For last three plus years, whenever gas tank is filled over the 3/4 full mark there is a heavy gas odor but I have not seen leaking gas. I only put in less than 9 gallons of gas at a time fearing an explosion in my garage where water heater is located.

Fuel tank leaks gasoline into the back seat area from the fuel tank module if filled more than about 3/4 full. Fuel tank leak also causes p0442 code for leak in evap emissions control system. This is the same problem that resulted in the recall/warranty extension on 2003-09 e class and cls class Mercedes Benz, but mb refuses to accept responsibility for c class vehicles.
My 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 sport continually releases strong gasoline smell after each gas tank fill-up. This occurred consistently for the last four months. I've taken my car to the Mercedes Benz dealership local in my area only for them to say there is no reported recall or the cost to fix this matter is significantly costly. After researching this matter, I discovered there is a reasonable number of owners with a similar model and year that have reported the same serious risk of gasoline smell. Embedded is a link to the online site where these reportings are captured. . Read more...
My 2007 mercedes C230 smells of gas if I fill the tank more than half way. It only has 50,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230. When the contact filled up the fuel tank, there was a strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle. The contact believed this was a serious safety issue since the fuel odor was unusually strong. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The VIN was unknown. The contact had not experienced a failure.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230. The contact stated that when fuel tank was full, there was a fuel odor inside the vehicle. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the canister shut off valve and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 185,000.
I noticed gas smell in the garage, I took to merceds repair shop, the two fuel systems both on the right and left sides where replaced, still smell gas when the gas tank is almost or 3/4 filled took it back to the shop stoll has the same problem.
I believe this is related to NHTSA action number ea13003. There appear to be complaints by others as well for the 2007 C230 regarding this issue. Basically, whenever I fill up my tank, I smell gas outside of the car, not inside. The smell seems to be strongest at the right side passenger mirror door area near the hood of the car. Then after a gallon or two has been used, the smell goes away. It took me a while to reproduce and identify this pattern because I don't refill my tank all that often (I drive about 2k miles a year. ) I first started noticing this smell around June 2014 after I had my spark plugs replaced due to the recommended age limits. At first I thought it was due to that. So I took my car to the dealership and they identified a leak after I described my problem. I have lost all confidence in mercedes due to a number of issues on my low mileage car, that I started researching this in google and discovered other people describing the same problem of fuel odor when the tank is full. This leak also corroborates what I have noticed on the fuel gauge; the fuel gauge drops from full to 3/4 full after driving about about 25 miles or so. That can't be right because 25 miles or so is not even 2 gallons of fuel, and the tank holds about 13 gallons, unless there is a leak. Please see if the problem which affected the e class models from the same time period is affecting the c class model. Thank you.
I recently noticed the smell of gas on this vehicle or of gas coming from my rear seat. I took it to a mechanic shop and he stated that the gas tank had a leak on top somewhere. He stated that this is a pretty common problem in these mercedes. My kids travel vehicle travel with. They end up with really bad headaches. I have read other posts that have the similar problem that I'm having. I think this is a very serious problem people could end up getting hurt. Some could get seriously hurt. I will copy this messsge.

When vehicle is refueled, strong odor of gasoline emits from rear passenger seat and rear exterior of vehicle. Odor lingers until tank is down to about 1/2 full.
The fuel tank will only fill to 3/4 and the vehicle has an odor of gasoline inside and outside the vehicle when attempting to fill the tank. The vehicle was brought to Mercedes Benz for service for this issue and they state they do not know how to fix it and having spent approximately $1. 000 for mercedes to try and diagnose the problem they advised they don't know how to fix. I have noted a recall for fuel leak probe on mercedes 2003-2008 e class models that has now been closed after mercedes has agreed to fix the issue. I contacted mercedes north America and they state the issue on my c class is not related to that recall and there is nothing they can do for me. The mileage on my vehicle is very low and this seems to be the same problem that occurred in my c-class that they refuse to fix.

Began to smell a strong odor of fuel evaporation from vehicle, both while driving and also while parked. Confirmed to be some type of fuel leak at or near the top of the fuel tank. We were advised that this is a known and common problem with this make of vehicle and that the costs associated with the repair will be substantial.
Fuel tank leak. After tank fill up gasoline smells. Big safety issue.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230. The contact stated that gasoline fuel fumes were emitted in and around the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the vehicle had a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the sending unit was cracked and as a result, the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered to cover ten percent of the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 107,000.
When vehicle is refueled, strong odor of gasoline exists from rear passenger seat and rear exterior of vehicle. There¿s no visible fuel leak, strong fuel odor especially when inside the garage. No fuel odor when it¿s less than 3/4 full tank. The car has less than 30k miles when first notice the fuel odor.
Every time I filled up the gas tank I would smell gas in the cabin and outside of the vehicle. It has been like this for two years. My car has very low mileage and it drives fine. I keep forgetting to tell the dealership the issues when I bring it in for maintenance. There is definitely an issues with the gas tank. It is getting worst as time goes by.
I filled up my gas tank and immediately could smell a strong gas odor on the drivers side rear area inside the cabin(the gas filler nozzle is located on the passenger side). I had to take it to the dealer on 2 occasions until it was repaired, my fear is this will be reoccurring.
