6 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 07/10/2004

(1)vehicle was making a left hand turn and became almost impossible to turn steering wheel. (2) crankshaft dampener became separated at point of rubber vulcanized and caused serpentine belt to come loose leaving power steering to stop working along with all other pulleys run by the same belt. (3) dampener and belt were replaced. (old parts are available) this is an extremely dangerous situation that my local dealership says is happening very frequently. New types of replacement dampeners have been changed six (6) times in the last five (5) years in the parts book. Several local mechanics say it's a very common problem and they wonder why a recall has not been ordered. It would be very easy to find out how many crankshaft dampeners have been ordered and replaced by both dealers and parts sales. Again, let me say this is a very dangerous situation that is very common. My primary worry is that a small person would not be able to turn the steering wheel if the power steering goes out as in these broken dampener cases. I'm a 225 lb man and I could barely bring the car to a safe stop at only 25 miles per hour. What would have happened on a mountain road? please investigate this problem for everyone's safety. Thank you!!.

7 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

8 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 11/28/2003

The power steering on the Ml320 does not always respond to abrupt changes of direction in low speed maneuvers. On numerous occasions, I have steered to the left or right at low speed (<10mph) and then quickly tried to steer in the opposite direction. The power steering requires a great deal of force to change the initial steer direction and it is extremely difficult to change direction. This could easily result in an accident. I don't believe this behaviour is unique to my particular vehicle but is instead a common trait of all mls.

9 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

10 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 09/09/2003

The harmonic balancer on my 1999 mercedes Ml320 engine type m112 failed and resulted in $4,000 to repair. The part failed with no advanced warning. Even the mercedes dealership who performed the power steering recall two weeks prior to the failure did not spot any problem and they knew to be looking. I was lucky the failure occurred in my driveway backing out of the garage in stead of on the freeway with an immediate loss of power steering or destruction of the engine.

12 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 04/23/2003

My power steering went out after making a slow, 180 degree turn when exiting a car wash--I was turning into the street when I noticed it. I was told the vehicle had been recalled to replace the power steering part. I never received a recall notice (that I can remember) and I have had the car in for service and this was not pointed out. The situation could have cause an accident if there had been traffic coming in either lane. I had three kids in the car with me.

14 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 03/03/2003

This is the second time that the power steering fluid has leaked causing sudden loss of steering control. First time (Feb 2002) the dealer termed it as fault of "clamp" and now the second time (March 2003) the dealer is terming it as problem with "power fluid hose" first time the incident could have been fatal as happened while car in motion at 60 miles / hour on freeway. Luckily being Sunday morning there was low traffic and managed to pull it to side. Second time could have caused significant property damages as car was being pulled out of garage and could have hit the car parked next. In both cases there were no prior indication for failure.

18 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 06/01/2002

Mercedes benz, Ml320,1999, harmonic balancer failure. Destroys the whole bottom front of the engine including making power steering inoperative. May cause a real bad accident. I also have a 2000 c280 with 47,500 miles which looks like carries the exact same problem with the same possible accident potential.

19 Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System problem of the 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320

Failure Date: 10/25/2001

I heard a snap sound while driving and a burning rubber smell afterwards. We were going to pull into a parking lot to investigate, but half way to making a left turn, we lost all steering capabilities and coasted to the side of a intersection. I normally drive on the freeway, and if this happened then, I am sure I would have had a major accident.
