Mercedes Benz E55 owners have reported 37 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Takata recall ok I bought my wife the 04 E55 amg mercedes about 3 years ago shortly after buying the car we started to notice a faint fuel smell occasionally, so within the past the three years the fuel smell has gotten significantly worse and worse on the inside of the car causing my wife to not want to drive the vehicle in fear of a fuel system related fire with my kids in the vehicle, I do not blame her. So I started driving the car myself within the last few weeks I filled the tank up on 2 separate occasion and it has the first time the gas smell was so bad I had a hard time driving the car myself but this last time, it drained over half of the gasoline into the floor of my garage. Not only making the floor of my garage gasoline covered miss but making the entire car smells like gasoline my garage smell like gasoline. As well as the inside of my house. Once this had happened I looked into trying to fix the problem myself and found that the wiring going to the fuel fuel pump system had burned a hole from the outside of the tank into the gas tank causing the leak. (hot enough wires to burn though the gas tank lid very concerning if I do say so myself. . . And this gas station is only 4 minutes from my house and this was under no hard driving conditions just semi- straight shot from the gas station to the house hopefully they can remedy this problem because it is rather concerning to know that these car will leak gas not only inside the car but outside putting our family and others at risk.

After filling up car at gas station strong gas smell inside and outside car. While car was in driveway I noticed gas leaking from rear driver side. I looked under driver rear seat there was a pool of fuel around the crown of the fuel pumps.
Noticed strong fuel smell in garage after a fill up. I am a mechanic so removed rear seat to inspect fuel pumps, found the passenger side fuel pump leaking quite a bit of fuel through the electrical connector because housing was melting around the electrical pins allowing fuel to pool up on top of the fuel pump. Very dangerous to have these fuel fumes trapped in the garage around so many things that can spark. Also not safe at all to have standing gasoline on contact points of the fuel pump electrical connector. Vehicle needs fuel pump module replaced. Very high risk of fire!!.
Fuel smell inside and outside of vehicle. Inspected fuel pump inspection doors under backseat to find a pool of gasoline.

I smelled a gas order that was progressively getting worse. I decided to pull the passenger seat to follow the smell and noticed a puddle of gas on top of my fuel pump sending unit. I decided to pull out the unit and noticed the unit was discolored around the connector terminals. I believe the terminal melted the sending unit causing the sending unit to leak fuel. I have this is a very common problem with these cars, please help.
Evap code - p0456. Fuel sender leak. Faulty fuel pump/gas tank leak. Strong fuel smell coming from rear of vehicle as well as gasoline pooling under vehicle. Heavily fumed cabin as well.
Strong smell of gas around rear of driver side and also inside of car. I removed the back seat and fuel pump cover to find gas pooling inside the compartment. Gas was also streaming out of a plastic piece connected to a hose.

Smelled strong fuel smell in garage and car. Removed the rear seat to access fuel pump fuel sender units. Upon removal of access door lid I seen a large puddle of fuel on top of the fuel pump sending unit where it was seeping out between a seem on top of the unit. This same part was replaced under a recall in 2008. The same problem with fuel leaks is wide spread and well documented in mbworld. Org I can supply pictures if needed.
After a recent fill up, came back to the car overnight and there is a extremely strong gas smell. The car cannot be driven and was taken to the shop for repair. The gas tank is leaking as well as the fuel pump and sender unit. I was told the sender has shorted and caused issues with the rest of the system.
Noxious gasoline odor emitting into cabin. Lifted up rear seat to find puddle of gasoline gathering on top of fuel tank, leaking from fuel pump unit. Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001.
On hot days there is a strong odor of gas inside the car. Which makes the car unbearable to drive and not sure if it's safe! other owners of the same model of car have reported this and consider it a safety hazard as well. Leaking fuel pumps have been diagnosed and independent shops are aware of the issue in colorado.
The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E55. The contact stated that he smelled gasoline inside the vehicle cabin after refueling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump were fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 52,000.
I filled up a full tank of fuel and drove home to park the car in the garage. Several hours later I noticed a strong smell of fuel inside the car. After looking around I noticed it was coming from the back. Having read posts on mbworld. Org in the past I lifted up the back seat only to find fresh fuel pooling by the pump and sending unit. I called the dealer shortly after who told me I would need a new tank, fuel pump and sending unit totally almost $3000. I dont have the money for this repair and there is no recall yet so if my car blows up then mbusa will be held liable as this is very common problem.
The contact owns a 2003 mercedes E55. The contact stated he noticed a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the contact was advised that the fuel pump was fractured and would have to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 47,000.

The technician diagnosed that the fuel pump and the fuel sender was leaking fuel and need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 49,000.
Reference NHTSA action# pe12001 fuel smell strongest in left rear seat area. Removed seat, opened cover over fuel pump and found fuel sitting exposed. Removed the sitting fuel, and did research. Found many such complaints that match my situation. If I don't fill the fuel tank for an extended time, the fuel smell dissipates, but any time I fill the fuel tank, the noxious fuel smell returns within hours and is obvious as soon as opening the left rear door. Previous owner had similar problem and had fuel pump/sender replaced Apr. 2012 costing $1000.
Fuel pump leaks on the top of the assembly. Smell of gas inside cabin and outside of vehicle removed rear seat and opened fuel pump covers revealed gasoline pooling on top of pumps. Seems to be due to cracks on the top of assembly. Many 2003-2006 mercedes e class have this issue mine have been changed once problem still persists ## VIN passed ## mercedes E55 amg 2004 ##.
The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes Benz E55. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, he could smell gasoline inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the fuel tank seals would need to be replaced. In the process of replacing the seals, the mechanic discovered that the fuel pump was also cracked. The fuel pump was not replaced and after the repair, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 32,000.
I came outside to my car and could not get it to start. The car would crank but would not turn on. Had the car towed to the local mercedes dealership (euro motorcars in germantown, MD). I was told that the fuel pump was leaking and that the fuel shorted the connector that turns the fuel pump on. I googled the problem online to see if it was a common issue, and it seems as if many people have this issue and mercedes already performed a recall on these cars to take care of this problem. I confirmed with the dealer that the recall was done to my vehicle and it was.
The vehicle begins to smell like fuel when parked for about 30 minutes or when driving for long period of time. As if their is a leak in the fuel pump or tank. Sometimes the smell is unbearable.
My car was supposed to have the initial recall completed in 2008. Recently I noticed a strong gas smell coming from my car and has gotten worse. I removed the rear seat and access cover to the fuel pump and noticed a large puddle of gas accumulated/leaking around the fuel pump sender unit area. Also the production date of the parts were 2004, so it is likely the dealer didn't do anything back in 2008. I now have to drive with a constant smell of gas in the interior of my car and can't park it in the garage due to risk of fire hazard.
Reference NHTSA action # pe12001. After refueling car, interior would have an overwhelming smell of gasoline after leaving it parked. Investigation revealed fuel pooled up underneath rear passenger seat and required replacement of fuel pump.
Very strong fuel odor coming into the cabin of the car and making the passengers dizzy. The fuel pump appears to be defective and leacking gas into the car. Potential fire hazard and health hazard when inhaled. Taken to the nearest dealership and was told this was a normal occurance with these cars. It seems to me like this is a major liability that should be looked at as a case for a potential recall.
Fuel pump assembly was leaking raw fuel under car causing explosion hazard that could lead to fatality.
Filled car up with gas and gas started pouring our of rear underneath vehicle and also under seat in rear of car. Very strong smell of gasoline everywhere. Car was a gas bomb! very dangerous! I have 4 children and this could have been a very bad situation. This needs to be addressed by NHTSA. I have since had to replace 2 fuel pumps (passenger side of vehicle) due to same problem, and now I am replacing the driver's side fuel pump as I type this. This is a very dangerous and expensive problem with whom Mercedes Benz should be responsible. This is a wide spread problem. Do a search on google. . Read more...
1st incident was while driving along on the expressway and noticed a slight scent of raw fuel,, as I arrived home and parked in the garage, exiting the vehicle the smell of fuel was more evident, when I look under the vehicle, I see a puddle of gas steadily leaking from the fuel tank area, I cleaned up the mess and immediately had it inspected, inspection determined that primary fuel pump sending unit was leaking causing fuel to accumulate in the fuel tank area directly underneath the left rear passenger seat and overflowing out through the chassis wherever it could find a way out, repair required complete fuel pump with sending unit, as it is a one piece design, after all said and done, repair estimate $1,800. 2nd incident, 8/?/2012 same as described in 1st incident with the exception of fuel leak occurred while refueling at the gas station,, no puddle, but faint smell,, drove home, parked in the garage, smelled fuel more, looking under car, observed growing puddle of fuel. Had vehicle inspected, fuel leaking from around fuel pump housing, determination was fuel pump housing seal replacement, which again required fuel pump assembly removal and re-install for replacement of new seal, out of warranty, past 1year warranty by a few months, $1200 repair, mostly labor, part cost $20. . . . Seemed to correct fuel leak for now. . . . . Fuel smell has not gone away. . . .
Gas is leaking from the gas tank after the vehicle is filled up. If you fill up and let it sit overnight in the garage you wake up to raw fuel leaking out under the car under the rear seat driver side. We have had 6 fuel pumps, sending units and level sensors replaced in the gas tank the last 3 years. Then the gas tank itself was changed along with new sensors and pumps. It started leaking a year later. Same situation if you fill the car up it starts to leak. When will this situation be fixed. Mbusa has failed to offer any assistance to owners that have paid upwards of 90,000 dollars for these vehicles. Why? so that mbusa can show the NHTSA people "look we have no warranty claims on file" just read the complaints of 2003-2006 E55 owners. Now the newer e63 gas tanks are starting to leak as the vehicles reach 4 years of age. Just like our E55 started to leak at 4yrs and 50k miles. How much red tape does NHTSA have to go thru? you have hundreds of leaking E55s all over the country and you do nothing?.
The contact owns a 2005 mercedes-benz E55. The contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the fuel pump, sending unit, and fuel lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was unavailable.
Vehicle lost power on interstate. Later re-started and taken to tafel motors in louisville, ky. Both fuel pumps/ sender modules were found to be defective and leaking and replaced at a cost of $1627. 47 on 8-3-10 at 112646 miles. In August of 2011, both pumps and modules began to leak fuel. Strong odor of fuel in cabin, and fuel leaking onto ground. They were replaced at Mercedes Benz of indianapolis under warranty of the service done at tafel motors the year before. Again, on October 5 of 2012, one of the units began to leak gasoline, strong odor of fuel in cabin, and leaking onto ground. It was replaced at my expense of $921. 48. I took pictures of the fuel puddling on top of the gas tank. I also retained the removed part, in case NHTSA would like to inspect it. This part (211-470-51-94 was originally replaced under mercedes recal on 3/20/2008 at 62975 miles. It has now been replaced 3 more times.
Every time I fill the tank, I get a strong fuel smell. Recall was performed insert in fuel fitting, not the problem. Service center found "cover plates leaking on both sides, replaced fuel pumps, installed updated contact plate and seal. Checked for leaks and none found. " filled tank and strong fuel smell returned immediately. Found out by experience never to park the vehicle in the garage with a full tank or the house will be filled with fuel smell. Poor design fuel system in the e class mercedes, someday one will cause an explosion, do not park in attached/basement garage!.
First incident involved a strong fuel odor coming from interior of car. Took car in to mb dealership and was told that there was a leak that allowed gas to spill out into the car under the rear seats. Also, the fuel pump and sending unit needed to be replaced. That was done at a $1400 cost out of pocket. Within a year, the same problem occurred and needed to be replaced again. The dealership handled the cost on this as the part was under 1 year warranty. Now, within the same year, the same issue has come about. I searched this problem and it seems that their are hundreds of thousands of consumers complaining of the same issue. Mb is needs to fix this issue and take care of the cost. I am not going to pay for the same repair 3 times in a 3 year span. Not to mention the health, enviromental hazard, and potential safety hazard this can cause.
Very strong smell of gasoline inside and outside the vehicle. Regarding the interior, it was determined that there was a leaking seal at the fuel sender unit. The seal at the fuel sender unit was replaced in March 2010. This problem reoccurred in late 2013. In March 2014 the fuel pump assembly, fuel pump lock ring and fuel sender seal were all replaced with new parts. The problem has re-appeared again. Regarding the exterior smell it was determined that there is a fuel leak at the fuel tank vent area. This was initially manageable by keeping the fuel level below 3/4 full. In the last couple months this problem exists at any fuel level. This overwhelming fuel smell will completely envelop the entire garage within 15 -20 minutes and possesses an extreme health risk and potential for an accident to happen. The level of exterior odor now is so high that it penetrates into the interior of the vehicle, whether the vehicle is standing still, in motion and with the engine on or off. From the research I have done this exact same problem is common to this model Mercedes Benz and has been documented for a number of years. I have not received any notification or communication from Mercedes Benz at any time regarding this issue. This is unacceptable!.
After the 2008 recall on mercedes fuel pump replacement did not resolve the problem, I have replaced them 2 times. As of Feb 2014 they are leaking again, my main concern is that the fumes after repairing the car still come back, cause my wife to be sick and after having cancer she has not able to use the car unless we air it out 2-3 days before. After each replacing the pumps look burned, and mercedes has not given us reason why this problem exist or solution to the problem.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz E55. The contact stated that he noticed a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the contact was advised that the fuel pump was fractured and needed to be replaced along with the right rear sending unit. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,147 and the current mileage was unknown.
