Mercedes Benz E55 owners have reported 4 problems related to other fuel system tank mounting (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Fuel tank/sending units are leaking badly on top of tank and seeping raw fuel and heavy fumes into passenger compartment. This is a horrible safety risk and I am aware that this is becoming a very common issue with this model. I am afraid to drive my vehicle with such a large amount of fuel soaking into the passenger compartment. I also have photos of the affected area if useful.

Filled my car up the night of 10/1/13. Parked the car inside garage connected to my house. Upon waking up the morning of 10/2/2013, I was overwhelmed with very strong fuel odor. I traced the source of the odor to my 2005 Mercedes Benz E55 amg parked in my garage. I immediately opened the garage door to evacuate the fuel odor. I was able to locate the source of the fuel smell to the drivers side back seat. Armed with a fire extinguisher, I started the car and backed out of my driveway and notice a fluid puddle and liquid line formed. I got out to find gas pouring out from under the driver side rear passenger compartment. I continued to backed the car away from the house incase of fire. The vehicle was taken to the local dealership. There, the dealer pulled the rear seat and the fuel pump inspection cover to confirm the source of the fuel smell. What we found was raw fuel sitting on the top of the fuel take that had apparently leaked from the drivers side fuel pump. The dealer informed me that they had seen this problem on other E55's and that as of now, there was no recall issued so I would have to pay out of pocket to repair the vehicle. This repair has cost me in excess of $1000. 00. There appears to be a significant safety issue with the design of this vehicle. Allowing raw fuel to escape from the fuel take and "puddle" both on top of the fuel tank and under the vehicle creates an immediate fire hazard. To make matters worse, there is an electrical connection for the fuel pumps immediately next to the raw fuel puddle. I was very fortunate not to have an ignition source in my garage. I shudder to think of the results had anything ignited the enclosed fuel vapors (inside my garage while my family slept above). Please investigate this issue and force a safety recall before someone looses a vehicle, home, or worse yet . . . A life!.

Please reference existing NHTSA complaint #pe12001. My 2006 mercedes E55 has raw fuel puddling under the rear seat area behind the driver's seat. There appears to be a leak from the housing or tank itself in this area. The fuel leak is substantial and the vapors from this leak are overwhelming inside the car. I have taken numerous detailed photographs of this leak. I also have a video clip that appears to capture a hissing sound of pressurization inside the tank forcing fuel vapor into the interior of the car. I would be happy to share any of this information with you to help with your investigation. My understanding is that you have already received several dozen complaints about this exact problem from other mercedes E55 owners, and perhaps from other mercedes models that use the same gas tank / sender units. Due to the amount of fuel that is puddling up in the back of my car, I am afraid to drive it and the raw fuel smell is giving me a headache even when I keep the windows rolled all the way down. I would appreciate your help in applying pressure on mbusa to provide a valid and complete fix for this issue.

Strong fuel odor inside and outside of cabin. Outside smell is strong at rear passenger side of car. Cannot leave car inside of my garage because of the strong fuel odor. (especially if fuel is over 1/4 tank) no visible leaking of fuel on floor. After speaking with other mercedes E55 owners, many appear to have the same issue. I have a small amount of fuel sitting on top of sender units under the rear passenger seat. I have a newborn baby that I cannot transport in this car due to the fumes. I purchased the mercedes for safety and I don't think raw fuel located directly under my baby is safe. I also see a pending investigation already open regarding this matter. Please direct mercedes to do the proper thing and perform a recall to address this serious safety concern. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S.
