Tank Assembly Problems of Mercedes Benz 320

I started noticing that every time I fill my gas tank, there is an extremely strong smell of gas. I purchased a new gas cover but didn't help. Since a year ago it has gotten worst every time. The guy at mercedes said its not important but they would charge ,e 165 dollars to take a look. I didn't pay but I am worried it might create a fire and with 3 small children and carpooling to school its a big headache. Please advise if this is something you are aware about or can help me with. Thank you.

Fuel gauge indicates low fuel level when the tank is full and indicates full tank when there is no fuel. Fuel sending unit replaced 2 times already. The first time on 02/01/00 with only 1064 miles on the car. The second time on 01/29/02 with 19175 miles on the car. A brief search on the internet found many other owners of mercedes-benz cars had similar fuel sending unit problem. However, mercedes-benz continues to say there is no problem with the fuel sending unit in their cars.

Fuel needle reads incorrectly inspite of full tank of gas.

Upon filling fuel tank, consumer noticed that fuel was spilling from underneath vehicle. Consumer cannot fill the fuel tank completely.
