Lower power steering hose clamp had released and allowed the power steering fluid to discharge to the ground. This loss of fluid disabled the power steering rendering the car almost impossible to control without strong steering input. My wife had to call for me to drive the car home. The hose failed upon startup, thus preventing an accident. The unit was repaired at no cost under bulletin #t-b. 46. 30/13a. This bulletin extended the warranty to 100,000 miles for this part. However, this type of failure mode could result in loss of control and a crash.

in September 1999, we purchased a new mercedes-benz, ml-320. In 2003, the vehicle was part of a recall concerning a lower power steering hose and clamp at the radiator fitting. On August 7, 2007, while driving the vehicle, the lower power steering hose blew off losing all hydraulic fluid. We lost the power steering and had extreme difficulty steering the vehicle. The same problem has occurred with a family member's ml-320. In addition, the transmission has frozen four times in first gear. The mercedes dealer was unable to locate the problem. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and they replaced the hose; however, we have not retrieved the vehicle from the dealer because we are fearful about driving the vehicle due to these recurring problems.

I took an 8 miles round trip to homedepot in the morning and parked the vehicle in the garage. @ hours later, I needto make another trip and as I was backing out the vehicle, I noticed a small puddle of shiny stuff on the garage floor. Since I have read about steering hose clamp failure before, I immediately park the vehicle and jack it up to have close inspection. To no surprise, the upper clamp was loose. So I tighten up the clamp and took a short 2 miles test drive. Re-inspected the clamp, found no leaks. If I haven't read about the clamp failure before and let the leak continue, I don't want to think about the consequences. Thus the complain.

3 power steering hose clamps loose on 2000 mercedes Ml320 with ~45,000 miles. One on lower radiator required 3 full turns to tighten. Had this hose come off power steering fluid would have leaked out and control of the vehicle would have been very difficult to control.
When the consumer made a turn in a driveway the pressure hose for power steering failed and made it difficult to steer the vehicle. Mr scc.
My wife was driving the Ml320 and the power steering failed and made the vehicle very difficult to control. Roadside assist indicated that this is a very common problem with the Ml320 but there has not been a recall. This is a very significant safety problem for this vehicle. Mercedes should recall this vehicle and develop a permenant fix ASAP.
While driving 25 mph, the check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. The driver took the vehicle to a body shop for inspection. The driver noticed fluid leaking from underneath the vehicle. The mechanic inspected the vehicle and determined that the power steering hose needed to be replaced and replaced it. However, the problem still occurs at this time. Please provide further details.
The defect stated in recall 03 v 121 000 for the power steering hose clamp happened while the consumer was waiting to be notified. The consumer experienced the following: the entire instrument cluster lit up and flashed and beeped, lost the speedometer, tachometer, gas/gas temperature gauge, and the vehicle had gone into second gear and did come out for some time(discovered it was in limp-home mode). The service dealer advised the consumer that the problem was the gear selector. The instrument cluster lights had gone off, except for the bas/brake assist system light, the gauges, speedometer, and tachometer had resumed. There was an incident where half of instrument cluster display on the left lit up, although the vehicle continued to run. The service dealer thought the problem may have been the battery. During a rainstorm, the entire instrument panel lit up, the tachometer, speedometer, and the gas gauge stopped and the instrument panel kept beeping intermittently but did not go into limp mode. There was a crack in one of the d-pillars, and the rear hatch lock did not work. The ignition lock seemed loose since the gear shift assembly had been replaced, the windshield washer reservoir leaked. The bas/esp control module had been changed, but the problem persisted. The consumer was told the vehicle needed a new battery. The brake pad wear light displayed, the power steering had failed again. The consumer was advised the vehicle needed front and rear brakes then was told that it was a clamp problem. Also the driver's window switch hesitated. The safety recall notice that related to the failure of the hose clamp for the power steering fluid which apparently caused the complete loss of power steering in the vehicle as well as damage to the hydraulic fluid pump which resulted in repairs performed on the vehicle. The consumer requested full reimbursement for the charges related to the repairs. Recall# 03v121000.
