I first noticed an issue with the alignment. The vehicle would always pull to the left. After 3 different alignment procedures, it remind the same. I started noticing a clunking sound when I would brake. While driving I hit a moderate pothole and the car lurched side to side, causing me to lose control. It was fortunate that I was on a surface street, and that I was only traveling about 35 mph. I almost struck the vehicle next to me, but my quick reflex prevented it. I limped the car, going 15-20 mph with hazards on, to my mechanic. He called me the next day informing me that I had a complete rear subframe failure. I researched and found that mercedes, had extended the warranty on all models of the same year but my model was not included. Numerous mercedes of the same year and model are having the same issue. This is an extremely and dangerous issue that mercedes need to address. Others my not be so fortunate as I was to have been on a surface road under speed. I would not have been able to control the vehicle had I been traveling at highway speed.

On July 30, 2015 around 1900 hrs. I was leaving home going to pick up my kids from around the corner. I came to a stop light (red). Begin to move forward when a loud bang happened then scraping. I got out the car to address the situation and observed that my vehicle was sagging. I retraced my tracks on foot and located my coil spring. Once I got back home, I jacked up the car and noticed my upper spring housing on my passenger side was broken.

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Mercedes Benz 280. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the upper perch broke from the frame without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Nw.
I was approaching an exit and the vehicle engine was revving with rpm's high however there was little power to move forward. I pulled the car(coasting) to the side of the road turned it off and restarted it unable to think what else to do. On another occasion the same thing happened with the same result this problem has occurred at least 4 times. . This is a safety issue because if I had been on a congested highway with no acceleration and nowhere to pull off the result would have been an accident. The engine shakes upon starting it and the check engine light comes on and off intermittently. Causing me to be unaware of a real problem. I cannot afford to keep taking this car to check out why the check engine light keeps coming off and on to be informed its annoying but to deal with it.

After arriving home and driving over a speed bump in our apartment complex at a slow speed, we heard a popping noise. Then, as we were turning into a parking space, we heard a grinding or dragging noise. While looking under the front right tire to see if something had come loose, the left side of the car dropped suddenly after another loud popping noise. After looking under the car some more I saw the spring was laying on it's side behind the wheel. I jacked the car up and removed the spring which was just lying there loose and saw the upper mount/perch had a lot of rust on it and looked like it had bent upward and gave way, releasing the spring. Luckily happened just outside our apartment door, but had just driven home from a town 30 minutes away on I-75 at 70 mph! glad it didn't give way then!!! I have found tons of other complaints like this online searching "mercedes spring perch rusted". Very common problem, should be recalled in my opinion, or at the very least a minimal charge to the customer to have new mount/perch rewelded on both sides at the same time. Only a matter of time before the right side gives way I guess!.
Both front springs cracked/ broken.
