Car smells like gas inside and out until about half a tank after reviewing Mercedes Benz forms in the benz world website it is a very common problem with the e500 and E550 in the years between 2005 and 2008 vehicles there are numerous complaints about it and not sure when it started I've just recently purchased the vehicle but the previous owner previous owner mentioned it to me as well I didn't thank to much about it till the smell has gotten so bad that the windows have to be rolled down to be able to breathe in the vehicle.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Mercedes Benz E550. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the fuel gauge had displayed inaccurate fuel levels and a strong odor of fuel was present coming from the exhaust. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer Mercedes Benz of austin(6757 airport blvd, austin TX. ) who diagnosed that the fuel leveling sensor was faulty and fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000. Jft.

The contact owns a 2007 mercedes-benz E550. While fueling the tank at the service station, fuel spilled onto the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the fuel container was replaced. In addition, he fuel gauge failed when the dealer replaced the container. The fuel gauge was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Related to case# ea13003 I recently purchased a pre-owned 2008 E550 with 59k miles in December 2014. After fill-up, I noticed a faint fuel smell on the drivers rear area near the rear wheel. I have also opened up the access hatch and noticed fuel seeping from the sending unit. This seems to be the exact issues I have seen in regards to case #ea13003. This smell goes away after the tank level goes below 3/4.

Summer of 2013, I carried the car to the dealer because there was loud smell of gas, they checked it out but said they couldn't find anything. On 2 November 2014 my wife fill the tank with gas and advised me that there was loud smell of gas. I checked it out, took the back seat up so I could see the gas tank and there was gas on top of the fuel sending unit. I went to the dealer and ask if there was a recall, they said no but they would check it out and repair it for a fee.

Strong smell of gas inside the car when fueled. Was told today that there is a bolt threaded into the top of the gas tank, and gas is leaking from it. Cost of repair is $2200. Car has never been rear ended. Can't get an answer from dealer as to how this happened.

Previously reported on complaint # 10638080, no response. Please provide update about NHTSA action # ea13003. Leaking fuel tanks. We have been overcharged for replacing defective tank, mercedes will not help with $3293. 15 fee charged on this manufacturing error. Please advise, thank you.

Every time car is filled with gas, there is an overpowering gas smell in the car and the garage. Took vehicle to local Mercedes Benz dealership. Dealership found fuel tank leaking from top of fuel tank above sender. Charged my father $3,293. 15 for repair. This is obviously a manufacturers defect.

The 2007 mercedes E550 emits a very strong gas odor. It smells like gas vapor and not burnt motor oils. The smell appeared shortly after I refueled the gas tank. I drove the car to a shopping center, and I could smell the gas both inside and outside. After leaving the car in the garage, the garage now also smells like gas.

Purchased vehicle Nov 2012, filled car up for the first time 3/20/13 for out of town trip. Noticed very strong gas odor in back seat. Did not re-fill while out of town due to possible leaking fuel sending unit and/or gas tank.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 28,000.

I have had two earlier attempts in 2011 to fix a strong gasoline smell from my Mercedes Benz E550 2007 did not fully resolve the problem. Finally, in October of 2012 (approx. 10/10/12) Mercedes Benz did replace under warranty the entire gasoline tank and related lines and connection. This did resolve the problem of gasoline smell in my garage after gasoline tank fill-up. No gas leaks ever noticed or fire ever occur. When I fill the gas tank up to the top with fuel, there is a strong oder of gas coming from the car. It doesn't go away until the tank is about 3/4 full after driving. I took it to the dealer, they said they fixed it, but they did not. I think mercedes is aware of this issue yet refuses to do a recall. There are 100's of other complaints about this problem online from other e-class owners.

The contact owns a 2007 Mercedes Benz E550. While parked, the contact noticed a strong gasoline fuel smell after refueling the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the fuel tank seals would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the contact noticed a fuel leak after the repairs were completed. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

When the fuel tank is filled there is a strong smell of fuel under the drivers side rear wheel base and in the passenger compartment with on occasion a small leakage of fuel on the floor. I have searched the internet and found similar problems on several w211 cars. I contacted the dealership on several occasions to repair the problem and they are no help except to say it will cost around $2000 to repair the problem. I did find that there was some correspondence between the NHTSA this year in April concerning this matter but did not know the outcome and mercedes is not willing to help at this time. Thank you.
