Mercedes Benz E Class owners have reported 4 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Wiring problem of the 1996 Mercedes Benz E Class

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

Performing maintenance on the car, I noticed that the main engine electrical harness was almost completely deteriorated. The insulation on individual wires had rotted off, leaving exposed wiring. I noticed arching when power was applied. This is very dangerous and could result in a fire.

2 Wiring problem of the 1996 Mercedes Benz E Class

Failure Date: 08/14/2010

I was driving on the freeway & lost power, the engine would not accelerate. I almost got killed, I finally pulled on the shoulder& eased to service road & I noticed the engine was running at idle speed, the a/c was running all the electrical system was functioning. Check engine light was on. I tried to rev engine up by moving the cable lever manually; the engine would not go above idle, had the car towed to ewing Mercedes Benz they had to order the whole engine harness. It will cost me $1100 or more to have it replaced. This wiring harness is in poor shape on these car the insulation become brittle and falls apart.

3 Wiring problem of the 1997 Mercedes Benz E Class

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

My mb e300d's engine will cut off for no apparent reason. It started gradually just cutting off while sitting at an intersection or while slowing to a stop. Feeling it was anything from fuel to computer problems I took it to the shop on several occasions. They advised they could not find the problem and wanted to start replacing parts like relays. The problem came to a head while my wife was accelerating on an interstate ramp into traffic running 70mph. The car cut off causing near catastrophic accidents. This is of course unacceptable. Mercedes is acting like this is not a big problem. Upon searching the web, I found that this is a common problem -"cutting off for no apparent reason" and so far this agency seems to have not done much to force mercedes to correct this extremely hazardous condition. I can not keep driving the car until something breaks bad enough for mercedes to find it. The wiring harness is the known culprit though mercedes won't admit it.

4 Wiring problem of the 1995 Mercedes Benz E Class

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

Wiring harness has same problem as noted by other owners-started with wiring to mas melting. I rewired that-drove car another year with small electrical problems blowing fuses without finding cause-drove car to work one day,ran fine, came out to go home and it had a miss. Removed cover over injectors and foung all the wiring was bare. This is a common problem with mbs and they should have a recall.
