1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

2005 mercedes E500 wagon has a strong fuel odor inside and outside the vehicle when the fuel tank is completely filled. This odor persists for a few days until the fuel level has gone down. This has persisted for about a year. Due to this safety issue, mb has extended the warranty on this part to repair it. Vehicle was taken to mb of plano for repair. Once the technician confirmed the fuel tank needed to be replaced, the technician followed the procedure which requires them to remove the muffler system to remove the fuel tank. The technician stated that a muffler bracket was rusted and would need to be replaced to complete the repair. The dealership notified me that this bracket is only available as a part of the complete muffler and would cost ~$600 to replace and would not be covered by the warranty. The muffler was operating properly and does not need to be replaced for any other reason. The dealership appealed the warranty and that was denied. I appealed to the mercedes executive referral team and they also denied the claim due to the age and mileage of the vehicle. If I am not willing to spend $600 to replace a perfectly good muffler, then I will have to drive a vehicle with two small children that has a live gasoline leak inside the cabin because Mercedes Benz will not replace the muffler bracket. I have been in contact with ralph at Mercedes Benz executive referral as well as the Mercedes Benz of plano service department.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Upon fueling the vehicle there is a very pungent gasoline vapor smell from both the exterior & interior of the car. The smell begins to dissipate when fuel in the tank reaches 3/4-1/2 tank. The smell of fumes is enough to produce nausea, headaches, itching skin, watering eyes & even vomiting in drivers & passengers. Even with windows down & sunroof open, the smell is intolerable. The car will "sputter" when stopped at traffic lights. The vehicle currently has 105,800 miles on it. This issue was first noticed at approximately 103,000. An appointment has been scheduled with a mb dealership for inspection on 2/6/2016. I do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle due to the physical symptoms we've presented from the fumes & fear of a fire due to the potential of a faulty fuel tank/system. My 5 & 6 year old sons sit in the rear of the vehicle & can't tolerate the fumes. We've had to resort to carrying my sons asthma inhaler with us when riding in this vehicle. The vapors have directly affected his asthma & we feel the fumes are responsible for an asthma attack that has occurred when he's ridden as a passenger. Issue needs to be solved immediately at the expense of mb, extremely hazardous problem & numerous similar reports have been filed.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

When ever we fill up the fuel tank , it starts emitting too much foul smell . I complained to the new jersey mercedes head quarter, they told me to go dealer for diagnose, dealer told me to replace the tank, which costs about $ 4000 ,00 there is defective design of the location of fuel tank, that is located under the back seats, if it emitts fouls smell that means leaking gas , if any passenger happen to be smoker, that can catch fire and cause death and injuries, they have very very defective design and do not admit product liability problem. All these cars should be recalled .

Inside the vehicle the gasoline smell is throughout the car and smells strongest in the driverside rear seat location. Outside the vehicle the strongest smell of gasoline seems to be coming from the driverside rear door/wheel well. The smell seems to last until the gas level goes below 3/4 of a tank of gasoline. 11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

I have been noticing a very strong odor of gasoline coming out of the driver side passenger seat in the back, outside of the car. The order is in the inside of the car as well, but it is most noticeable outside of the vehicle. It generally happens when I fill up the gas tank and then dissipates after the gas tank is around 3/4 to 1/2 full. I am really concerned about this issue not only, because it is affecting my gas milage, but because it is risking not only my life but the lives of my passengers. I am sure that the inhalation of gasoline vapors is not good for anyones health and not to mention the dangers of the vapors in the presence of any kind of flame. I did some research on the issue, and I have found that this is not an isolated event. This has lead me to believe that this is a design flaw of mbusa. My research has also showed me that mbusa has been aware of the issues for quite some time, but is insisting on its costumer pay the repairs that range anywhere from $300 to $1500. I would completely understand, the customers accepting the responsibility for the repairs, if mbusa provided a product that was not already flawed in its inception.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

One week after a visit to palm springs, CA. , where the average daily temperature was about 116, I noticed a smell of gasoline after refueling. The following 3 weeks, the odor worsened when refueled. This a. M. , I pulled the rear seat and cover plate on the left side and found pooled gasoline in the cavity provided for the sending unit atop the fuel tank. As a leak in this area had been addressed by the dealer in 2011, I felt this was an "on going " issue that should be addressed by the mb dealer. As of this writing, I've not found a sympathetic ear at my local mb dealer, yet I must correct the problem as soon as I "burn off" 50% of the gasoline so as to make the repair safer. My home has the gas water heater located in the garage and with liquid fuel present atop the tank, I'm forced to leave my E500 outside! I view this as a safety and, in California, an epa issue and it should be dealt with accordingly by state and federal agencies.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

After refueling a strong smell of fuel vapors is present inside the car for varying periods of time dependent upon temperature and whether the car is in the garage or outside. Based on various message boards most indicate a faulty fuel tank or connections to the fuel tank.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

I bought the car in may of 2011. Upon purchase I noticed a smell of fuel after I would top the tank off. I had a dealer repair it (~$800) and then noticed it again this past winter (Dec 2012). It is the same problem as before, leaking (fumes only) just on top of the tank under the back seat. It is the exact same issue as described in articles I have read about the NHTSA investigation of mercedes-benz e-classes. This is a problem, I believe it should be recalled.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

Gas fumes leaking above gas tank gasket, and going into car from under rear view seats, this is a emissions matter and safety matter, its not healthy for people to breath gas fumes every time they pump gas. Also to the matter, I am a certified smog technician and this is a fail smog inspection due to leaking gas fumes. My car is a ulev vehicle so the warranty is up to 150000 miles, but I'm writing this because it should be fix. Lots of owners are just ignoring it due to cost or repair!! this have been an ongoing problem with this vehicle.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

The fuel tank, pump and sender started leaking. Fuel had pooled on top of sender unit. This made my daughter in the back seat so ill we had to take her to urgent care. I called a dealer. Bought "improved seals for the sender and pump. The problem is not gone. Now the dealer is telling me it could be $1500-$2500 to replace the tank and sender/pump. It is unreal that a potentially lethal fuel leak is widely known about all the 2003-2008 e class mercedes and nothing is being done. Does somebody have to burn to death in a fiery crash before mercedes or the NHTSA gets serious about this issue. The car has had to be parked. I am still making payments on it and have to go buy another car that is not a rolling fuel explosion waiting to happen. I am begging the NHTSA for the safety of hundreds of thousand e class owners to have mercedes recall these cars.
