After filling up the fuel tank to full, I noticed a very strong fuel odor inside and outside of the car. Does not make any difference whether the car is moving or parked. The purge valve filter was replaced but the problem remains. I use this vehicle to transport my newborn son daily. His car seat is on the right rear of the passenger compartment, directly next to the fuel filler area.

Nhtsa action number: pe12001 began smelling fuel coming from rear driver's side area (under rear seat) once fuel tank was fully filled up. The smell would persist until a little above 3/4's of the tank remaining. About two months later, when trying to fill tank up all the way, gas pump would click off before filling up (with about 2 or 3 gallons still empty in the tank). Beginning of March, the check fuel cap warning would come on in the instrument cluster. Fuel cap was replaced and still same error shows.

2005 Mercedes Benz E320. Consumer states fuel filter assembly problem the consumer stated after refueling the vehicle, a strong odor of gas was present. After the fuel filter problem was diagnosed, the mechanic had no idea there was also a gas tank problem. The next month, the strong odor of gas was back again. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the consumer was informed the fumes were coming from the gas tank due to a defect in the gas tank design. A hold was discovered in the gas tank under the passenger compartment.

2004 Mercedes Benz e-320. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle warranty extension for repairs of fuel tank leaks. The consumer stated in late 2009. He experienced a gas smell in the interior of the vehicle the smell became worse and eventually was noticeable outside the vehicle, too/ the vehicle was taken to the dealer to investigate and repair the problem. A leak was found on the left side of the fuel tank. The seal rings for the fuel level senders, fuel pump, filter assembly and harness were replaced in order to correct the fuel leak.
