One problem related to other fuel system hoses lines/piping, and fittings has been reported for the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Fueled the car up on my way home from work and parked the car for the night. In the morning when I opened the door, the fuel smell from the inside of the car just about knocked me out. I immediately opened all of the doors to vent the fumes as I was afraid to start the car until the smell dissipated. I started the car and drove to work thinking that it was an oddity only to discover that when the car sat during the day the same thing occurred when I opened the door to go home from work. After doing research I have discovered many complaints of the same issue, most have stated that there is a defect with the fuel tank filter-sending unit and mercedes refuses to acknowledge a problem even though someone could pass out from the sell of gasoline alone not to mention the threat of fire or explosion from the leaking fuel. I do not understand why this has not been addressed as a recall item as it seams as thou there are numerous complaints of the same issue.
