Vehicle mileage under 100,000. Has hot start issue, low compression. Engine warranty should be met by mileage and not by years. I am requesting recall be responsible for the above issue. Thank you.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Mazda RX-8. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (south motors Mazda, located at 18010 s dixie hwy miami, FL 33157 305-234-5500) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer any further assistance. The failure mileage was 23,000.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

I purchased/financed my vehicle on October 9, 2015 at hilltop Nissan (258 route 10, east hanover, NJ 07936) at 59,201 miles. On April 7, 2016, I went to start the vehicle and the vehicle would not start. I had it towed to Mazda of lodi, so the service department can take a look at the vehicle. The service department contacted me and said it was the engine and the vehicle needs a new engine. The vehicle has only 63,545 miles on it, and since then, I drove only 4,344 miles in the six months. I asked the dealer, finance department for a warranty/extended warranty and the finance manager said, there are no warranties. I did not receive a white (square) piece of paper or booklet for warranty information or "as is" information. Now, I am paying $8500. 00 for a new engine. Then, I searched online for any safety issues or recalls on vinrcl. Safecar. Gov. I found out that this vehicle has a devastating safety recall involving the airbags. (there was also a recall many years ago involving the engine, and that Mazda RX-8 owners can return the vehicle, by choice, for a full refund??) the dealer, hilltop Nissan, did not notify me about this recall. They sold me a used car with a serious safety airbag recall. (also: recalls on a engine) issue: I have a serious defect involving airbags that dispense shrapnel. I wonder what other serious safety issues involving the engine/vehicle that were not disclosed? thank you.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 02/03/2016

My steering wheel is turning to the left on its own and it is difficult to turn to the right. I have researched online and I'm not the only one having the problem. I don't feel safe driving my vehicle and I am disappointed in the quality of parts. Issue 2: after the first recall on my vehicle, my motor is giving me issues again after being replaced 40,000 miles later. It turns off at idle and has problems starting. I fear this might be a safety issue.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Was driving normal conditions down a 35 mph road when I went to upshift gears and depressed the clutch pedal, I heard a loud pop and the pedal went to the floor. The clutch pedal bracket cracked and popped off due to poor quality and bad engineering, in my opinion. This could have caused the transmission to lock up and cause an accident through loss of control. I was not abusing the vehicle/ have not abused the vehicle. . This item should not break in the manner it did.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

The clutch pedal bracket in my 2005 Mazda RX-8 has broken and as a result is very difficult to change gears.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 02/06/2013

I purchased my 2004 automatic Rx8 in September of 2011. It began giving me trouble with the type of gas it took. I finally figured out that bp premium seemed to keep it from "coughing". I thought that I had fixed the issues and it drove fine for a good while. I changed the oil religiously at about 3000 miles or less. It would display the oil light after only about 1500-2000miles. I had a dealership look at it and they said the oil level was fine and they didnt understand why it had the light on. The oil light now comes on at just 300miles into the last oil change. In Feb of this year is when the car started deteriorating at a rapid pace, and I was completely dumbfounded till I began doing some research and saw that many others have had the exact same issues I have had. For one- the ac never works correctly. I have to play with the knob for a bit to make it cool, and still even then it does not work. I am not able to drive it to and from the store now because I am worried it will not start back up. I always make sure the engine is warmed up and sometimes just leave it running instead of taking the chance of turning it off. The engine light also comes on and random times, and I was told that it was because the gas cap was not on tight enough. That is a lie, I always make sure to tighten it, and why would the engine light come on after the oil light everytime if it was human error. The car whines when at a stoplight or sitting for a brief period of time. It sounds as if it is coming from the front left side of the engine if you are sitting in it. No one knows what that noise is either. This faulty car should come with a warning on the front windshield. I am scared to drive it, I am scared to put my family in it, and I am disgusted with the way Mazda decided to treat me when I called them to inquire about certain recalls.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I went to start my Rx8 and it would not start. I called aaa to have it jumped, thinking it was a battery problem. The aaa employee sent to jump the car could not jump it and I had to tow it to my mechanic the next day. My personal mechanic looked at it and said it was a specific problem with the engine that was covered by an "extended warranty" Mazda issued because the 2005 Rx8s had so many complaints about this particular problem. Instead of doing a recall, Mazda does extended warranties. They did the same thing with the clutch pedal bracket, which I had to jump through hoops to get the dealership to take care of it at no cost to me. They always want to charge, even when it is something covered by a warranty. So, my husband had the car towed to the nearby dealership. Automatically, they tell us we have to replace the battery because they need to do a diagnostic test to find out the problem. Battery $185 with labor and $150 for a diagnostic test. Then, we are told that only if they are able to prove that it was a specific problem covered in the warranty that Mazda would cover it under the warranty. If they find it is not that specific part, we will have to pay out of pocket. I was told by my personal mechanic it was that particular issue which is covered by the warranty, but of course, Mazda wants to do their own tests. My car has less than 50,000 miles on it and it is ridiculous that I would have to replace the engine for $4,000 when a quick online search shows that this is a very common problem with this specific car. I think Mazda should have their feet held to the fire and do right by their customer.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

Driving home from the store, backed into my driveway. Got out of the car and saw oil the entire length of the driveway and all under the undercarriage, right driver side suspension, and tire. The oil cooler hose rusted through and dumped oil on the tire. This was the reason I was have extra long stops and pulling to the passengers side during braking.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mazda RX8

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

While depressing the clutch, I noticed the pedal was softer than normal, did not engage, and sat very low, and only a few inches from the floor. At this point, the clutch pedal was no longer operative. I could not engage any of the forward or reverse gears. Upon inspection, the clutch pedal had considerable fore and aft movement, as well as excessive lateral movement. The bracket holding the clutch pedal was not fully secure and appeared to be broken.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

The drivers and passengers side oil cooler line connectors are corroded so badly at 7 years of age that it's literally spewing oil whilst the car is running. I've driven cars that were 15+ years old with no such issues. Not only is this a mechanical concern, but it coats the tires in oil, and leaves traction on them almost nil. Mazda canada has a recall for this exact problem, yet, Mazda USA has done nothing, except for quote people anywhere from 1800-2100 dollars to have these lines replaced. I think it's a complete disgrace to an otherwise very reliable car.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

S10 appropriate handling- letter to the secretary from requesting dot start an investigation similar to Toyota' s regarding the engine flooding of the 2004 Mazda Rx8 the consumer state the dealer had his vehicle for 10 days. After 10 days of unsuccessfully trying to diagnose what the problem was, their final solution was to flush and clean the engine in hoping to cover-up the unresolved mechanical issue. In doing so, they only made the problem worse.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

I have had so many problems with my 2005 Mazda RX-8. Starting with cold air coming from heater. Now the biggest problem is my car needs a new catalytic converter and a new starter according to the Mazda guys. If it's not one thing it's another with this car.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 11/16/2010

Oil cooler metal hoses have corroded due to road salt and driving in snowy areas (massachusetts). There is a recall in canada (special service program 76) for the Mazda Rx8 due to oil cooler lines getting corroded. Weather in the northern states of united states is similar - I don't know why that is also not a problem for us and there is no recall in the USA. The rest of the car seems corrosion free and the car was washed every week in the winter and about once a month in the summer, specifically to get rid of road salt. Dealer charge with parts and labor to replace the oil lines is $2100 !! car has 68,000 miles on it and is a 2005 model. My guess is the oil cooler lines were made of a bad material if they are corroding so easily while nothing else corrodes.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 04/11/2010

Im pretty bummed out, im an owner of an 04 Mazda Rx8 and about a month or so the heart (engine) of the car suddenly gave out, I took it to the dealer to get it checked out and the news they gave me was that I needed a new engine, they asked me for maintenance records which I couldn't provide them with because I do the tune ups myself, they want receipts but lets be honest its hard to keep track of them, so they said no records no receipts it will cost you over 3k to get the job done. I see a lot of complaints and recalls online for this vehicle and know that mine falls in that category also. I have witnesses that see me do my oilchanges and store employees that know I buy tune up products from there store. What can I do to fight for my rights?.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

I don't even know where to begin with the problem I have had with my 2004 Mazda RX-8. I have owned it since September 2003 and it has had countless issues, parts replaced and failures. The incident I experienced last night put me over the edge and almost cost me my life. My RX-8, which was just at the dealer 2 weeks ago, had an engine malfunction while I was on a major highway in massachusetts. The speed of the vehicle went from approx 50mph to 10mph in a matter of a few seconds. Luckily I was able to make my way to the breakdown lane without injuring myself or anyone else; however, this is unacceptable. Every single part in my RX-8 has been replaced except for the engine mounts and engine. I have dished out thousands of dollars already and the vehicle only has 44,000 miles on it. Not only is this a safety hazard to those of us driving the vehicle, but it is also a safety hazard to those around us. Had the car behind me not been paying attention my vehicle could have caused a deadly car crash in the middle of rush hour on a major highway. I have contacted numerous dealerships, the bbb, and am now looking into a class action lawsuit. Mazda needs to be held accountable for their actions. Unfortunately because my car was purchased in 2003, bbb wouldn't have anything to do with the case, however I have 57 pages of detailed repairs that have been made to this vehicle since I owned it, which I am more than happy to send to you. Tons of people online have had similar issues; just from automotive. Com there are 30+ email addresses of individuals who have experienced problems similar to mine. Please help us get to the bottom of this faulty engine and make Mazda own up to their mistakes. People's lives are in danger and this is neither acceptable nor ethical. Ps- an employee of NHTSA has been contacted prior regarding this situation. Her name is cortney and her contact information is 1-888-327-4236 ext #: 1268. I received this from the automotive. Com forum.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2004 Mazda RX8

Failure Date: 09/02/2009

The vehicle is a 2004 Mazda RX-8. The oil lines connecting the engine to the oil cooler ruptured sending oil spewing all over the tires and brakes. The engine lost 100% of it's oil and controlling the car was difficult. This problem is reportedly due to excessive corrosion of the oil lines in cold climates where salt is often on the road. In canada, there is a recall for this issue. There should be one in the us as well.
